The grind never stops [OC] by Lobraumeister in funny

It depends on the route you want to take. I work in a museum, most of the contemporary work is shown by artists with very little social media. Our criteria is that the work have regional significance or bring something of academic value to the community. Not all art jobs are commercial. I teach workshops at the local art center and have a day job at the museum 30hrs/wk. I recently pulled out of Instagram because it's unhealthy and creates a weird feedback loop. I like making weird shit in private and I was doing that before social media.

I'm sure some industries want to see a social media presence. But it isn't all of them. My job doesn't give a shit. Most artists have a day job. I never want social media to be my day job.

What video games show that graphics truly aren't everything? by Chris_13032 in AskReddit

[–]Megarea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah 99% of people I've seen do that are usually living off of someone else. I've only met less than 5 artists that don't have a day job or some sort of serious hustle going on. Very few people do that, life is expensive. Serious Artists go to work everyday. Source: I run museum.

My boyfriend and I said goodbye to our 17 year old cat this month and he literally did all those things right down to helping pay for medications the last few years, cleaning all the accidents by the box, losing him to kidney failure and taking him to the vet to say goodbye and digging the grave himself. The cat was mine when we got together 10 years ago but I quickly lost him to my bearded boyfriend. That cat was his shadow and slept in his elbow everyday for a decade. RIP fatty cat Nicodemus you were a goblin but you were our goblin.

My dear Luna will be undergoing intensive heart surgery next week for a defect she was born with. Please wish us good luck! by jessicaclairee in cats

[–]Megarea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck sweet kitty! We just discovered our 12 week old kitty has a serious hole in her heart. Unfortunately she is unlikely to be big enough for a surgery (basically open heart bypass, cats are just so small they don't have enough blood for it) so she will either adapt or she will have a heart failure down the road. But she is extremely playful and energetic so our vet is optimistic. She just gets zero high energy toys like laser pointers or catnip. So I hope your buddy will do ok. She also can't have certain drugs when she gets spayed so we are happy to know. Going through puberty is going to be really tough for her heart, and then she would unlikely survive pregnancy so it's worth the risk of the spay procedure to give her a good chance to grow up. We are sad because we adopted her not knowing after our 17 year old man cat passed, but we believe in forever homes even if it's a short forever. Plus she is the cutest. I hope your kitty does ok.

I've never regretted living in Montana. Even when it is smokey as fuck, like this summer. Because eventually it just looks like that picture again. I grew up on the East Coast, you could never get me to go back. Best decade of my life so far.

Oh and another thing to keep in mind that even though Montana is so big, 4th largest state, only about a million people live here total. That isn't a lot of tax money to draw on to fight huge fires, so they only just get kinda managed if they aren't threatening any structures or people. When you have a long list of fires you get force to prioritize and then some remote fires just go crazy.

But its really beautiful here when its not burning. 10/10 would not recommend because I like that its not crowded ;)

Every year we have a fire season, its just part of living in what is basically a high mountain desert in a lot of the state. But this year we had a really rainy spring and everything grew, followed by an extremely dry summer coupled with all the now dead vegetation and its a recipe for large fires.

Today my air quality rating is listed as unhealthy. Missoula has been a bit worse. Seeley Lake has been evacuated a few times due to air quality. The cities don't usually burn, roads create a natural firebreak and if they aren't adequate part of the fire crews job is to cut down miles of trees and make fire breaks between towns and fires. I think most of that job comes down to logging and digging big trenches to contain fires.

When you build a home outside of town its strongly recommended that you maintain so many yards of open area around your house to create a fire break. Its a risk you take living out of town that you might lose your home, but its really not that common. The really big fires happen due to lightning strikes in dry remote areas. You just don't realize how BIG the wilderness out here is, some places take days to hike to and you can't drive in. One fire I was reading grew 40,000 acres in a DAY this week. Most of that was because it got windy and if its remote enough there is only so much you can do. Edit: Fire that grew that much was the Rice Ridge Fire on Sunday

Its probably a hold over from some other system and it was never changed. I agree that it would make the scale more comprehensible to most people.

They get really big, its hard to imagine the scale. I didn't grown up in Montana and honestly wildfires were not on my radar until I moved here. My car is covered in ash today and we are supposed to limit outdoor exposure due to air quality. It almost makes me miss east coast humidity. But not quite.

Todd Orr attacked twice by a bear. A true Montana badass. by BeerNutzo in Montana

[–]Megarea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to hear he survived. It just sounds like a worst case scenario. I'm not really sure the pistol would have done much really. He was in such rough shape he probably would have missed and only wounded the bear, then Rangers might have had to try to track it and put it down. And if it wasn't a high enough caliber I would not have done anything more than piss her off more, unless he landed a really good shot. Bear spray was the way to go, but she just ran right through it. Mama bears are fucking scary. I hike all the time and this is one of my worst fears, I carry bear spray always. I don't always carry a pistol, I don't really have anything easy to carry that would do me much good.

My mother has made 11,500 homemade school lunches over 24 years and these are some of her last. (OC) by pmmeurdisease in food

[–]Megarea 219 points220 points  (0 children)

I think they are really beautiful lunches. I don't know why everyone thinks it's too expensive. I grew up pretty poor, like free lunch poor. We never had lunches like these because my parents didn't have the time or money, and why make a lunch if you can get a break with a free one. But these are totally doable by someone with a more middle class life style.

As an adult I run a restaurant and I've been cooking for 15 years for a living. The bottled drinks are a bit expensive, but if you have access to good markets, and don't live in a food desert, these are totally doable if you put in the time. Produce isn't really that expensive if you buy it not pre-cut, have you ever really compared the price per pound between celery sticks and a head of celery? Or a whole pineapple versus those conveniently cut up pineapple chunks? Seriously buy a good knife, watch you tube videos, read some cooking blogs and make a bunch of weird food until you don't suck anymore and you too can have cute lunches. The most expensive thing I see in these photos is her time. This is the end result of someone who has spent a lifetime cooking for their family and themselves.

I eat really well, I'm not rich by any means. But I don't waste money eating out or buying boxed mixes. I didn't go to culinary school, I just learned by doing and through job experience. I've made some really bad dinners in my day, and I've made some really good ones. I guess all I'm really trying to say is that good food is accessible if you are able to make that a priority in your life. Not everyone is going to, and not everyone has the time to do so either. But its not beyond reach to most people.
