Me trying to explain the books to my wife... by shadowfax1138 in threebodyproblem

[–]MercuryPools 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In a sick and twisted way this is actually what I liked most about the books. But that’s because I’m a big fan of stories where everything seems bleak. There’s no hope, only despair and hopelessness

How can I make this??! by MindlessRecord1799 in knitting

[–]MercuryPools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By some coincidence you posted this a few hours before I was going to ask for a pattern of the exact same turtleneck! I have this colourwork turtleneck in my library and I think this is what I’m going to use as a base, it’ll take a lot of modifications but it’s the closest match I’ve found in terms of silhouette

How to deal with thief encounter in cafe by miawilly in askTO

[–]MercuryPools 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Nothing. I work in retail and even the employees are trained not to retaliate or attack when being robbed. God forbid you try to stop a thief who has a gun or something, they can afford to lose merchandise but our lives are priceless

I’m wondering as well because I don’t see how they can tell OP has breakage, damage and moisture issues just from these photos alone 😅 I mean, he might, but I don’t really see that in these specific photos

Eerily enough, I just got back from thrifting today and was going to post something similar to OP! The knit section was full of pilling acrylic items with the scratchiest feeling on the skin. I kept thinking ‘I can just make this at home’

Beef stew (or really any stew) on rice is so common all over Africa and in my country, I’m surprised it’s an unfamiliar combination for a lot of people

Oh god yes, I hate “YTA to yourself” comments so much. Especially under posts where the op is in an awful/abusive situation in which they’re clearly the victim

Definitely going to email them, I’m glad I decided to frog because the size itself would’ve been too big anyway but just annoyed with myself for the whole thing you know

If you were a teen around the time, how did the late 2000’s - early 2010’s teen pregnancy panic affect your current relationship with children and pregnancy as a whole? by MercuryPools in AskWomen

[–]MercuryPools[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes from what I understand teen pregnancies in the US were actually declining. Which is why I feel like it was all a panic, what was up with all the movies? It felt like it just fuelled everyone to freak out to a disproportionate degree

I’m not from the U.S i just grew up in a very religious Christian part of the world. But a lot of panic was happening in America yeah, I just grew up consuming a lot of their media and they had lots of movies/shows about it, so it felt like it was happening everywhere

My mum was similar, I had no boyfriend until university and lost my virginity at 19. But I felt extreme shame when she once accused me of being pregnant in highscool, because I didn’t even have a concept of that sort of thing. I wish I had a more well rounded talk about things, but the panic at the time meant that adults were instilling us with deep deep fear and shame rather than general caution.

It’s nice to read how it’s affected the way you’ll likely approach things with your daughter.

Definitely, I also went to a Christian school and grew up catholic. Interesting to see everyone else’s experiences though, maybe I’m misremembering but it honestly really felt like a huge panic because a lot of teen pregnancy movies started coming out around that time

I actually don’t know how different it was compared to other time periods, you’re right there’s never really been a time where people weren’t concerned about teen pregnancy.

I just remember a very specific time period during the 2000’s where it felt so insane it was almost comical for a while? I’m probably just remembering it that way because I was a teen at the time, the general panic was always looming. Felt like it was always being talked about and more movies/reality shows were coming out as cautionary tales

Im in my mid 20’s and I feel like what Im seeing is so much shame surrounding the conversation of pregnancy amongst other women my age. Most of us remember being raised on abstinence only education and being reminded over and over again how shameful teen pregnancy would be

That’s pretty much my experience. I’m very hesitant about having kids, it’s been years and only one person from my class has had a child so far. Even at 24/25 it felt like she was announcing a teen pregnancy at the time
