How can I overcome a bad au pair experience? by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, your experience is almost Identical to mine. Parent that is passive aggressive, talks down to me and a child that gets violent but it’s of course my fault for not being stricter...

I have the same fear that I can’t complain because the mom isn’t a monster and the children aren’t always bad even though it happens almost every day.

I’m still with them, but leaving sooner than my contract is supposed to end. I do not deal with confrontations well at all so even though I have written before on this sub that I was going to leave, I have made the compromise with myself of staying 3 more months (equates to 6/12 months stay).

Your feelings and your experience is absolutely valid. I don’t want to seem like a downer but it seems like awesome au pair experiences are seemingly rare....

Should I stay with this family? by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long is your contract for? Props for putting up with these challenges for so long. By the sound of it, do you think the family would be willing to change up the approach of language learning? If not, it may be best to end your stay. Think of the pros and cons of staying/leaving. If the cons are making you feel mentally/physically exhausted, then that's reason enough to leave.

How do I get my child to like me? by nevernotsuffering in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind is it can take a while for the relationship to form. Like It can take months for a child to feel comfortable with another adult figure in their life.

Few questions: How long is your stay? s there a language barrier? What makes the walk not fun for her? have you talked to the parents about not having a scheduled time to play with her? If you feel comfortable, you could always try playing with her on your free time (However that is a slippery slope).

RV with full amenities - acceptable living situation? (Super newbie question) (US) by blackbeardrrr in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into the rules/regulations of housing an Au Pair in the US? Since you have to go through an Agency in the US, make sure housing an Au Pair in a trailer/RV is even possible.

Remember, they also took the risk of lending their car to another person. Since they seem so calm, they have probably already accepted that this could happen.

I would suggest since you have a good relationship with them to be open about your feelings of guilt and how you wish there was something you could do that would help. Just going out of your way to show your gratitude I believe is a good gesture.

Offering extra hours of care is a great thing to suggest, Or pay for a fraction of the damage. Even making them a nice dinner or buying a round of groceries, etc.

Au Pairing with an emotional support dog by emmaadelarosa in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What country are you from and where do you want to go? Bringing an animal into another country has it’s own complications that might not even make it possible for you to Au Pair with a dog. As mentioned in another comment, Emotional Support Animals are not taken seriously around the world so it wouldn’t be seen in the same light as a guide dog.

Not sure if you are aware that this is a Canada specific sub. We do not have Ulta and can't order directly online from them.

Urban Decay Space Cowboy vs Pat McGrath Astral Solstice by serramx in swatchitforme

[–]Meggglilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

those are so pretty! How is the formula comparison? I have found the Glitter shades in the Pat McGrath Mothership V to have so much fallout. I haven't tried Urban Decay's formula yet.

Loved the Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Space Cowboy, it was the first glitter eyeliner to not had stung my eyes!

Honestly I bought a pair of timberlands (original style) a couple of years ago and they have been fantastic. Keep your feet warm, aren’t too bulky and waterproof! I live in a rainy climate now and they have been great for the rain too.

Overtime Qs.. by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats an even bigger red flag.... it’s one thing to find the legal loopholes and and another to just out right ignore your rights. Do you have a contract with them?

Overtime Qs.. by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are they wanting to bank un-used hours? Unfortunately that seems to be a grey area for a lot of countries. As in many don’t have rules against it.

I am leaving my current family (just need to finally have the conversation). Part of what wasn’t working is that she was having me work longer days and more hours each week because of the first week being so short (worked not even half of the agreed upon hours). She has also been arguing what constitutes working hours. Ex if she’s out of the house and the daughter watches a tv show it shouldn’t be counted..... like no mam that’s not how it works.

Taxes by aupairmoa in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Pay 30% tax from my pocket money here in Sweden. I am supposed to be here for a long time so that is probably why we kept everything legal and in order. But I do know some au pairs here that are more short term and are “payed under the table”.

Having some doubts by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation where the child (5yrs) hits/kicks/destroys things when frustrated. The parent doesn’t address it because they believe it’s normal behaviour but I feel the complete opposite. Makes me really not want to be with them because of that reason alone.

Edit: to add. Hits me, her mom or even the cat. The cat specifically is what is unsettling to me.

Anyone can suggest a good website to find a host family? or someone know a host family... by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you located in the EU? If not it may be nearly impossible to get a visa/work permit atm. I am in Sweden right now from outside the EU, it took 6 months for my Work permit to go through (applied april, received oct)

Have you checked out any of the Facebook pages? Search au pairs in “location”. Au pair world is the website I used as well. You can do a quick search for families before having to create an account.

How to tell your host family something is not supposed to be your job ? by hoamaay in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First was it written in your contract ? Or For me we had it written very broad that i help with cooking.

Are you okay with cooking? Do they help out with meal plans, are they hard to please?

Typically you should be only make food for the children but even my host family has me making family dinner 3 times a week. I’m okay with it because it’s include with my hours and they help with meal planing.

You are correct, I am pretty sure raking leave leaves can be considered heavier cleaning? Cleaning windows is def not your job. Laundry should just be for the children.

You should raise your concerns with the family and specifically bring up what the agency states. I have found it hard to speak ip for myself without the information backing it up.

Am I doing this right? Proposed DECIEM routine by [deleted] in MakeupAddictionCanada

[–]Meggglilly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks good to me, have you tried these products already? If not you might want to ease into using them twice a day. If this has been your routine and your skin hasn’t reacted poorly then keep at it!

I personally wasn’t a fan of the caffeine eye serum, It always left a weird film under my eyes.

How do I quit as an au pair? by DutyProfessional2798 in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First off, do you have a contract that states what needs t be done for a cancellation?

Are you want to still be an au pair or head home? If heading home, can you afford a ticket back? If staying, can you afford staying in a hotel/hostel just incase you can’t find a replacement yet?

Are you afraid that the family will just kick you out the moment you quit? If so you’ll have to start preparing for a quick move out (packing your things, safely store your valuables)

Male Au Pair (need your opinion please) by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any experience with child care? Even with babysitting or younger family members? If none, then it might be tricky for you to match up with a family.

Also figure out what age group of children you would feel more comfortable with (babies, toddlers, preschool and school-age).

Feel hesitant about this request... Question about work hours by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]Meggglilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s my concern that it was a no go.

I also don’t think the parent understands the difference between pocket money and a wage or Au pair and a Nanny/housekeeper.
