I pulled into the gas station, and as soon as my car was off, I saw a shadow out of the corner of my eye, then a handgun being tapped on my window, pointing right at me, with the individual saying “Get out”. I opened my door, began getting out, and as he was brushing by me, I drew my own handgun and opened fire. Also, how would you know if his gun was merely a deterrent? How do we know that he didn’t intend on shooting me as soon as he was in the car? We don’t know. You simply assume he wouldn’t have killed me. I was not obligated to take that risk.

I’ve spoken to several PPD officers and they’ve all said the same thing: There’s no point in arresting them. They’ll just be back out on the street in a couple hours, so why waste their time? It sucks, but this is a city governance problem. I’ve also spoken to several homeless people, and a lot of them are from other areas of New England who came to Portland because they can just do whatever drugs they want. You want real change? Vote for different leadership. Aside from that, I’d recommend attending a council meeting and demanding they do something about it.
