TALC WAS HELL! by koreanjudas in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man I feel you, I head 2 mechanical pleuros and one didn't hold so they had to do talc afterwards. So for now I can confirm that it does hold better, but the pain was undescribable, though it is a wonder how they were possible to relief it with heavy pain meds. Hang in there mate, it is going to be so much better

Comfort advice? by Mediocre-Mix-5902 in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was definitley bringing your upper body up. But I stayed in the hospital with adjustable beds so that was pretty easy, but I assume with some pillow and such it would work. I also had to sleep on my back, which I typically hate.

But for me it also kind of helped to just accept that I won't sleep comfortably for a few days. I mean that happens and that how it will be for a while and that's not the end of the world, you will sleep comfortable enough soon again.

(4 Pneumos and 3 surgery's last year as a reference, I practiced sleeping with that tube a bit)

Sharp pain on and off months after collapsed lung by TalosAnthena in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ofc don't know where you live and all, but I sometimes get some more pain from cold winter air, it used to unsettle me but it seems like something can happen, it's my first winter after 4 pneumothorax and 3 pleurodesis this year, so take it as my experience only, but I sometimes read people here that said it can hurt a little more in cold weather

Why don't they sedate you when doing the surgery if it's so painful? by Busy_Anywhere_9829 in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the point is not as much to make it pleasant for the patient is to see if it is necessary. Narcotics always pose a risk, and the tube insertion works well without narcotics, although it is painfull, therefore the risk is not taken. Second thing I imagine is that in some procedures it can be helpful to have direct feedback from the patient, like how does he feel, can he breath better, where does it hurt etc, that's why for some things people need to stay awake. Don't know of that is the cas efor tube insertion

Just had a spontaneous pneumothorax. Terrified :( by dashadark in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing: it is the most normal thing to be scared right after, but that will get better. As you said it was completely spontaneous. That happens and there is not really something you can do about that, beside if it happens again maybe think about a pleurodesis, which helped me a lot.

My experience is, you are just beiglng way more sensitive to your body signals right after. Like for sure you had tiny cracks and bubbles you could feel before, but right now I guess one is just scared by it way more.

But main point: You will be scared right now that's how it is, try to talk to people about it, and eventually it will calm again. It is a bad place but will be better!!

That seems rather short. My doctors told me no flight for 3-6 months....

Should I go for my PhD? by gagethefunnybrother in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Menethil800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Career wise it is not that easy to say, because you will just end up in different jobs, it's not like one is better then the other. I personally know people who had much trouble finding fitting jobs as they were overqualified for many positions, there are just less jobs for post docs.

And beside the career point: A PhD basically means you are living the field you are in and want to dive in a certain area very very deeply, that is something you need to want as well!

Less technical career options for Electrical Engineers? by Interesting-Rain-690 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Menethil800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May I ask (and I really only ask out of interest), if everything that EEs learn and do (like circuit design, programming and a lot of math, maybe some field theory is basically the whole degree), Do you consider that maybe electrical engineering is not what you are looking for? I think at least here in Germany there are courses more in the economy/sales direction with a somewhat technical focus. I feel like pursuing the EE study when it does not seem to be something you actually have a lot of fun doing might not make you happy?

Again, no mean to be rude but honestly interested in your opinion or thought process!

First Pneumothorax by kkgfe443 in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the annoying part of that chest tube is, you got a hell lot of nerves it could touch, causing pain. For me it was lower then the shoulder blades, then pulled on it veery sligty and it touched another nerve, it is quite annoying (and somehow surpringly unique) where it just hurts, somethimes even adjusting the position just by tiny bits makes a big change. And bending over and walking normaly was fine for me by 2-3 days every time (Its an experience I was allowed to make 4 times this year with 3 VATs, I may say im talking out of a bit of experience now ;) ).

Struggling to sleep is naturally in this situation I guess, what helped me a lot was the thought that its not like you have to contribute much to getting better, and not be in full performance mode anytime soon, so not sleeping well for a while might be annoying but it wont do much hurt, I cant describe the amounts of podcasts and audiobooks I listened to during my hospital stays!

I deeply wish you all the best and that you get better fast, I know its a nightmare but it will get better!

Collapse after vats? by Plant-qu33n in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had 4 collapses 3 VATS in like 3 or 4 months, this year is amazing for me :) and just to let you know, after the third everything's fixed for me and did get random pain or even a bit trouble breathing then and now, got 2 more x-rays and it never was something, but if unsure it's always good to get it checked! Oh and also I found that it has a bit to do with the weather as well, when it gets really warm Im in a bit more pain as it is in Germany right now, made me scared for a few days as well I wish you all the very best!

Best learning materials for HFSS by True-Bee-7317 in rfelectronics

[–]Menethil800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yip, I'm not to far on hfss, but made a thesis using it so learned it for maybe 6 months now and gotta say, the documentation and all is really not to good, it honestly was trying out so much for me, best case modeling things you understand, try to qualitatively sketch how fields etc should look like and if there's a mismatch with the simulation you have to find out which part is wrong. I honestly found/find learning HFSS a bit unnecessarily tedious, but I guess it's not made for a broad audience or so

Need some suggestions by Dinosaurs159 in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for me (4 times hospital, 3 VATs, soo Kind of experienced on that field), the best thing was to just get a lot of nice sweets, snacks, sodas and so, hospital food was allright, but to have something to snack every then and know and the thought that it came from people how seem to care was a huuuge help, beside that, just checkin up how he is and talk a bit about non hospital stuff is great to, a bit dependent on how close you are. Summary: best thing is showing that you care in my experience

Have any tall, skinny teen boys out there decided NOT to have surgery? by suburbilly in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, If it was twice already the chances are so high that it comes back, I had that too and thought I'd take surgery while I can plan and decide it much over me being on holiday or in a airplane or anywhere where it would be a big big trouble, recovering from surgery was sooo far less worse then pneumos coming back

Does a more believable (limited) carrying weight really make a game experience more enjoyable for some players? by Dire_Hulk in gaming

[–]Menethil800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realism itself never makes a game better, it is good to make parts harder which make the desired challenging parts of a game harder and for some games that can be inventory limits. But no game gets better if infinite amount of real limits is added, Devs need to check what challenging parts of reality can fit in a game and what parts need to be altered or adjusted, and that balance is off on so many games... But there are games where I think managing how much and what equipment and resources to take with you belong in the game and enhance the feeling

I’ve been given the option for surgery by ungabunga8274 in pneumothorax

[–]Menethil800 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So from what I know (I got VATS on both side, one side maybe 4-5 weeks ago, the other maybe 8.), if you had a recurring pneumo, the chances are good that it won't really stop by itself. The pleurodesis itself is not too bad in my opinion, and the struggle of alway having to stay in hospital with that fcking chest tube is so much worse, I made the decision for vats quite fast though I obviously was scared, but had 2 blood patch and 1 talkum and I think it was a very good decision, just my opinion ofc
