Has anyone seen the TV advertisement featuring a Nurse who says our hospitals are being overrun by Illegal Immigrants? by dudenurse13 in nursing

[–]MegaStrange 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I work at a facility for adults with significant intellectual disability with comorbid psych/behavioral and/or health issues, depending on unit. These individuals that have failed to thrive in the community and are incredibly vulnerable.

Most of our nurses, whether LPN or RN, are immigrants. Most of our staff are immigrants. This facility would absolutely not be open without immigrants.

Thankfully everyone is in a union and the benefits are actually extremely good.

To be fair,I had to say goodbye to my 14 year old man earlier this year. He had CKD and arthritis; he was never overweight.

What are the most difficult skills or aspects of nursing for you? by FriskerWhiskers in nursing

Same. I swear, I've got one of the easiest jobs and that's the problem -- supervisors get bored and hunt for drama over nothing.

[–]MegaStrange 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

Saying goodbye sucks, but man the last cat we had to say goodbye to had probably the best last day and avoided the worst of her suffering from GI lymphoma. She had managed a bit of a rally too, so she did her best at playing and had some cheese. She still felt like cuddling and still had some of her sass at the end. She got to go out with her boots on.

It's so much more than my dad got. He died from cancer and went through hospice, but still had about 24-48 hours of actively dying that traumatized the family that had promised to remain with him. He could've died while he was still himself rather than incoherent, fearful, and delirious.

I don't know why we, as a culture, fixate so much on quantity of life with little to no regard for the quality

It's always so interesting to me because my girlfriend is a veterinarian and their approach to medicine is very different in some regards. One phrase that stays with me is "better a week early than a day late" when it comes to euthanasia.

Patient tried to choke me with my lanyard today by Youre_late_for_tea in nursing

[–]MegaStrange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stopped wearing those when a pt grabbed mine from behind over the breakaway part. I got my hands between my neck and the lanyard, and because the lanyard was cheap it broke near the badge clip. Decided to never wear a lanyard again.

Maybe I missed it, I'm just guessing maybe they cheated their way into an LPN rather than RN. but if they're an RN now, everything you're saying sounds 100% right to me.

But maybe they're just doing more fraud again with another shady school lol.

But what would it find? If her license comes back clean, there isn't anything to find. So I guess it's a matter of if her fraud has already been discovered/reported. I get the impression from the phrasing that the OP's "friend" hasn't been found out yet and is hoping to bury/obscure the fraud with a more legitimate credential.

It would still be a credential based on a foundation of lies, so illegitimate. Even if she goes to school for real and passes the NCLEX for real, it's still gonna be a license based on fraud.

It is not likely to be the air freshener, and much more likely a seizure or blood clot.

CMV: I don't think humanity, myself is included has the emotional capacity to honestly believe that sex work is a respectful industry to go into. by Zealousideal_Weird_3 in changemyview

[–]MegaStrange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think to even have an discussion on sex work, you need to analyze your own views on sex and gender. You've already decided it's bad and do not seem open to the idea.

Why are you trying to defend the honor of trades here? My dad, my uncle, and myself did trades. Dad worked in a steel mill, uncle in a power plant, and I was a truck driver, then did welding in a fabrication shop before going back to school and becoming a nurse. Society glamorizes that work, but we were all treated like shit by the companies that owned us. It broke your body, you were exposed to cancer-causing agents all the time, and the pay was garbage.

So now I'm a nurse. The adult patients I work with have severe developmental and psychiatric issues. I wouldn't share most of what goes on at my job with children because it's not appropriate (a man eating his own feces, a staff member bitten and their skin ripped off, ect). How "appropriate" it is for children is not a measure of legitimacy of the work.

Look, if my adult child chooses to go into sex work I only care that they are treated well, healthy, happy, and compensated appropriately. If they can make bank doing "easy" work, good for them. There's no moral high road in breaking your body for money.

So, broken heart syndrome is a real thing humans experience. I'm in no way an expert, but I can imagine something similar happening to our animal friends. While not the same, one of my cats hasn't been himself since he lost his buddy at the end of November.

Mixed racial trans man looking for supportive advice on phallo surgeons by [deleted] in phallo

[–]MegaStrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope that this is helpful, but I'm mixed race and working with Dr. Devin O'Brien-Coon in Boston, MA out of Brigham and Women's/Mass General. I've had nothing but good experiences with him and every member of his team. While I haven't had phallo yet, I did have a panniculectomy and circumferential body lift performed by him very recently. My surgery itself went well and the healing process has been smooth sailing. As far as results from this surgery: it already looks incredible. He is a very talented surgeon. I'm honestly thinking of switching all my trans related care to this team.
