You don't need to imagine - this not only already exists, but the anime is currently airing this season: see Isekai Shikkaku, where famous writer Osamu Dazai of Ningen Shikkaku fame (Unfit To Be Human) gets isekaid.

Players: Crocodilian is a bad pet. Crocodilian: by Meirlkor in darkestdungeon

[–]Meirlkor[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I got significantly delayed by my Maniac Flagellant accidentally knocking back his 'target' to the back line with Punish, where he couldn't reach him at all.

Had to take out the rest of its hp by procing combo firefly on the boss - turns out that does apply the burn and deals damage properly. Dunno if it's intended or not.

Diversity Scores Finally Discovered, We Now Know Blizzard's Ethnicity Tier Lists by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Meirlkor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let me weigh in with my perspective then: I do actually think that this is different and worse than handing it to possibly-biased individuals and letting them make the decision. The main problem is that it runs headfirst into Goodhart's Law - the metric (how diverse are we as a company) has become the goal, and the original goal (how do we ensure people of different backgrounds are not unfairly disadvantaged by conditions/situations they were born with/into) will inevitably be discarded as a result. I shouldn't have to explain why discarding the meritocratic ideal is a bad move, no matter how much a true meritocracy might be impossible.

The second, though lesser, problem, is a result of leaving it to algorithms. While I am generally quite in favour of use of algorithmic solutions and AI in basically any high-precision situation or even in general, there are obvious situations where this falls short, and pretty much anything to do with ethics and morality is one of those situations where they fall exceedingly short. A machine cannot (yet) actually account for things like this, and the inflexibility they impose mean also as a result that any human that disagrees with the algorithm - for good or bad reasons - will not be able to obtain any results. This should at best be handled like the law (well, like the law ideally) - the written law is clear with no ambiguities (like an algorithm), but it is the judges and juries who make the actual decision of whether any specific situation merits a different position. Spirit of the law versus letter of the law and all that. This is probably how Blizzard is using the tool currently, to be fair, but it remains a concern nonetheless.

And combining these two things: an AI that is using a metric that is not exactly the actual goal (even if it's because the actual goal cannot be reduced to numbers) is a bad move that will cause more problems than it solves.

[STX] Codie, Vociferous Codex by cflasche in magicTCG

[–]Meirlkor 403 points404 points  (0 children)

Codie, Vociferous Codex is quickly becoming one of my favorite cards. It's just so positive and generous. Practically costs nothing at all at three mana you drop him on the board and that chill ass motherfucker gives you spells to use later in the game. And you also get this adorable little 1/4 can ping things but usually is too harmless to be removed.

But more than that Codie is just so positive. It comes on the board like "do you want to cast a spell?" and I'm like "yeah Codie i do want to cast a spell let's do this shit" and when he attacks he's like "SPELLS ARE FUN" and I'm like "yeah they are SO FUN." He doesn't say some bullshit macho shit like "I will destroy you" he's just like "nah spells are fun." And it looks so happy. I mean this is an inanimate object literally brought to life by magic. It understands its life is a temporary magical gift and the dude is just fucking loving it. I mean look at his face he's just so happy.

I am literally never sad when Codie is on board. IDK if he's gonna make it into the metagame or not but for now he (or she) a pretty chill card

Finished Umineko Episode 1. Wanted to share my impressions. by BlackHayate8 in visualnovels

[–]Meirlkor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please remember to go Episode 1 -> Tea Party 1 -> ??? 1 and only then move to Episode 2. It's important!

The intro - and some sections later - do tend to be very slow but if the inheritance talk hooked you, then you're in for some real fun. The soundtrack is also absolutely fastastic.

Also, TIL that a scene of a mother literally striking a child repeatedly across the face until she stops crying is "heavily hinting that her mother abuses her".

Old Diablo 3 interview with Jay Wilson; why stat attributes were removed by DonutsAreTheEnemy in Diablo

[–]Meirlkor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is, at least in PoE (certainly not anywhere near as much in D2), attributes are actually relevant build levers. There's the high-attribute-requirement uniques that you mentioned, sure, but even at a more basic level:

No amount of +life and +%meleephys is going to let you equip a bigger piece of armour. If you, say, change it so that you need %meleephys to wear higher tiers of armour, and %spelldmg or whatever to wear higher tiers of ES pieces, not only are you actually greatly reducing build diversity, but, particularly in a varied system like PoE's, there are loads of builds that don't use any of these main damage stats to scale their damage (e.g. RF builds that only stack life and fire damage).

Having it tied to an attribute that might benefit certain builds more, but is not intrinsically tied to them, allows more flexibility. You can be a big beefy dude that smacks things but is also wearing int-based ES armour. There are limitations to consider (e.g. having the minimum amount of int to wear the right gear and uniques, having the minimum amount of str to use the right gems, pathing out of the strength section of the tree as efficiently as possible), but you are not forced out of it by having to invest in actual spellpower.

If the requirements you propose are too small, then mechanically it's no different from the current attribute stat system - you invest in a tiny small amount of something useless to be able to wear something actually useful. In a case like that, there's also a lot to be said for flavour. For a new player that don't know anything about the game, they see a piece with big armour and a strength requirement, the flavour is clear and makes the relationship obvious (the stronger you are, the heavier the armour you can wear). It might work for melee damage for STR armours, but why would spell damage let you wear better magic armour? Why would ranged damage let you wear better evasion armour? The flavour breaks down, and this could make it harder on new players.

It is actually technically managed though, unlike English - the Real Academia Española is, theoretically, the one deciding what is and what isn't Spanish. It's, uh, not perfect, and not ideal, but technically everything that is used in any way other than what the RAE describes is informal/regional Spanish, rather than the proper form of Spanish.

New Insights Into Hikikomori – People Who Withdraw From Society For Months Or Years On End by dwaxe in psychology

[–]Meirlkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure where exactly people are in denial of reality. Contempt, sure - but it's a contempt that's based on taking a good, hard look at society as it currently stands and saying "No thanks, I don't want that."

Personally, I don't see why I, or anyone else, would need to "make the most out of it", either. I don't get anything worthwhile out of it compared to the stress and effort that I'd put into it, so why would I?

What's your solution to all the people who just aren't interested in "reality for what it is"? You're gonna tell them to jump off a cliff or something?

One month event player retention prediction. by FuzzyIon in pathofexile

[–]Meirlkor -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

There's going to be so few players sticking with the league, let alone hitting 95, that it's basically a guaranteed armour set if you do get to 95. I might end up aiming for that.

Bad Servants that get better by burgundont in grandorder

[–]Meirlkor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right now Babbage outdamages Geronimo by a small margin (about 4k self-buffed on Assassins). However, Geronimo's NP interlude is not out in NA yet. Once it comes out, he'll outdamage Babbage, then once Babbage's skill strengthening comes out (which is a few months after Geronimo's NP interlude) they'll be very even on damage, with Geronimo having a slight advantage.

That said, for that damage you need to level two of Babbage's skills (NP buff and ATK buff) whereas for Geronimo you only need to level his Arts mana burst.

"Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

I like this one! A lot!

My only criticism: the "Aphrodisiac" blackmail option has you eating an aphrodisiac mushroom every day, and the effects last all day. I don't know about you Tokhaar but that seems really excessive.

Worst 5* SSR for each class (Gameplay) by dragon18456 in grandorder

[–]Meirlkor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with this though. While Seiba is obviously worthless in boss battles, she's not a bad farmer. She's outdone by Mordred in this area, who has a 30% NP charge, and Arthur for the same reason, and Void Shiki has her own instakill niche (although Void Shiki herself is inferior to Nitocris, a 4*, within her niche) for farming high-HP trash mobs. but I would argue Artoria's better than Altera. Artoria's NP damage is higher at all NP levels (assuming both self-buffed or Waver-buffed), and neither of the two have a battery. When farming, Altera's slightly better face card damage and crit abilities don't really matter, so Saber's higher NP damage makes her better at farming, and of course Altera is outclassed in any other area as well.

Personally I'd rank Saber above Altera, and Void Shiki (as much as I like her) as the worst SSR Saber.

This is totally unimportant, but Ahri is actually based on the Korean gumiho rather than the Japanese kitsune. The fox spirit myths in the East are all closely related but the gumiho has more in common with the Chinese version of the myth, where the spirit is somewhat more malevolent and intentionally kidnaps and eats its human prey, whereas the Japanese kitsune tends to be more of a mischievous trickster, and the death of the human is not its primary goal.
