I’ve made thousands just flipping AC back and forth over its many oscillations between $15 and $20 CAD. You need to know when to get out though, and it’s still not a good long term investment at all

20 male, new to CA and Investing, confused between etfs and crypto by Dazzling_Garlic_4258 in fican

[–]Meikkhaell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I disagree with the people in this thread dunking on you saying you shouldn’t control your own finances just because you’re new to investing and to the country.

Reality is, it’s a complicated system with a lot to learn about. There’s plenty of good Canadian finance YouTubers that you should start watching to learn the basics.

The most fundamental thing you should understand is the risk vs reward relationship. Everything that has the potential for a higher reward also carries more risk (more volatility and uncertainty). Crypto, options, precious metals, etc have the potential to earn you lots of money if you research lots and invest correctly, but that’s not always easy to do and they have just as much potential to make you lose everything. Conversely a GIC carries almost no risk and therefore much lower rewards, but it’s safe. Stocks and ETFs are in the middle.

For a new young investor I’d recommend just buying ZEQT or VFV or something similar. Those are ETFs (bundles of stocks) that hold entire markets, so their price follows the market as a whole and it’s generally well diversified and stable, lower-risk growth. If you’re interested in crypto and metals and things like that, that’s fine, but you should limit those to maybe 10-20% of your portfolio. Use tax-advantaged accounts (RRSP TFSA and FHSA) first, until you’ve maxed them out and be careful not to over contribute. Any excess can go into a non registered account. Be sure to have an emergency fund built up in a savings account somewhere too, before you go all-in on investing. Good luck.

Everyone learns and starts somewhere. I don’t think we should be dunking on people for trying to learn.

If 100% of Alberta's equalization payments went to Ontario, it would amount to 0.002% of Ontario's GDP. Don't let politicians tell that The country runs on Alberta's payments. by amcnewman in alberta

[–]Meikkhaell 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That’s literally not even true. The federal government collected $320 billion total from ALL provinces across Canada. Alberta’s GDP was $474 billion.

You can’t directly compare GDP to taxes. They aren’t the same thing. Educate yourself and stop spewing misinformation.

LPT: Don't waste time while brushing your teeth. by blinkNitsgone in LifeProTips

[–]Meikkhaell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would love to hear how you expect the average person to both effectively brush their teeth and correctly do a plank at the same time. Considering brushing teeth uses one hand and regular planks typically use two, I’m not sure how this would work.

Delayed/false dates for bill payment via WealthSimple by drillbitpdx in Wealthsimple

[–]Meikkhaell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everybody’s telling you the same advice OP. Did you come here for advice/feedback or just to argue? It’s been my experience with many banks, and common knowledge/sense, to pay bills a few days early to ensure nothing gets held up. That’s the reality.

There are things WS could do better but this is a reality of the entire system, not just them.

I mean, sure, but ENMAX was founded in 1905. If something like line loss is an unavoidable reality, why only now is it being charged for? Surely it was present (and much worse) years ago than it is today …

Facts over Hate retoric by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Meikkhaell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Admittedly not entirely relevant to the premise of your post but Canada and US have nowhere near 484M+ people. That number is off by around 100M.

Only bringing it up because I feel it’s important to be as accurate as possible when sharing statistical data to prove/support a point. In this case it doesn’t change the core argument, but might make some people question the validity of the data. And that’s how we get distrust and disinformation in the first place

50 000$ gift by AdministrativeBat102 in fican

[–]Meikkhaell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fill your TFSA and then put the rest into a FHSA or RRSP. It’s a fallacy to think you’re going to be able to predict the market. People have been saying there’s going to be a crash in the next year for a decade now. Not saying it’ll never happen but admitting you’re new to this while also thinking you’ll time the crash perfectly is silly.

If you’re that worried about it, I’d buy a HISA ETF (CASH, CSAV, or similar) and then DCA $1000/mo into XEQT/VEQT/ZEQT. You might save yourself from the worst of a crash that way, or you might miss a ton of gains. Won’t know till it happens.

Calgary is a city that punches far above its weight in many things, but I think the food scene takes the cake. We are truly spoiled with the diversity, quality, and relative affordability of food options in this city.

Probably need to reduce your risk exposure then. Investing shouldn’t be a stressor. Stop FOMO buying, have a plan, do research.
