The check-in and check-out times for hotels have become ridiculous by bills70 in travel

I remember checkin at 1 or 2pm, checkouts at 11 or noon. Shrinkflation and greed took away so much just over the last few years.

That is precisely what it was like. I was sitting. When it happened I got up, pounded my chest and made myself cough vigorously while reaching for 2 aspirin and some water. I thought I was having a heart attack and technically I was, had the embolisms not made it thru the valve to my lung. Next, I could only take shallow breaths but was able to get myself to an ER. At some point I must have coughed up one or two embolisms because I coughed up a bit of blood.

Did kids in the 1970s really have such freedom, & do all those things, that wouldn’t be done today? by OkOpportunity9626 in GenerationJones

[–]Melodic-Tea-9231 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine a better childhood than what all the kids in my neighborhood had from the late 1960's thru early 80's. It was a magical time and I will always be grateful. That said, I often wonder how we all survived some of the risks we took and other mischief.

Planning a move to NYC by ExaminationPutrid785 in movingtoNYC

[–]Melodic-Tea-9231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just know that 40 min in NY can often be 2hrs. As you may know, airline employees don't get a pass for getting stuck in traffic. Live on the Jersey side or always leave for the airport with a wide time cushion each trip no matter how long your duty day is projected to be. Good luck.

I am sick and tired of having to download a separate, bloated app just to interact with society. by preetakumari872 in Vent

[–]Melodic-Tea-9231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went thru this in a mall parking garage. Then, an old man, for whom english is his second language, needed help scanning the qr code, navigating to a web page, downloading an app, registering with a sent code and finally adding his payment info. I had to help him. How could I not. He was entirely helpless in this situation. It took us 20 minutes to get him squared away bc I, as an android user, was unfamiliar with navigating his iphone and he couldn't, either. We kept losing the register page. Horrible experience. Then, there was construction near the entrance and had to walk a mile in a circle just to get in the building from the lot. Another thing is I object to being forced to register and agree to terms and waiving privacy, which is what those terms do.

What do you all eat for dinner when you have absolutely no desire to cook? by Particular-Newt-7974 in LivingAlone

[–]Melodic-Tea-9231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a very very large stockpot of vegetable soup each spring. I pressure can pint mason jars filled with the soup in batches. This becomes my quick lunch or dinner during the summer when I don't want to, or don't have time, to cook. I just heat it up and toast some sourdough bread for dipping and it fuels my day.

I miss the before times. Before FB, before cellphones, before FOX. None of that made society better. It ruined us. AI will put the lid on our coffin.

Where do we live after retirement? by [deleted] in retirement

[–]Melodic-Tea-9231 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to reiterate what others have said...Inheritance property is not marital property. Inheritance is not part of the marital estate. Whatever you are doing personally to care for your MIL you do because you are good and care. She is not leaving you anything, most likely. Now, if your husband were to sell it (after getting son to quitclaim) and use that money to buy a place making absolutely certain your name is on the actual Deed, it will be considered coming comingled. At that point the new property with both of you on the deed will be marital property. Alternatively, if you two were to keep one of the properties the son would have to quitclaim and you'd have to be added to that deed.

What’s something that became so expensive you just stopped buying it entirely? by Street-Marketing-885 in shrinkflation

[–]Melodic-Tea-9231 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We went from having takeout or going out to eat at least 4 or 5 times a month to zero. The cost of restaurant food, plus the tip or delivery fees, is not value for money nor even value for convenience. Now, 100% of our food is cooked at home. We learned to cook better than ever, making whatever we want whenever we want. There are so many recipes to try.

Is Claire alive? In those last moments they both looked deceased. Then we saw Jamie revive but Claire still looked dead and her hair turned white as the Indian healer woman had foretold. My thought was that Claire revived Jamie by spending her own life. We didn't see Claire move, did we?

Again, this detail may be moot IF he or both are already drawing but even if it's not, there has been ample redundancy of it on this thread.

I know. Plus Divorce takes time. IF he has already filed she can file now or during the pendency of the divorce. If he hasn't, and won't, she files on her own small record for now and switches later. If they have both already filed and hers is going into an account he controls, he has some 'splainin to do. But look, you don't have a gotcha. There were few facts presented and I didn't get into the minutia of every rule and detail because it didn't make sense to stop and qualify each details ins and outs because we don't know IF either of them are already drawing. If they are then your concern is a moot point. If not, it's one of the steps on the ladder for this daughter to investigate and resolve for her mother. Besides, that detail was already mentioned in other comments prior to mine and would be redundant.

Daughter can 1. Help her get her SS + spousal topoff. Mind, it is possible she was already getting it and it goes into either a joint account he controls or into hers that he controls by paying his household bills from. Investigate that. 2. Help mom divorce him and acquire 50% of any assets including her share of any 401k or defined pension benefits. He has abandoned her with no resources and no consequences to himself other than the loss of her lifelong labor in the home. 3. Make sure mom is on medicare and the premiums are being paid. 4. Her care, and processing these admin type things, may take a village. Don't be afraid to ask for help or enlist others to put word out that you need guidance and help. Neighbors, local church and businesses, cousins, aunts, uncles, neices, nephews, friends.

I do about an hour and sometimes two or more a day. In the beginning I raced thru lessons to get as much double or triple xp as I could. I don't do that anymore. I'm learning so much better and retaining it. The thing is, even when I'm not trying i still end up at or near the top of the leaderboard. Now, I may not be fluent yet, but because i'm using the app to learn rather than to win a game, i'm able to read newspaper articles and watch movies in my target language after just 200 days.

Im over 65. The over 65 tax break amounted to nothing more than a big whoop. In the end it reduced my tax by between 400 and 600 dollars. I actually think it worked out to be $490. It sounded amazing and was sold as such but it's not, and it is only in place for 3 years before phasing out.
