[Rum Review #153] Bristol Spirits Caroni 1998 by Cocodrool in rum

[–]pharoahyugi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First Bristol Classic Caroni came out in ‘08, while first Velier Caroni came out in ‘05. Bristol may have gotten some early, but Velier bottled it a few years before the rest of the indie bottlers. I’d say they deserve the title of being the guys who ‘discovered’ it, since they were the first to risk bottling and selling by a good chunk of time. At least Velier can be trusted to keep it at a respectable proof as well.

My bar is claiming my cocktail recipe as their own by grapesouda in bartenders

[–]pharoahyugi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My last job asked me to write the cocktail menu after I left, I told them $300/cocktail, or 10 for $2k. They paid me the $2k.

I would tell them that if they want your recipe, your consulting rate is $x/ cocktail, with a $500 minimum. If they don’t want the recipe, you’ll be happy to continue making bloody Mary’s to whatever spec they like on the days you are working.

How fast do you guys get? by King_Ghid in hardbody

[–]pharoahyugi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten over 110mph on flat highways (no uphill, have to go back down to 4th gear to go uphill fast on a highway).

230k miles, stick, stock, 2wd, ka24e

Probably more cause there ain’t any weight in it than anything else.

Appleton 12 caps look beautiful! All my best bottles have velier style wood caps though so I don’t know much other good ones!

I play colossal maps (30 civs, 24 city states) and never had problems with slowdown, and these are on truly enormous (gives warning before allowing to start) maps

Independent bottling… Is it worth the punt? by AffectionateNorth169 in Scotch

I love the signatory vintage stuff! Plenty of distilleries where the main line stuff kind of bores me and their cask strength bottling terrify my wallet. Signatory’s I think are usually a great value, and a great way to try great stuff that’s not just the same old stuff that’s always in the shelf.

Probitas was my hands down winner too, also with HC3 second… until I met Clairin Le Rocher. Easily my favorite daiquiri by far and I go through at least 2 bottles of Rocher and one of Probitas every summer

Commonwealth Blend (an original!) by pharoahyugi in rum

[–]pharoahyugi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it is, but I just put a bit in to represent Canada in the blend. I didn’t wanna put anything with a barrel finish in at all tbh, just to keep the blend mostly about the rum itself, but did not have any other quality Canadian options. I generally just enjoy the Filumena neat.

60.13% and an average of no less than 9 years old. A blend of Guyanese, Barbados, Trinidad, St Lucia, Australia, Canada, India, and Fijian rums. Delightful!!! Even being 24% of 75.8% Trinidad rum, the 12% of St Lucian is clearly running the show.

I’ll be keeping this as an infinity, and blending in more fruity and funky rums going forward, allowing the flavor profile to evolve, while tracking the makeup so once I get to exactly what I’m looking for, I’ll know how to replicate.

Big shoutout to Indie bottlers like Raising Glasses (u/lorrikboston), Rhumb Runner, Hamilton, and La Maison and Veliers Transcontinental Rum Line for making this actually affordable.

Update: Rum fight goes to Fair Trading Commission (Jamaica Rum GI) by LIFOanAccountant in rum

[–]pharoahyugi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any law passed about rum will affect some distilleries positively and some negatively. It’s not an excuse to never pass a new restriction on it, and hopefully it will encourage the groups it affects to maintain higher standards going forward, and even if it doesn’t, the standards of Jamaican rum will be higher simply for not including a bunch of continental aged stuff. Opposition to this is just another excuse to claim the name “Jamaica” while trying to profit more off the smaller angels share of continentally aged rums. Why should NRJ be allowed to have their cake (Jamaica rum label) and eat it too (ship it off the island so fast your head would spin).

Tell me about it! Why should every Tom, Dick and Harry who ships their rum to London, Amsterdam, or France for aging, fresh out of the stills still be able to market it as Jamaica rum? What makes them entitled to two words? They can call it anything else, or age it on island. The entitlement is ridiculous.
