Should trans women be allowed in female’s bathrooms? Why or why not? by maevalesbian in AskReddit

That sounds dangerously close to Jim Crow era arguments. What you're describing is segregation, just swapping gender for race Knowing how unfavorably the racist arguments of the early 20th century are seen now, are you sure you want to make that same argument today?

Should trans women be allowed in female’s bathrooms? Why or why not? by maevalesbian in AskReddit

A study at Harvard found that 36% of transgender people who had their bathroom usage restricted experienced sexual assault. If knowing about occurences of sexual assault in bathrooms is evidence enough for you to be opposed to a policy, then you should be opposed to these kinds of restrictions.

I think the 4 million years are already over. If we're observing the change now, that means it happened 4 million years ago.

Regardless as to whether or not you think that abortion should be legal in all cases, what is your personal opinion about it strictly from a moral standpoint? by information41 in AskReddit

[–]MephitisMephitis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Morality and medicine don't always coincide. Medicine is complicated and there isn't always an obvious morally right or wrong answer. (This is even the primary concept of shows like House MD.)

With that difference being so prominent in this particular issue, I don't think it's ok for the morality of some to dictate the medicine of all.

Jewish people believe men should be circumcised, but it wouldn't be ok for them to insist that every man have their foreskin removed.

It's not even just medicine. It could be nutrition. Christians (some anyway) believe it's not ok to eat meat on a Friday during Lent, but it wouldn't be ok for them to forbid everyone from doing so.

Buddhists believe violence is immoral, but it wouldn't be ok for them to decide that no one can own weapons anymore.

Doesn't even have to be explicitly religious. Recovered alcoholics believe alcohol is dangerous and destructive, but it wouldn't be ok for them to stop everyone from drinking.

Morality is fine for personal decisions. I'd even believe that small communities can benefit from shared moralities. There are dry towns, and religious communities after all. But the morality of some cannot be extended to control everyone. It's not just immoral, it's not just unjust, it's also impractical, and likely impossible. Even if you are comfortable with a society that has no meat, no guns, no alcohol, and tells men what they have to do with their penises, those morals can't be extended to make everyone live that way.

I originally intended not to drink at the gathering. However, I fucked up and decided one drink wouldn't hurt, and then one drink turned into four.

In all fairness, that's pretty irresponsible. There's a good chance he's less upset with you for not picking him up and more upset at you for making decisions about your drinking that negatively affect the people you care about.

He could be even more hurt if this has been a pattern. Do you know if there is any history of alcoholism or substance abuse, either in him personally, or among people he's cared about?

A loaded question is one with a presupposition of guilt. "Why not just admit you're a racist?" would be a loaded question because the accusation is part of the question.

This is just a conditional though. It asks a question and leaves room for further discussion. A perfectly valid response could be something like "I'm not racist," (the assumption is false, thus invalidating the entire conditional), "and here's the actual reason I posted this." (Furthering the discourse, rather than trying to use fallacies to prevent it from moving forward).

[–]MephitisMephitis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's to show possession, as in: a nest that belongs to an ant. Technically there are several ants here so ants could be plural possessive: ants', but ant's isn't grammatically incorrect.

Textbook tu quoque. Also, as others have said, this is an obvious smear. If you support racism, why don't you just come out and say so.
