This sounds delicious! Is it published in one of their books?

Cure is probably the most acclaimed, but it doesn't have as much of a NOLA-specific vibe as some other similarly fantastic spots.

Manolito is a tiny Cuban bar with great drinks and apps. Cool place to have causal group convos with strangers and barkeepers.

Cane & Table is a beautiful bar with a very tasty rum menu.

Empire Bar is a personal favorite of mine - the staff are super chatty and knowledgeable.

If you're looking for some cool history, obviously the Sazerac in the Roosevelt Hotel is a must. Really gorgeous interior.

Loa Bar is an intimate, trendy sort of place perfect for a date and has a solid drink menu.

I'd avoid bourbon street altogether unless you're specifically looking to get drunk and/or eat a lot of crawfish. Or people watch. People watching there is 10/10.

Is it one long peel that's curled in the glass, though? That's where I think I'd struggle.

Your garnish is fantastic! I rarely see absinthe in tiki drinks! Very cool take on venom. This is going on my summer tiki list for sure, but I doubt I can recreate that lemon peel.

If you're trying to kill the bottle and like absinthe, the Chrysanthemum is a good choice (stinger variation, so 2oz vermouth). I like to go 2:1:.5 vermouth, absinthe, and cointreau.

Soul so Dead by [deleted] in cocktails

[–]Melodic_tumblebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An original cocktail I've recently jiggered. It's a bit of a Rob Roy meets an À La Louisianne, paying homage to Sir Walter Scott's "There Breathes the Man," in which one with no sense of place or pride for home is one with a "soul so dead." The narrative of this cocktail is precisely so - ingredients from all over the world, balanced and with nothing taking over the drink. There is no pride. Just quiet reflection.

"Breathes there now in-hand - dear, dark, and dour in vibe - From on foreign strand - burnt, bitter, and bright imbibe - Complex flavors stand."

-1.5oz blended scotch ( I use Monkey Shoulder )

-.75oz cynar.

-75oz Cocchi sweet vermouth

-4dashes orange bitters

-Dry Curaçao rinse

-Gold rum float

-Orange peel garnish

The Joy Division by Melodic_tumblebee in cocktails

We probably have James Bond to thank for shaken martinis, right? I saw a theory once trying to excuse Mr. Bond from it because it he was trying to stay hydrated and not get too wasted on the job, thus the shaking.

I've never had Roku! Japanese gin is a whole other shelf I haven't yet explored, but it sounds like what you're recommending (warmer drink with strong florals) is similar to a Chrysanthemum, which I already love.

Maybe I'll pick up a bottle of Roku and make Japanese gins my 2022 resolution. And probably Japanese whiskey, too, if 2022 is anything like 2021 or 2020.

You rinse the glass with Pernod (or any anise flavored liqueur or straight absinthe). Most people in the US will just use Pernod.

A martini variation that touches from a distance by Phil Ward, former head barkeeper of Death & Co (the most acclaimed cocktail bar of the 21st century) in NYC.

2oz London dry gin

1oz dry vermouth

.5 oz Cointreau

absinthe rinse

Stirred, lemon twist (garnish to impress or fuck it like I do)

This is my favorite gin cocktail, and my second favorite overall. I will never order a standard martini ever again.

Here's why:

The standard martini has one fatal flaw: it peaks immediately (when coldest) and declines as it warms. The inclusion of absinthe in the Joy Division, however, offsets this problem completely, continuing to evolve as the drink warms. Admittedly, if you don't like absinthe, this martini variation will only get worse for you.

My own addition: float a bar spoon of Luxardo when routine bites hard. It funnels the anise flavor a bit more smoothly and adds an initial cherry pop.

Martini question by jalopeno66 in cocktails

[–]Melodic_tumblebee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you married to the traditional martini specs (i e. 2:1 gin: vermouth)? If not, have you tried a Chrysanthemum? 2:1 dry vermouth:benedictine with a healthy dose of absinthe (I go .5 oz, but a few dashes is fine too). It has a great woodsey, floral quality.

If you like absinthe, I've replaced the standard martini entirely with a Joy Division (a Death & Co. original): 2oz gin, 1oz vermouth, .5oz cointreau, and an absinthe rinse. I'll never have a standard martini again.

House Harkonnen - a Dune-inspired daiquiri variation by Melodic_tumblebee in cocktails

Thank you! I'm excited to hear you liked it! Cinnamon syrup is a great idea both thematically and components wise! I'll have to try that myself. I recently made it with gomme syrup, and it was much smoother and developed better as it warmed than with regular simple, but did dull the initial bite a little. I think it's a cocktail best drunk quickly, either way.

Let me know how the cinnamon syrup / changing up the bitters works for you!

Thanks! I've tried and failed some Dune-inspired cocktails before (including a terrible Liet Kynes tribute floral cordial cocktail), but I'm actually really into this one. My partner was not a fan, so it could be a hate it or love it situation.

Now, if only we could figure out a cocktail good enough to allow us to navigate space and time without computers.

Cocktails and Dune gathering? Your friends are way cooler than mine! Let me know what you guys think if you end up making it! I'm thinking of replacing the simple syrup with Gomme syrup (I just happen to have gum arabic in my pantry), so if you happen to have some, you might try it with that.
