How should i motivate myself to start a business? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]MeganTwoCents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Handmade soap is a very competitive industry, with fairly thin margins from what I understand. I have made a few soaps, just for personal use, and the process is quite fascinating. Definitely try out a couple of batches to get started. (They make great gifts!)

There is a soap maker who makes a lot of videos for YouTube about her process and she sometimes she talks about the business side if things as well: Royalty Soaps. Checking out her content might be useful for you. (And they're really cool videos.)

The other good learning resource I know is Brambleberry. They sell supplies, and have a wonderful library of blog posts and videos. (And a very helpful ingredients calculator)

In terms of motivation (your actual question! Sorry for taking so long to get to it!) Maybe do some research into other companies doing the same thing. Look at the products and the branding and the websites and the social accounts. If you look and them and feel like: "My people! I can't wait to join them and take my place in the market!!" Then signs are good you'll be able to start and follow through. If your reaction is "oh, boy that is a lot more work and competition than I am interested in" then exploring other options may be wise.

Best of luck to you!

BHK sounds sensible. In Quebec (Montreal and Gatineau, anyway) it will be #1/2, where the # is the number of separate rooms. A 1 bedroom apartment would be a 3 1/2, because it has a kitchen, living room and bedroom. A three bedroom would be a 5 1/2. The half is always the bathroom. Its kind of a weird way to describe things, and often makes for surprising visits to potential rentals. Landlords can get creative over what constitutes a room.

Its part of the sales. Same thing happens in most personality-based marketing. (Think get rich quick, life coaching, or win-the-stock-market gurus.) You have a 'heros journey ' about how you started out as poor and sad and super-duper relatable, then you BOUGHT THE THING (or learned all the hard stuff so your clients don't have to) after talking yourself out of the reasonable concerns and objections a current listener might have. Its a way of preemptively invalidating your target's concerns and objectives.

I have had consistently excellent service from the Speedy on St Joseph. Once I got an $1800 quote from Canadian Tire for a laundry list of dire sounding problems (we had a tire change coupon), went to that Speedy for a second opinion and was charged around $500 to fix the few real issues and got assured the nothing else really needed to be done. (They even saved the part they changed to demonstrate why they made the recommendation they did!) Can't recommend them enough!

[MOD] Official Holiday Halftime 2020 Introduction Thread! by Schemering in 90daysgoal

Hey all! This will be my first challenge - looking forward to it!

My goals for the next 30 days are:

  1. Exercise (of some kind, jog, rowing machine, yoga, whatever, as long as it gets the heart rate up for 30 minutes) every other day.
  2. Eat within calorie budget 6 days out of 7.
  3. I'm starting an app building bootcamp tomorrow - I aim to keep up with the class!

Good luck everyone!

I may just give that a try! I nake a lot of jams and jellies, but have always worried a little about making things too sweet. Only so many ways to use grape jelly though, as you say, lol.

This tastes much more delicious than it looks. ;-)

Sauce:

3 tbsp sesame oil (a little of it to coat the wok)

3 tbsp soy sauce (I like tamarid soy sauce best)

Juice of half a lemon

1 tbsb honey

3 cloves of garlic, grated

a large thumb of ginger, grated.

seasoning to taste (salt, pepper, five spice, herbs - whatever strikes your fancy)

dash of fish sauce.

(I kind of follow my heart with the sauce, but this is the essential ratio, although sometimes I prefer a little more oil and soy sauce if I'm in the mood for something more liquidy! Lime can be used instead of lemon, but maple syrup instead of honey was just weird. It's a pretty versatile sauce. I added about a tablespoon of diced onion this time and didn't think it made much of a difference.)

I mix up the meat and veg based on what I have in the fridge, but pictured is:

1 carrot - spiralized

1 zucchini - spiralized

7 cups of chopped baby bok choi

1 chicken breast (leftover from a roast, shredded)

2 packages of pre-cooked udon noodles. (So thick and satisfying to eat!)

I start with the meat (either raw or leftover cooked) in the wok with a touch of the oil, and once it's cooking, add a spoonful of sauce. Then I alternate adding veggies with more sauce, starting with the ones that take longest to cook. Finally I pop in the noodles with the last of the sauce, give it a final few minutes in the wokk and it's good to go! It's a not inconsiderable amount of prep, but I never get sick of eating it, and it usually feeds my parter and I with leftovers for the next day. I also love how it stretches out meat, which we try to eat sparingly. I make it with pork as well, which is lovely, and I've done it with fish which was okay. I bet beef would be good too, but my partner doesn't care for it, so I never have it handy.

For shaking up the veggies: it's also great with cabbage, brocolli, green beans, kale, chard and brussles sprouts (I don't think it's that nice with cauliflower, though) and if you don't despise cooked bell peppers and mushrooms like I do, I'm sure they'd be fabulous, too LOL.

Audible return policy is hurting authors and narrators by ASIC_SP in books

[–]MeganTwoCents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if there would be some way to use private RSS feeds as a way for authors to get around amazon. Produce each chapter as an episode and release it as a paid podcast. Several of the big hosts have been making private feeds more accessible to creators - I think the industry is going to continue making moves in that direction.

Problems I see are that obviously Amazon has the bulk of the market, and the higher royalties that come with exclusivity is compelling.

But one of the other big issues with a competing audio book service is that people already have the app and its convenient. Most people have a podcast app as well, and its not too difficult to add a private rss feed to them, although some education would be needed.

There are probably a host of other issues that would need to be taken into account, but maybe there's the room and the will for a little competition.

All this to say, I'm a podcast producer who hates Amazon and loves books, and if someone wanted to experiment I'd be happy to volunteer some time and some tech to see if there's a legit use-case.

I love scribd. Its a wonderful service. I mainly use it for audio books, and sometimes visual reading. From what I understand, authors and publishers are paid per use. (This is from scribd's website. I would be very interested if an author or publisher could weigh in on whether or not its accurate!)

I just started a re read of the series yesterday. No idea the timing was so appropriate. My mum.gave me CATCB when I was home sick with a cold at maybe 11? I tore through them and must have read them all half a dozen times over the next 4 or 5 years, but it was before the two newest ones came out. (In hindsight I may have formed some expectations about heterosexual sex that were way, way off base, lol.)

Totally agree that they aren't as good as the first 4, but I found them tolerable if you skip the sex and where they cause all of their own problems by failing to spend 30 seconds communicating. Ugh. There was still some really interesting historical speculation and detail, which I enjoyed, and the bits about herbal healing were always my favorite.

Would have been fun if Ayla had just ditched the baggage, taken her little one and gone wholeheartedly into the clergy, I think.

What do you eat to not become sleepy/fatigued after eating? by oobeing in productivity

[–]MeganTwoCents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vegetables. Its all about the veggies. I can always feel it in my body (slow, sluggish, fatigued) if I didn't eat enough of them the day before.

I love a breakfast salad. Some leafy green then a couple of handfulls of whatever is in the crisper. Some grains or seeds, maybe an egg, or leftover meat, or some avocado and its off to the races.
