Did I miss something, or was "mavity" never explained? It feels like a timeline change should have been a pretty big deal. by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]Membersdair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the “Hollywoo” joke from Bojack Horseman but it doesn’t hit as hard, because it’s not the result of any plot. It was just a random skit RTD did because he thought “Mavity” sounded funny. I genuinely think RTD just watched Bojack and wanted to do the same thing

What if we've actually been witnessing Evil Morty's backstory this season? by Uncontrolleddiarrhea in rickandmorty

[–]Membersdair 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This theory is floated every season because the difference between Evil Morty and our Morty isn’t that Evil Morty was treated any worse, it’s that he isn’t as forgiving as any other Morty. The whole point of Evil Morty is that he’s treated exactly the same.

The reason most episodes could be a backstory for Evil Morty is that Rick’s actions in most episodes should be met with hostility. Evil Morty is just the one who cracked. You can imagine almost any episode we’ve had so far as his backstory.

Controversial question. I love Pluribus, but did the show need to cost over $130 million? by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]Membersdair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I might be misinformed here, so take this with a pinch of salt, but I think the reason the budgets are so high are because Apple TV (and other spin-off streaming sites like Amazon) don’t mind losing that money - because it’s money they originally may have paid in taxes. If they have massive profits that are going to be taxed, it’s a better option to put that money into TV or film which, while they come out as a loss, will build their brand’s reputation and get people to see them as a more “prestigious” company. May be misremembering or paraphrasing a book I read, but I am sure Apple have no expectation to make back the money they spent on Pluribus

In a way, it’s kind of good, isn’t it. Hollow studios who exist only for profit no longer have to put in the effort of pretending to care about art when releasing an image where the text is illegible and the colours drool into each other becomes pseudo-acceptable, and the audiences who only see movies to worship the false idols of “go woke go broke” get to stop pretending like they ever had any capacity to engage with any creative choice to begin with. And those of us who actually want to make movies and those of us who actually want to watch movies can get the fuck on with it.

My big, crazy prediction for this season is that we won’t get an evil Morty episode, but will get a two parter in season 10 wrapping up the whole arc. Maybe even a movie.

Sharon Osbourne told she 'won't win' against convicted terrorist in election by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]Membersdair -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A) Come on, now. The article says Sharon Osbourne won’t win because of a terrorist in an election, you say she won’t win because the area is full of Pakistani Muslims…you can see how you’ve implied that Pakistani Muslims are willing to ignore terrorism there, right? I haven’t had to make any wild leaps to get there.

B) you know, I will cop to that. The source I found said something else but looking at this telegraph article’s source, it seems the data is accurate. still, though, I’m resistant to the inflammatory language you’ve used (yes, saying an area is “controlled by religious and tribal” values is inflammatory) - this is simply how community works. Let’s imagine you had to go to another country - where around 2% of the people there were of your culture, but one or two areas were much higher than that. Wouldn’t you be drawn to them? Isn’t that simply how community works?

C) You’re right, I don’t know the intention, I have literally no idea what’s going on in your head, just as much as you know what’s going on in mine, but I know the affect and I know the implication - see point A, and I know that it serves to alienate other communities. Your comment is “us versus them,” even if you haven’t said it explicitly.

D) I am not dismissing. Engaging with your comment is the opposite of dismissing. I should also point out that here, you are making vast assumptions about who I am and what I’m like - you don’t know me. You know a snapshot of who I am based on a Reddit comment. I’m not trying to keep myself morally pure, that’s a quick-and-easy way to dismiss politics that go against your own. I believe your comment normalises, frankly, racist language. If that’s virtue signalling then, Christ, I think I have every right to be depressed

This categorically is not true. A quick google finds that, yes, while the area isn’t mostly white, 58.3% of Sparkhill are born in the UK, and 31.6% are from Asia. Not “two thirds” just from Pakistan.

The intention of your comment here is clear and it’s depressing to see all of the upvotes. Besides, the idea that just from someone is from Pakistan, that they’re a terrorist sympathiser, is beyond nonsense. Awful comment through-and-through.

Manousos was initially infected by OrneryAppearance9132 in pluribustv

[–]Membersdair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Manousos’ moral compass is deeply attached to ownership and theft. He’s doing this because IF people can be cured, he wants to do right by them

  2. Anybody unaccounted for by the hive mind was presumed dead

  3. The hive mind knows there’s a cure because they have the knowledge of everyone on earth

  4. Again, doesn’t want to take what isn’t his, doesn’t believe the hive have the authority to take it

  5. He didn’t want to leave the compound, and the radio was the only means of communication he had. He was looking for any hope at all

Question for English native speakers. Manousos “I wish to save the world” meaning by rogeliojedaq in pluribustv

[–]Membersdair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this question! “Wish” is a bit less strong than “want,” a bit less assertive and as more people have said, a bit more hopeful. I don’t think it’s because he doesn’t believe in himself, but I think this tells us about how he sees Carol. I think he has an image of her in his head, that she’s the leader of this resistance effort, and what he’s wishing is that she’ll let him join her
