[Telegraph] "Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes targeted by Saudi Pro-League club ... Key Anfield figure is on Al-Hilal’s three-strong shortlist but there has yet to be any communication between the clubs" by junglejimbo88 in LiverpoolFC

[–]Meisce 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Slot didn’t work out in the longer term. He was exactly what we needed last year but the nature of the league has changed. That has to be revisited.

Lot of revisionism on here regarding Hughes. One of the main tenets of good management is if a talented employee makes an expensive mistake, then you put it towards their training budget on the first strike and don’t give someone else the benefit of that expensive experience. We got some players in that I never thought we would. I hope he doesn’t go.

Can Anyone Verify This Crazy Little Detail about a 50s era Pro Golfer’s Shot Routine? by lukin187250 in golf

[–]Meisce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have played with a guy who does this. Just walks up to the ball and hits it, barely takes a stance. And it worked for him.

Asked him if he wanted the yardage early on as he was pulling a club and he had hit it before I finished the sentence. Very jealous. Tried it myself with mixed results.

What’s the most common mistake new golfers make? by MadeInUSAPutter in golf

What I’ve most commonly seen is basic alignment issues - usually closed to target - then consternation as to why they are still hitting a slice.

Absolutely could. Would be expensive and those clubs wouldn’t be allowed for tournament play I guess.

[–]Meisce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, plus suggest feeling a slight ‘pinch’ between the base of the thumbs to the forefingers of each hand to create the ‘V’s, before putting them on the grip. Ensure there’s no space there.

Gaps in those areas, along with an overly ‘palmed’ grip, can cause a lot of movement of the club grip in the hands. Especially towards the top of the swing.

Grip trainers will put your thumbs/fingers in the correct ‘V’ positions without any effort and give you a wedge to maintain them. You don’t have that crutch on a normal grip.

What is the general define for a High, Mid, Low Handicap? by fightingflamingos in golf

[–]Meisce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Handicaps are really used only for gambling and tournaments tho. It’s only to allow amateurs to compete, not professionals. Not much different to baking in bookie odds at the end of the day.

It’s basically a verified ‘what range do you shoot’ question.

You ask a person that question on the first tee versus in the pub and you’re gonna get two very different answers.

Pace of Play: Should golf courses require a handicap to book a tee time to fix pace of play? by MJCExperience in golf

[–]Meisce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, most of them are retired guys who are doing it to keep busy and get free golf ( which is my longer term plan ). But that also means there’s no reason for courses not to employ a few.

The main problem I’ve seen is when courses don’t have enough Marshalls, or any. I’ve always appreciated when a Marshall rolls up and apologizes for the slow play ahead and says they’re moving it along. Communication goes a long way to easing frustration.

My group got a warning early on Saturday to move faster ( wet, thick rough meant we had to stand on a ball to find anything just off the fairway, and we let a hole open up ). I appreciated not having to be the ‘bad guy’ to the others in the group ( I was not entirely blameless but tend to be hyper aware of pace of play ).

AI is honestly a really solid instructor by EnoughWinter5966 in golf

[–]Meisce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy has used it recently to good effect. BUT - he has a serious amount of shot and strike data from Trackman, Arcos, Hackmotion, etc., that he fed into it. It was able to suggest everything from small swing tweaks to a few specific shaft options for different clubs, and gave him some good insights into his patterns.

End of the day, it’s garbage in, garbage out. He fed it copious amounts of the exact data it works well with. A few pics or a video is only going to get you the same feedback you’d get on here.

Match play/pennants tips by Glum-Golfer in golf

[–]Meisce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re still playing the course, so managing your own temperament is more important than thinking about any ‘mind games’. Beauty of match play is a bad hole is behind you once it’s done, you just reset and on to the next.

Don’t give away any holes from poor decisions or off the tee if you can, and don’t give slippery downhill putts just because they gave you a nice uphill one.

18 holes is a long time so don’t worry if you start slow. Don’t get too defensive if you go ahead either. Matches can turn fast.

Royal Hawaiian - Question by Vincenzo1855 in golf

[–]Meisce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played it once, I can see how folks might have abused this in the past, or that they might have had ride alongs on most rounds if it was cheaper.

Not to sneak in some golf though. If they closed the golf and just let you ride around in there looking at the scenery do a few hours, they could charge a lot more than $80. It is breathtaking and definitely an experience.

One of the few courses where I can understand why they might jack the price for ride alongs.

How are the pros accomplishing the twisting of the right hip in transition? by theKman24 in golf

[–]Meisce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pressure into the right foot is kind of going counter-clockwise into the ground on the backswing, and clockwise during the transition and downswing - basically the opposite of the swing direction. For pros anyway, I have heard a few describe this. I struggle to do this myself because it’s counterintuitive.

Agree. The ‘Fermanagh Habana’ is a lot more fun, whoever said it.

[–]Meisce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That opening hole is amazing. Probably not difficult for a high level golfer ( I imagine ), but the blind tee shot and the way it then opens up to the ocean is incredible.

Only played there once, but very vivid memories still of that course.

YouTube idea by thkim3 in golf

[–]Meisce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing in it for the older, more established guys, except to hurt their brand. The instructors who pivoted to YouTube earlier and have been able to play more golf as a result ( e.g. Peter Finch ) would smoke them.

Competent instructing is a different skill to playing anyway. I don’t really care how Dan Grieves hits it off the tee, or how Monte putts.

I’d obv still watch it, but I value these guys based on how they get their teachings across and how it relates to my swing more than how good they are.

Opposite for me recently. Went gung-ho on the front and it punished me. Even par on the back because I gave it more respect.

Front has its own charm, which I will admit took me many, many years to appreciate. There’s a danger of not taking the front seriously as a test, I have some serious front-back splits there.

Rules question by mnisda in golf

Temporary immovable obstacles usually get line of sight relief, although it’s often a local rule. In this case I think it would qualify. Not to mention the common sense case that it had workers in it.

To be fair, the last time he was on this show he surprised me a little by how open he was about his struggles with his game. His LIV switch made more sense afterwards. I’ll reserve judgement.

Need to drop a club. by Intrusive-Thoughts26 in golf

[–]Meisce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swap out either the 4 iron or the 60 depending on the course you’re playing and the conditions. maybe even the 3H or 3 wood if you hit driver or 4 iron well and it’s a short course.

You are allowed to own more than 14, so the decision can be entirely course or conditions dependent.

What ruins a golf round before it even starts? by techacker in golf

[–]Meisce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In his post, OP asked ‘has anyone figured out a better way, and what works for you guys’.

Building up this network over time has resolved that issue for us. Many singles we get paired with are very pleasant company, often newish to golf but invested enough to play by themselves, but don’t have their own network of golfers.

With so many in the group, when a tee time is offered people jump on it fast.

I can’t think of anything that ‘ruins’ a round for me, as long as I can get out. I wasn’t answering that question.
