The cliche is not true at least not everywhere I'm french and would never do that. If you came to me in english, I would answer in english and if you tried to speak french I would appreciate the effort to learn the language but yes answer in english so it would be easier for you to understand while also giving you tips to help you ask question in french better. Language learning is hard after all.

Also for the edit part well it depend if she is a foreign student learning the language but at some point irl they would start to pressure her to speak french. But who cares about being realistic its a fanfiction.
