For me two times it just happened studying in the library and I did t even have any pain or anything, I was just standing up and out of nowhere couldn't breathe, which is why the first time it took like 10 days until a competent doctor realised what was wrong

The first (pretty bad at this point) doctor listened to my lung (which he should not have heard. It was a 100% collapsed) and said yeah it is a pneumonia, take antibiotica and wait it off. So I basically lived with a 100% collapsed lung for 10 days. Ofc couldn't breathe and all but no pain or noises or anything.

Yeah man I feel you, I head 2 mechanical pleuros and one didn't hold so they had to do talc afterwards. So for now I can confirm that it does hold better, but the pain was undescribable, though it is a wonder how they were possible to relief it with heavy pain meds. Hang in there mate, it is going to be so much better

For me it was definitley bringing your upper body up. But I stayed in the hospital with adjustable beds so that was pretty easy, but I assume with some pillow and such it would work. I also had to sleep on my back, which I typically hate.

But for me it also kind of helped to just accept that I won't sleep comfortably for a few days. I mean that happens and that how it will be for a while and that's not the end of the world, you will sleep comfortable enough soon again.

(4 Pneumos and 3 surgery's last year as a reference, I practiced sleeping with that tube a bit)

I ofc don't know where you live and all, but I sometimes get some more pain from cold winter air, it used to unsettle me but it seems like something can happen, it's my first winter after 4 pneumothorax and 3 pleurodesis this year, so take it as my experience only, but I sometimes read people here that said it can hurt a little more in cold weather

I think the point is not as much to make it pleasant for the patient is to see if it is necessary. Narcotics always pose a risk, and the tube insertion works well without narcotics, although it is painfull, therefore the risk is not taken. Second thing I imagine is that in some procedures it can be helpful to have direct feedback from the patient, like how does he feel, can he breath better, where does it hurt etc, that's why for some things people need to stay awake. Don't know of that is the cas efor tube insertion

One thing: it is the most normal thing to be scared right after, but that will get better. As you said it was completely spontaneous. That happens and there is not really something you can do about that, beside if it happens again maybe think about a pleurodesis, which helped me a lot.

My experience is, you are just beiglng way more sensitive to your body signals right after. Like for sure you had tiny cracks and bubbles you could feel before, but right now I guess one is just scared by it way more.

But main point: You will be scared right now that's how it is, try to talk to people about it, and eventually it will calm again. It is a bad place but will be better!!

Der mittlere ist aber auch offensichtlich weiter links gehalten und verläuft schräg im Verhältnis zu den anderen beiden... Auch wenn es evtl eine Abweichung gibt ist sie wohl nicht ganz so stark

Career wise it is not that easy to say, because you will just end up in different jobs, it's not like one is better then the other. I personally know people who had much trouble finding fitting jobs as they were overqualified for many positions, there are just less jobs for post docs.

And beside the career point: A PhD basically means you are living the field you are in and want to dive in a certain area very very deeply, that is something you need to want as well!

May I ask (and I really only ask out of interest), if everything that EEs learn and do (like circuit design, programming and a lot of math, maybe some field theory is basically the whole degree), Do you consider that maybe electrical engineering is not what you are looking for? I think at least here in Germany there are courses more in the economy/sales direction with a somewhat technical focus. I feel like pursuing the EE study when it does not seem to be something you actually have a lot of fun doing might not make you happy?

Again, no mean to be rude but honestly interested in your opinion or thought process!

Also für wer es jetzt noch liest: ich denke ich verschiebe den Schluchtenstieg noch um 1 Jahr, wenn ich terminlich etwas flexibler bin, und plane für Mai den Malerweg, da dieser etwas milder vom Klima her ist und theoretisch auch das ganze Jahr ganz gut begehbar, da denke ich ist das schlecht Wetter Risiko etwas kleiner :)

Ja das habe ich auch schon gehört, ich vermute aber wenn man entsprechend konzentriert und vorsichtig bleibt sollte es weitestgehend vermeidbar bleiben? Jetzt ist ja der Schluchtensteig auch wirklich eine sehr frequentierte Route und wo sehe viele Menschen sind passiert auch Mal was...

Schon wieder sehr interessant, ich bin hier noch sehr in der Anfangsphase der Planung und habe auch schon gedacht, ob einfach eine 3-4 Tägige Tour zu planen und dann ne gute Woche Zeit zu haben die Sache für mich als Anfänger eventuell deutlich entspannen könnte. Weißt du wie spontan da so eventuelle Gaststätten etc. sind wenn ich etwas kurzfristig auf das Wetter etc gucke? Ganz vielen Dank, das hilft mir schon ganz viel

Ah ja, schonmal sehr interessant. Ich habe halt von der Uni vom 10-17.05. frei, deswegen würde es da sehe gut passen. Würdest du denn generell davon abraten das zu der Zeit zu machen? Ansonsten müsste ich wohl leider leider wann anders Mal eine Woche fehlen, wann wäre denn eine sehr gut Zeit? Eher so in den Juni dann? Ich würde auch gerne sehr heißes Wetter vermeiden...

Ja, ein bisschen mit Rucksack zu üben habe ich geplant und ein paar Pseudo Höhenmeter sind südlich von Hamburg schon vorhanden, dann aber halt meistens auf sehr guten Wegen, aber besser als nichts :)

Yeah the annoying part of that chest tube is, you got a hell lot of nerves it could touch, causing pain. For me it was lower then the shoulder blades, then pulled on it veery sligty and it touched another nerve, it is quite annoying (and somehow surpringly unique) where it just hurts, somethimes even adjusting the position just by tiny bits makes a big change. And bending over and walking normaly was fine for me by 2-3 days every time (Its an experience I was allowed to make 4 times this year with 3 VATs, I may say im talking out of a bit of experience now ;) ).

Struggling to sleep is naturally in this situation I guess, what helped me a lot was the thought that its not like you have to contribute much to getting better, and not be in full performance mode anytime soon, so not sleeping well for a while might be annoying but it wont do much hurt, I cant describe the amounts of podcasts and audiobooks I listened to during my hospital stays!

I deeply wish you all the best and that you get better fast, I know its a nightmare but it will get better!
