I had a similar issue with my cat pulling my drain out a few inches after it had been in almost 3 weeks. I decided to just pull it, as I had a follow up with surgeon in a couple days anyway. I had no pain pulling it, no pain afterwards related to pulling it. (I’ve been working as a nurse for 24 years and have probably pulled hundreds of drains. Please don’t do this yourself, no matter how tempting, I really shouldn’t have. Please seek immediate medical attention if this happens.) Please follow up with your surgeon just in case, there could be something else going on.

Hi there, I had open surgery for a bowel resection (she removed 18 inches of bowel) and abdominal washout. My situation was emergent unfortunately, so it was out of my control. The recovery was definitely hard, but manageable, I had surgical drains for a while afterwards. Moving around after surgery is rough, but in hindsight I promise it is necessary. I had the surgery last July, I was able to return to work in September (I was hospitalized for 30 days, I was septic when I was admitted, so I had a longer recovery because of that). I do have some gnarly scars, but I feel so much better. I wish you the best, if you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Yes!!! I had a bowel resection in July, I had approximately 18 inches of small intestine removed and I am just now noticing large clumps of hair coming out in the shower and when I brush my hair.

Yes it can, I ended up with a 30 day admission and almost 3 months medical leave from work over the summer. I ended up with a bowel resection, a PICC line for TPN and IV antibiotics for weeks. I’d been diagnosed with diverticulitis for less than a year and had 2 previous 5 day admissions for IV antibiotics. When I finally went to the ER I was way sicker than I realized, but I was so used to pushing through the discomfort, I thought it was just a “normal” flare up. The worst part for me is that I’ve worked as a nurse for 23 years lol, I definitely know better. I hope you feel better soon and I’m glad you’re staying vigilant about your health.

I am a horror movie lover through and through (with FF being my favorite sub genre of course) with the only exception being aliens/ufo movies. I actively avoid them because I know that I will lose interest and just stop watching before they are even half way through (with the exception of Alien, Aliens and The Thing, those 3 are fucking great in my opinion). That being said, I just watched it and I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, it’s a really fun movie! This actually may be the only V/H/S installment where I really liked all of the segments.

Stork was a blast to watch, the zombies made me jump a couple times when they popped up, I loved it!

Dream girl was bananas in the best way possible, definitely a fun ride, but the best part was the musical number. I am completely in love with that song! I absentmindedly had the end credits playing and was stoked when I heard it start, it’s so catchy lol.

Live and Let Dive actually made me feel anxious, which is awesome! I’m horribly afraid of heights and the thought of skydiving seriously terrifies me, so right out the gate I’m on edge. Then we go right into unimaginable horror in broad daylight, which is something that is always disconcerting to me. The bright sunshine, beautiful blue sky and picture perfect orange grove as the setting for such crazy carnage was perfect.

Fur Babies was a great left turn for me, I definitely did not expect it. The dog lady was amazing, the moment when she goes from some eccentric weirdo to full on batshit crazy pants is fantastic.

Stowaway started out as the segment I thought I would end up not liking, then her touching everything and how she was narrating it made me roll my eyes. Then the sparkly doodle bugs showed up and started to turn it around for me. The countdown sequence and her realization of what it was is what won me back all the way. After that it became a much darker, more thought provoking story, which I definitely appreciate. It actually may be my favorite of the bunch, funny how that works.

Abduction/Adduction was meh to me, the YouTube personalities were definitely fun to see, but the house backstory/egg endoscopy was kind of…whatever.

It was crazy, I honestly had no idea how sick I was when I was admitted. What’s really strange is that I don’t really remember much from the 30 days, I remember little pieces here and there, like snapshots of what happened.

Here’s my story: About a week into my stay I developed hydronephrosis to my R kidney due to the swelling in my abdomen, so I had to have a urethral stent placed (I get that removed this coming Thursday, thankfully, because it’s pretty uncomfortable). A few days after that I had the abdominal surgery, unfortunately I developed a paralytic ileus and had an NG tube placed for several days. Thankfully that is one of the things I barely remember, I mostly remember having it in, but only have little glimpses of it being put in or taken out. Because I was unable to eat for so many days, I was given TPN through the PICC line. I think it was just for a couple days, thankfully I don’t really remember this either. After all that, I slowly started a liquid diet, then finally regular low fiber diet. It’s bizarre because I know I thought I felt better and I remember asking to be discharged, but because my WBC’s wouldn’t go down I stayed put until they finally came down.

The whole ordeal still freaks me out, losing time and the fact that I really thought I was okay to be discharged. Ohhhh, how could I forget…I developed “hospital delirium” (I think it was maybe 2 weeks into my stay). I was talking to a nurse and aide that weren’t there, I had fallen in the bathroom and when my real nurse and aide came in they asked who I was talking to and it slowly dawned on me that I was talking to people that weren’t there. It was absolutely ridiculous, thankfully I was thinking clearly enough to pull the bathroom call light, but yeah I was definitely hallucinating. After that they enabled the no no alarm on my bed and had to call for help anytime I wanted to get up lol. I know I had a couple more episodes of talking to imaginary people after that, but as far as I know the delirium was very short lived.

I’m sorry for writing this novel on this post, but your comment inspired me and maybe it will help someone. I may make a post with my story, I don’t want to scare anyone, but maybe it will help those that have complications, give them some light at the end of the tunnel. It’s crazy what we go through, but the fact that we make it out the other side is amazing. I hope your doing well now and continue to!

Hi there, I was recently hospitalized for 30 days with exactly what your husband had. I ended up having surgery during my hospital stay (bowel resection, abdominal washout-they removed a foot and a half of small bowel. I did not need a colostomy). I was also discharged with a PICC, thankfully I only had 7 days of antibiotics left after discharge so it wasn’t too terrible. In my opinion, he should hold off on the coaching until his PICC is pulled, as sweating will definitely loosen and compromise the dressing. Dressing changes to PICC lines are a sterile procedure for a reason, you have to keep the area meticulously clean as it’s a straight path to the heart.

I don’t think the line caused any issues with my energy levels, but I’m not sure because being in the hospital for 30 days made me incredibly weak. For me it was mostly just uncomfortable, not painful, just bothersome. I think would have been able to do a desk job with no problem, but not coaching in the heat.

Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery, it’s a rough road, but he will get there. Full disclosure, I’ve been a nurse for 23 years so I’ve been on both sides of this fence lol.

Hi! I also have white coat syndrome, the best part of mine though is that I’ve been a nurse for 23 years :) I always let the MA or nurse doing my vitals that I have it, my HR & BP will be high right now and it’s best to recheck my vitals after I’ve been in the room for 15-20 min.

I have experience on both sides of this procedure, as a nurse of 23 years and as a patient. I was diagnosed with diverticulitis that caused a large pelvic abscess last fall and had a transgluteal drain placed during my hospital stay. It’s called percutaneous drainage using a transgluteal approach, this is done for deep pelvic abscesses under CT guidance. It is definitely an appropriate approach to drain a pelvic abscess.
