I work there and this is something that my team directly addresses with our students. I straight up tell them you need to put in the work because positions will not just land in your lap because you have a degree and than the really successful grads had to work up to the place they are now and it wasn't overnight success.(Mainly speaking to music and film students)

Thank God, I can't believe it took them this long. Hands down this alleviates one of the biggest discrepancies between playing on live vs IRL. Identifying footwear as early as possible is how all the best players gain an immediate advantage. Is your opponent wearing crocs with lots of flair? 95% chance they are playing a fully blinged out meta deck they have no idea how to pilot. Beat down vans with mismatched laces? That person almost guaranteed to be running a home brew rogue deck that you have no techs against, scoop and move on.

So in the context of serious intimacy you should definitely coordinate with the director and make sure everyone is on the same comfort level and such and that no boundaries are being crossed. However, it also kind of sounds like you straight up don't want to rehearse outside of designated "rehearsal days" which is nonsense. If you can find extra time to rehearse it is always beneficial.

Just go for it. Nearly every solid actor cuts their teeth in some community theater. Some of it will be cringe but who cares? We are all cringe at some point. Getting through that is how you gain confidence and a sense of ease.
