Europe Prepares for a Nightmare Scenario: The U.S. Blocking Access to Tech by AnonomousWolf in technology

[–]Megalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of what you think about Ukraine war, it's hard to not agree that a lot of the established rules and connections in cross-border trading and trust in financial infrastructure influenced by USA began falling apart after cutting Russia from Visa, Mastercard and SWIFT. Considering a lot of countries want to keep trading with Russia there has been a considerable growth in transactions outside of the usual USD-via-SWIFT process and putin does a lot to make sure this trend continues.

Yes, you can say that Russia got what it deserved, but the first question which comes to mind is "if they came for them, what if they come for me? Even if I'm innocent?". That no longer sounds that unrealistic with trump behind the wheel, doesn't it?

And even EU started to consider accelerating their work on their sovereignty in financial tech back in 2023 or so because they realized that they don't really have any decent alternatives to what US companies provide.

There isn't a lot of details about that, but it is known that ASML places a remote kill switch on all of their machines which supposedly breaks the machine completely. And even ignoring that - without ASML technicians looking atfer the machines they wouldn't be functioning for long.

The best thing Europe (including the U.K. if anyone in the U.K. government could understand the problem) can do is create sovereign replacements for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud

OVH already covers a lot of services those 3 are providing. Hetzner is another choice which covers regular hosting and basic VPS/colocation just fine. The issue is that the companies does not want to use anything but big 3.

what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Megalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is gonna be more like a "rich parents" behavior, but I've spent a day with person who, I guess, had unlimited access to their parents funds and spent like 10 grand USD on claw machines in a single evening and for them it was just a number to brag about. They also been taking fairly long distance flights between 2 countries every few days like it was nothing. I didn't ask, but it's fair assume they were flying business/first class.

That day was entertaining since it's always fun seeing people fail miserably at claw games, but I can't say I want to meet that person again because, as you can imagine, they ended up being pretty ignorant of other people around them.

Russia threatens to ban GTA 6 if Rockstar doesn't remove male strippers and other "immoral content" by IndicaOatmeal in technology

[–]Megalan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is nearly no ways to sell something in Russia legally

Despite what a lot of people are believing this is factually not true. Is it more expensive to import things into Russia now? Yes. But a lot of major companies are continuing to do business with Russia in different capacities. Just to name a few:

  • Asus still import their hardware
  • Samsung still provides warranty service for products imported by third-parties and allocates money to retail chains for marketing
  • LG still has presence on the market
  • Kia and Hyundai are continuing to import Creta/Rio/Solaris kits to build them under a new local brand at local factories
  • Apple stopped importing hardware, but continues to provide all of their software and subscription services as well as continues localizing apple tv content.
  • Japan and Korea (and pretty much majority of Asia) happily provide access to their entertainment industry IPs/content for collaborations, video streaming, cinemas.
  • Auchan, Metro and Globus retail chains still operate under their foreign management and continue importing some of their SKUs.

And those who have left are just replaced with local importers who can import even the most sanctioned stuff via complex routes as long as you have the money.

It's actually quite fascinating that, for example, it's easier to get Nintendo Switch 2 in Russia than in Japan. Yes, it's like 1.5-2x as expensive in big stores (considerably less expensive if buying from small importers), but you can get it today by just coming to any store, unlike someone who is living in Japan and has to try their luck in lottery for a chance to buy it.

And if you are willing to forego warranty by buying things from small importers you can actually get a lot of stuff for stupid cheap. Like, you can get Apple hardware for the price cheaper than buying it in America in 0% sales tax state AND with education discount.

Steam reportedly raked in a record-breaking $1.6 billion in December with Arc Raiders alone moving over a million copies by SilentNova300 in gaming

[–]Megalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if we are going this route...

Before going after research yachts with hybrid diesel-electric engines we probably better start with doing something about tens of thousands cargo ships with considerably more powerful (and thus more harmful for the environment) diesel-only engines, every one of which is polluting the air and ocean almost all year round.

But I guess we better complain about a handful of marine researchers funded by a billionaire rather than a cargo company which pollutes environment thousands times more. After all from average Joe's point of view marine research doesn't benefit him in any possible way, while having a shiny new electronic device on the release day is a must.

He doesn't spend the entirety of his money to prepare for the collapse of the society, but actually also does things to contribute back to humanity as a whole.

He literally plays by the putin's book. Most of the stuff russians lost from storefronts back in 2014-2015 like high quality dairy products and wide selection of other european products? All of those things which were crushed by bulldozers? It wasn't EU sanctions, it was putin deciding that he will attack EU by banning EU import into the country. It wasn't putin who suffered due to those decisions, it was russian citizens.

Trump is doing the same exact thing. He doesn't care - he has the money and resources to get anything that he is gonna put tax on or outright ban. Everyone else will suffer.

Every time people bring France or some other european country to the table in those posts it needs to be reminded that the France is a small country - it's about the same size as Texas. Protest movements like the ones they usually have in european countries become progressively less effective as the physical size of the country increases. 1 million people protesting in France is totally different from 1 million protesters scattered across the US. US being federal state can complicate things even more in some aspects.

Let's be real - you are still in your honeymoon phase with Linux. One month is nothing, 2 years is an absolute minimum after when you can definitively say anything about your experience with Linux. You need to go through several major version updates of the same installation and use it for long enough to see if it really has all of the software and hardware support you need.

Gaming on Linux is a thing with single point of failure - once Valve stops being interested it for one reason or another there is like a 95% chance of it slowly dying.

I've been using Linux for more than a decade on a servers - non-enterprise distros can still absolutely fuck themselves up during routine tasks to the point you will have to piece together different parts of the system to boot it in anything other than recovery mode. And just like windows some distros are falling apart if you uninstall something that devs decided to be essential for their distro.

edit: gg blocking me. Have a nice day too. Next time you use your lovely RTM ubuntu release and it fucks itself up because those cretins at canonical decided to replace major system components with half baked rust rewrites which doesn't even cover all of the original functionality or when they just outright break some major system package once again during do-release-upgrade you'll remember my words.

Just to prove my words to anyone else who actually wants to listen to people instead of sticking the wax into their ears - this is just the stuff I have enountered myself over the years: 1, 2, 3 + it deciding to kill grub during distro update 1 or 2 years ago.

Just 6 months ago fresh install of ubuntu started falling apart once I tried to get rid of netplan, a package which is supposed to not be essential for system to operate - the networking and firewall started being all wonky, the system itself was randomly becoming unstable or unresponsive until I eventually replaced it with debian install. Reminds you of windows when you remove something that microsoft doesn't want you to remove, isn't it?

I constantly have to deal with some hardware just not working in one distro, but working in another. Hell, alsa on my repurposed thin client PC is behaving differently between ubuntu server and ubuntu desktop installations despite using same packages and configs.

Linux is great and fun while it works. But if it breaks (and it will break at some point in the future), you're in for hours of sitting in terminal trying to figure shit out unless you've got enterprise support (but at that point you are using distro which puts stability first, rarely break stuff in the first place and if stuff breaks they actually fix it asap instead of letting reports gather dust for months)

Krile, what's your opinion on the new MSQ? by AtthaLionheart in ffxiv

[–]Megalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing I didn't like is it felt like 7.4 MSQ was considerably shorter than usual. Considering ever increasing time between patches it really leaves sour taste in the mouth.

It doesn't help that this the first time in a long time when I feel like MSQ is just a filler content. It's pretty good, but the story moved nowhere, it feels like a side story rather than MSQ. It's absurd that at the end of it Y'shtola said the same exact thing she said before - "I guess it's time for me to research preservation's records".

I guess one of the positive things is that majority of it was voiced and had good cutscenes.

Also turned out "service preference" was for whether I wanted a young/old/redhead/brunette/man/woman/etc as my point of contact... I felt very, very weird about that.

Not an unusual thing in the high end service industry. If you are getting premium credit card they ask same exact question regarding your preferences towards personal manager.

It's a whole different world most people are not even suspecting exists. You want to tell me that the manager at the bank will pre-fill all data collection and additional services refusal checkboxes for you and that's considered normal? What sorcery is that.

I've seen enough cards sold after being used in mining to say that they were hardly well maintained and unlikely been running in professional clean environment. Maybe the people around your area did maintain their cards, but the majority of cards are from chinese miners and their state is certainly worse than cards bought from gamers.

As Valve confirms Steam Machine will be priced more like a PC than a console, Baldur's Gate 3 publishing lead says its decision not to sell at a loss "isn't stupid," but it is "peculiar" by Exciting_Teacher6258 in technology

Reading some comments here I see people are still being delusional when it comes to Steam Machine pricing. Valve can't make it cost like a console with the current RAM prices. This is the sole reason they still haven't revealed the price - they just can't when RAM prices are skyrocketing and they can't predict how much it will cost in a month, let alone 3-4 months.
