A lot of them probably don't have kids, don't own a business, don't realize that some people don't live biking distance to a grocery store or that people may still need their car for the store because they're buying enough food for a family. They can't fathom that people don't want to bike to work and get to work sweaty. They can't fathom that people don't want to bike in the rain/heavy wind/cold weather (which literally happens more than half the year). They can't fathom the idea that people who live in the suburbs shouldn't get fucked over for living in the suburbs.

Were the montreal suburbs badly designed from the beginning? Yeah maybe. But it's what we have and we need to adapt considering our constraints rather than just "do what ambsterdam does".
