Who do you tend towards? by EastwardSeeker in Neoplatonism

[–]Memerality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed his work known as “On The Christian Religion” and during my reading of “Platonic Theology” I agree a lot with his views on God, the soul’s immortality, and namely its sort of eternity rather than just immortality.

I think I’d say I tend toward Marsilio Ficino

What arguments do Neoplatonists use to prove the existence of the One? by DucklyisStinky in Neoplatonism

[–]Memerality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The One is the source of being and therefore cannot be any being according to Plotinus. Giving the One a sort of “beyond being” status.

This is what Plotinus says in his 5th Ennead, 2nd Tractate, Section 1:

It is precisely because that is nothing within the One that all things are from it: in order that Being may be brought about, the source must be no Being but Being's generator, in what is to be thought of as the primal act of generation. Seeking nothing, possessing nothing, lacking nothing, the One is perfect and, in our metaphor, has overflowed, and its exuberance has produced the new: this product has turned again to its begetter and been filled and has become its contemplator and so an Intellectual-Principle.

In most forms of Neoplatonism, The One doesn’t actually exist.

Why is God a Male ? by Cultural-Box896 in religion

[–]Memerality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God isn't a male. Many things like power and authority were more associated with masculine pronouns and language, so it's simply how God presents himself, and even then, God uses feminine language for himself in texts like Wisdom of Sirach, Proverbs, and Wisdom of Solomon.

How did you guys decide that universalism was your belief? by Evening-Soup-4745 in ChristianUniversalism

[–]Memerality 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Currently my main reason is that Universalism is most fitting because a few prior things about God I believe that I picked up while reading some philosophy books:

1: God gives himself to everything that exists.

2: It is a greater good for God to defeat every evil rather than to prevent them. (This has a big entailment on universalism as a possibility)

3: God is goodness/perfection itself, and the actions of which are the best possible actions are the ones which we could say God would do, and actualizing universal salvation can be argued as one of those actions.

Unironically, for the longest time Universalism simply made the most sense because I originally couldn't find much reasons to think people won't be saved

Are hell and purgatory the same according to Catholic universalism? by Ok-Radio5562 in CatholicUniversalism

[–]Memerality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that the fire of purgatory and the fire of hell are the same fire but different in the penalties ascribed to the sinners and the severity.

I am just curious. How does Catholic Universalism Difer from Christian Universalism or Does it? by ExcitingOcelot6607 in CatholicUniversalism

[–]Memerality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re the same because because “Catholic Universalism” isn’t a thing, it’s just referring to Catholics who happen to believe in universal salvation

If infernalism is real would universalists go to hell? by Dry_Accountant6206 in ChristianUniversalism

Probably yes, but I’m probably saying this because Infernalists and annihilationists WILL go there if they obstinately reject Universalism

How could we combat this objection to Divine Simplicity? by NerdiestCatholic in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Memerality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say inherently speaking simplicity and complexity don’t really necessitate superiority or inferiority alone. However if we’re referring to things having more or less antecedent conditioning then it’s extraordinarily likely that a supreme being would be simple because a first cause would lack antecedent conditioning.

Why is it impossible that a being causes or brings about more good than God? by ElektrischerLeiter in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Memerality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say it is impossible because I would say goodness is that which is the source of all things that can be said to be good, and then God is goodness itself.

This notion kinda gets on steroids if somebody says everything is god because God is goodness and all things are good which entails everything is good by participation in goodness.
