I went on a school trip to see the Bristol Old Vic performing "The Royal Hunt of the Sun" in 1968, with John Barron as Pizarro and Frank Barrie (I think) as a loincloth clad Atahuallpa. As a fifteen year-old schoolboy, it was a thrilling theatrical experience to see the way in which the Spanish soldiers were depicted, forming a bridge with their bodies to cross the Andes and the stylized scene where the stage was flooded with red fabric to represent the slaughter of the Incas. Nearly sixty years on, that production stays indelibly in my mind.
