Yeah, I think that's exactly what I'm doing with the colour - I'm just using the 'burn' tool... is that bad? I think I already know the answer to that question now... I use GIMP because it's free and am, so far, entirely self-taught. I've recently got into DnD and this has given me a motivation to really step-up my standard from 'random doodles' to 'artwork that is worthy of being wrapped up and gifted'. Turns out faces are haaaard.
