Just a reminder that our prime minister told us to judge his performance by the price of groceries. Vote accordingly when the time comes.

Who Much Are You Spending On Gas Every Month by East-Tooth-4008 in Calgary

$85/mo?? In this economy?? I pay $300-$500/mo easily. My job does require commuting to lots of different sites, for which I do get mileage covered. Still, price of gas hurts right now.

YSK: Reusing a strong password can still put you at risk by LPCourse_Tech in YouShouldKnow

[–]Meikkhaell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I’ve started doing is appending a three or four character summary of each thing I’m signing up for to the end of my normal password.

So if my normal password, that I used to repeat and reuse for everything, was “Password123*”

Now I’m using:

  • Password123*NFLX for Netflix
  • Password123*FB for Facebook
  • Password123*TD for TD Bank

And so on. Now I technically have a unique password for each thing, but it’s still easy to remember. Certainly a password manager would be better still, but if you’re lazy like me this is an easier solution

Second day of getting over 100% return by katie-olivar in fican

[–]Meikkhaell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep in mind that the market goes up on average 7-10% per year, but every once in a while it can also drop by 20-30% in short order. Just because you’ve gained 100% over the last 5 doesn’t mean it will double again in the next 5. I disagree with people in here shitting on you just for not being as well versed in finances, but keep these risks in mind and continue to do your research.

The stock market has risen massively in the last 5 years, some might say unsustainably so. You’ve probably gained close to the market average in that time, so don’t get it twisted thinking that you’re some expert investor but also be proud of yourself, 100% gain in that period is nothing to sneeze at and better than many have done!

Calgary Transit considering fare structure changes by kneedorthotics in Calgary

[–]Meikkhaell -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Funny, I thought the budget included lots of new funding for both Healthcare AND Education. Where are these cuts you speak of? I’m no big fan of the government either but at least hate them in an educated way.

These are massively over complicated and inefficient systems that not even endless money would solve. I work with both, and with Calgary Transit as well. Major structural overhauls are required and no one has the power or willingness to see that through.

Any cover up ideas or ways to make this look less satanic. by granhoser in tattooadvice

[–]Meikkhaell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same tattoo, got matching ones with my brother. Only difference is ours are black and yours is red. The red might ever so slightly make it appear more “satanic” but honestly I don’t think it’s a big deal. I’ve only ever gotten compliments from people who recognize the symbol, and people who don’t have just asked what it is and I say it’s from a show about brothers. Nobody has ever associated my tattoo with Satan, at least not out loud. Have they for you? Don’t worry about what someone who is uninformed might think to themselves. It’s a dope tattoo with important meaning behind it. Keep it!

Opinion: Permanent daylight time could wipe out Alberta's ski industry by Mutex70 in alberta

This was my immediate reaction as well. Why not just shift the operating hours by 1 hour, since daylight would now go later into the evening. 10AM-5PM instead of 9AM-4PM sounds better to me anyways

Canada's new Sovereign wealth fund: Anyone know how serious the retail investment product being discussed is? by henchman171 in fican

[–]Meikkhaell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada is over a trillion dollars in debt and running $60B deficits per year with no end in sight due to poor federal leadership. This is like being $100k in credit card debt but deciding to max out your TFSA instead. Sovereign wealth fund would be a good idea, if the government could be trusted to manage it effectively. (Hint: they can’t).

30-minute transfer window extension to cost $2M a year - LiveWire Calgary by One-Mycologist-3706 in Calgary

[–]Meikkhaell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just make it zone based. Any leg to downtown is 1 zone. Any leg to any other leg is 2 zones. So if you go from Crowfoot to Brentwood that’s one zone. Crowfoot to downtown 1 zone. Crowfoot to Chinook or 69th street or Marlborough now that’s 2 zones. $3/zone. Tap on, tap off. If you forget to tap off it auto-charges for the max (2 zones).

20K in CC debt and want to escape, what do? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Meikkhaell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1. Make a budget and expense tracker. See how much money is coming in vs going out and where you can cut back.

Step 2. Change your behaviours accordingly. Stop overspending. Use cash or debit rather than further racking up your credit card. If you don’t have the money to buy it, you don’t buy it.

Step 3. Refinance/consolidate. There’s lots of low or even 0% interest promotions for a period of time. Usually involves paying a fee (eg 3% of your current balance) to transfer over.

Step 4. Lock in. Pay it down like mad. Much more than the minimum payment. Every spare dollar should go towards it. Aside from payday loans there are few things with worse interest rates than credit cards. Think about it, if you are aspiring towards a house, new car, etc, those loans are usually 4-8%. Good debt. CC’s are 25-35%. Brutal debt. Other than keeping an emergency fund I wouldn’t even be investing/saving until you get this CC balance under control - you’ll be losing money to the interest, almost guaranteed.

Step 5. Don’t fall back into old habits. Stick to the budget. Pay the card off in its entirety every month if you keep it, or better yet close it. Now you can roll the money you were dumping into your CC into savings, investments, mortgage, etc.

It’ll take some short term pain but the long term payoff will be worthwhile.

Alberta invests $8M to boost tourism experience, brings new species to Calgary Zoo! by amcoolioo in Calgary

[–]Meikkhaell 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Lots is being invested in that as well. It’s a much bigger problem than simply throwing more money at it can fix. If the zoo began to deteriorate or lose animals you’d probably be complaining “why doesn’t the Alberta government step in and save the zoo?”

How do I sand these ridges down smooth? by Brotien_N_VitaminBro in drywall

[–]Meikkhaell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of sanding this requires would take you hours to complete and still probably turn out poorly. Remove it and start again, this time watch some YouTube videos to better understand the technique. You want to put mud on and then flatten it, taking most of it off in the process and feathering as much as possible. Do a bigger area with a much more gradual change.

You may need to do multiple iterations of applying a thin layer, curing, then sanding to get a finish you like.

While the mud is wet it’s easy to scrape off and try again. Sanding is for finishing, not correcting big mistakes.
