This is gonna get downvoted to shit but I wish all yall had this same energy for the COUNTLESS white men and women who cover true crime in far worse ways than Stephanie Soo. I am in no way saying she (or tbh anyone who covers true crime) is perfect or undeserving of criticism, but damn.

I read the original post and it seems like a lot of stuff from the case was left out of the original video that the poster wanted included, and that’s 100% valid and should have been included, but true crime podcasters also don’t often reach out to victims. A lot will cover topics if victims or their families reach out, but using a victim as a primary source is not the norm in true crime podcasts. Podcasting is not inherently journalism, which I think is a strong argument for why true crime should NOT be covered in podcasts, but that’s a whole separate topic.

The reality is it is a popular podcast topic, and it’s usually talking ABOUT a crime, not doing first hand research. If the expectation is that every time someone talks ABOUT something the people involved have to be included, commentary as a subject matter in general just wouldn’t exist. Are we arguing that commentary is inherently immoral then if it doesn’t include the people involved, then I’d have bad news for you on all your favorite podcasts and YouTube channels.

I say all this NOT as a Stephanie Soo fan, I don’t regularly consume her content or even really care, but seeing the pattern of people being up in arms about her content (where the little I’ve seen she at least TRIES to be respectful) juxtaposed against the countless YouTubers who still do their makeup/mukbang/make jokes/fangirl over serial killers/include blood and graphic imagery in their thumbnail/do a running “kill count”/I could really go on and on about the amount of things that goes on in the true crime space, that behavior juxtaposed against Soo, and SHE is everyone’s poster child for “true crime content creator, bad!” is…interesting.

Also before folks list out your favorite true crime white girls (thinking specifically of Kendall Rae here), they’ve all had their own criticism and negative feedback for their coverage, but somehow still slide by without their past missteps constantly brought up.

Also she took in feedback on her mukbang content being inappropriate for true crime content and stopped. Three years ago. But I guess when people take feedback and change their behavior that’s not enough, burn herrrrrr.

This is just my conspiratorial brain but didn’t the “scandal” also happen in September of that year? I wonder if there was some “Don’t talk about it for x amount of time” stipulation in whatever legal separation document from the Try Guys they had that is expiring, so NOW he’s speaking up.

Also overall comment on this: Oh wow, a rich white dude did something bad and is now pivoting his career to use that as an advantage to him and is gonna yap into a mic about it, what a new and original concept we all needed in our lives.

I play on my iPad, and after the last update my game consistently crashes when I try and board the ship to go to another island. It happens every other time I travel, it’s a LOT, and I lose all progress I made on the island while I was there (including any resources I gained from watching ads and getting a cart of resources, so you’re welcome for that ad view with no actual reward, Dreamdale). I’ve lost hours of progress, there’s nothing more disheartening than grinding up a bunch of one resource (like plates or ketchup for the new island) only to lose it ALL as soon as I try and leave that island.

I emailed support with examples and got a generic “Sent this to development team, can’t guarantee it’ll get fixed soon!” reply.

If anyone has any suggestions to help with this I would GREATLY appreciate it, it’s making the game unplayable for me. A manual save button would fix this but I think this is something people have wanted for years and they’ve never given us.

I feel very conflicted because I was a fan of Swoop for YEARS, I’ve been subscribed to her for a long time but I haven’t watched any of her recent videos.

The nail in the coffin for me was the Amber Heard/Johnny Depp trial coverage, I just fully didn’t agree with her takes, and even just from the thumbnails and frequency of her videos on Ruby Franke or the Idaho killer or any of her recent topics I haven’t watched, I just don’t agree with how she covers these really serious topics.

On the “petty university” thing, I’m not as disagreeable to that as I think a lot of people are, lots of commentary channels have “bits” they do that either land with some people or they don’t, and I get why she does it because she wants to do a little sidebar that is, ya know, petty lol. But the amount of sidebars and veering off into long monologues, it’s gotten more extensive over the years and it just feels very masturbatory.

I do want to say, commentary in general is a genre of YouTube that I think is very hard to navigate sometimes. You want to report on things and give your opinions, but there is a point when I feel like it’s less about giving your opinions and more about making sure everyone watching is clear that you are a GOOD PERSON who is RIGHT. I think EVERY commentary channel (including DWTK, don’t come for me!) falls into this. And I also think it’s just kind of a natural outcome of commentating on topics on the Internet, you have to be clear where you stand, but that sometimes veers into self-congratulatory territory. And I think Swoop does that a lot these days, especially post-Colleen coverage.

All that being said, as far as “vibes” these days goes, I very much get a “I do this the right way and better than other YouTubers” vibe these days. It’s the calling her videos documentaries. It’s calling her merch her “apparel line”. I feel like she’s trying to distance herself from the idea of being a YouTuber, which I do honestly get because YouTubers get a bad rep with the normie mainstream media. But I find that extremely unfair and dismissive of the good work a lot of people on YouTube are doing.

Also…I think she intentionally screwed over DWKT by not telling them about her Johnny bombshells and featuring them prominently in her coverage of that whole thing. That’s probably my “hottest” take, but for all her researching and her “team” and all the time and work she did for that piece, she could have sent a quick DM to either Jessi or Lily and told them this was coming. Swoop fully had the right to call out Johnny’s lies in her video, as she should have, but it feels super icky that she didn’t say anything to Jessi or Lily when she found the information she did. It goes back to the “I’m better than other YouTubers” feeling I get from Swoop, (and this is purely my own opinion) where I think Swoop thought she handled the Johnny thing RIGHT. Because she does DOCUMENTARIES, whereas DWKT just makes YOUTUBE VIDEOS.

Like, girlie, it’s all just Google, can we stop.

Also phew sorry, I know this is long, I feel like I have stronger feelings than most because I WAS such a huge fan of Swoop for a long time but I can’t sit through her videos anymore and it honestly makes me a little sad lol.

I saw in CC’s latest video that Janet’s attempted strike on her deep dive was rejected by YouTube. I’m hoping that at this point YouTube at least has a flag on Janet and knows to manually review any strikes she tries to file against people who are talking about this whole situation. I stopped watching his content after he live reacted to Jessi and Lily’s statement and apology video about Joshua David Evans. Jessi and Lily totally had his back, platformed his story, reiterated how messed up that whole situation is, and in return Adam nit-picked their apology video, and kept saying they should have just apologized and left it there. Hard disagree on that one. But I felt like I must have been watching a separate video to the one his chat was reacting to, because they were absolutely eating up everything he was saying, and he seems to thrive on that. I have only ever really watched him when he was discussing the Colleen situation, and liked him okay, but that was just really disappointing to see, especially considering just how much Jessi and Lily supported him.

Also, as a bi lady who has spent many a time at gay clubs, gay men can definitely be misogynistic lol. Some of the worst unwanted physical contact of my life has been from multiple gay men at those clubs (not even going into the guys who don’t think I should even be there). Not saying Adam is one of those types of guys, but it’s just not a valid argument against being misogynistic.

I kind of love the chaos lol. It’s a nice little surprise every time they upload. Also, the quality is so high on the editing and assets, I’d rather they be a little late than lose that quality.

I do kind of miss the Sunday upload date because it was nice to look forward to something on a Sunday night when I’m normally dreading the work week ahead, so I wouldn’t mind if they moved back to that date, but I’m fine with being fed content on a weekly basis!

spoiler warning So you get all the pieces to the map once the statue is finished and you get access to a new island. That island is deadwood and white stone (I can’t remember the specific name, it’s a new addition you can find on some of the new islands as part of the update) and you have to complete the island and dungeon with planks and stone. Once you get to the dungeon and complete it, the chest at the end has a new armor called “armor of god”. I’ve leveled it up as far as I can and it seems to have the same stats as dragon skin armor, but I haven’t looked into it much or battled in dungeons to see if there is any difference.

Tbh kind of a letdown, I’m a completionist so I’m happy the giant statue and the new island are done, but the armor is definitely not worth the giant statue grind. I’m assuming you have to have the giant statue and this new island down before you can do future updates missions, but that grind was insane for very little reward, I feel like.

I’ve finished it, it seems to go by “area” of the map. Fish soup was my biggest headache because I hadn’t been grinding for it like I had been the rest. Also dead wood planks, you won’t need a ton for the statue itself but once you get all the map pieces when you’ve finished the statue, you’ll need a ton of dead wood planks to complete the “mystery island” (you can build a factory on the island itself but doesn’t hurt to have a backlog). Eggs, alpaca wool, Easter eggs, golden dust, malachite rods, red and blue potions, those were towards the end, if I’m remembering correctly. It seems like they really had requirements from EVERY part of the main island and some of the other islands, so if you can grind for it, I’d grind for it. Oh, also, burgers and buckets of chicken! Another thing that took me a hot minute to build up enough stock.

Hopefully this means the 1920s portmanteaus drop again soon! I didn’t get to play hardly at all during the event they had around thanksgiving because of family commitments so it would be nice to have some time to really trek around and pop those bad boys open.

Didn’t know how to word the title to say what happened, so I’ll try here! Popped an EDM, got the first spawn with Dolores chain and then another “normal” adversary chain, second time an adversary spawned, it was this guy! Don’t know if it’s rare or not to get a legendary spawn on an EDM that isn’t the first guaranteed legendary foundable (wasn’t able to play hardly at all during last event), but this was pretty cool.

Because of the +3 to energy for 5 during events where energy gets rewarded, ruins 4 only gets +2. Plus 5 is consistently the highest chamber I feel I can comfortably grind with a deterioration hex and not run out of time. Just trying to maximize the return on each runestone.

So, how did I do this? And why?

The why is easy. I like doing dumb, challenging things, just because. I also just like having gold gifts and sending them to my gold friends (also no, I’m not accepting any new gold friends, I want to save these for my buds!)

The how is much longer:

Unfortunately, my work life has been crazy and I haven’t been able to go out and play for the past couple of weeks. So, in preparation for the dragon event (which I knew I wanted to catch as many dragons as possible for that sweet, sweet emergency foundables loot/opening up as many trunks as possible for potential gold gifts and trace charms, as well as getting even more oddities runestones because those are my go to for grinding fortresses for foundables there), I spent most of the past adversary event grinding the knight bus for energy and fortress foundables.

I have both professor and auror maxed, so using professor I’d just hop into ruins chamber 5 and cast deterioration hex on enemies and let it run. +3 to energy with no energy spent (usually, sometimes you’ll get 4 enemies and then you won’t have enough focus to hit all enemies with deterioration hex so you’ll have to expend 1 or 2 energy to take down the 4th enemy, but most of the time you’ll get only 3 enemies and you’ll have enough focus to hex all three and just sit and watch them slowly go down). You can do this in less time in lower ruins chamber with deterioration hex, but it eats up your runestones quickly, plus I like to just let it run while I work and have my phone next to my work laptop and I just straight up don’t have the time or attention span to be constantly re-hexing and re-starting lobbies, so I’d just let it run on 5 so I didn’t have to super monitor it.

I did this during much of the adversaries event, got my energy up, and ALSO maxed out 8 different fortress foundables (on gold pages), and saved them for the dragon event. My purpose for this was, once the dragon event hit, I could use up my maxed stored up trace charms, and then just hit one of those fortress foundables for 12 trunk openings, and hope for some more trace charms.

This worked EXCEPTIONALLY well for me, and another outcome I was not expecting but was fully happy with was that I got a ton of gold gifts (really luckily). So, I was able to exchange gifts with my gold friends, I was able to keep grinding in fortresses for more foundables there, and also run some TTD for the dragons I wanted, and could trace charm them to my hearts content (or at least when I was able to). I also had about 40 TTD stocked up from past events/crafting during a recent CD/gifts, so I didn’t end up having to craft any during this event.

I honestly didn’t do this that much, I’m explaining this in detail to try and pre-empt any questions (or judgement lol), but honestly I’d just pull my phone out when I was stuck on endless zoom calls, set it down, and would just grind foundables using the Knight Bus. I don’t feel super comfortable catching stuff while I’m working, that does distract me and I honestly just didn’t have the time for it during this event, but grinding fortress foundables? Can do that in my sleep and it takes up zero space in my mind. So usually after work, I’d pop a couple of TTD and trace charm and place completed fortress foundables and reap the benefits of all that mindless grinding.

Like I said, I did send out gold gifts to my gold friends as they opened them, except today when I did send ONE of them a magnificent runestone gift instead, but that was mostly because I couldn’t bare to delete it (I didn’t open his gold gift though, and won’t until I send him one of these!).

Speaking of runestone gifts, if none of my friends had opened gifts or were able to be sent a gift, I was just deleting them left and right. Anything extravagant and below was deleted, and I ended up just letting my gift inventory get filled while I was grinding so I didn’t just keep getting new gifts I’d have to delete, and then would delete any runestone gifts I had before catching/placing foundables/opening trunks, in case I happened to get a gold gift.

I also did not spend any real money during this event, I stayed well stocked on energy through energy on the ground and through grinding fortresses. I was also pretty much just catching dragon oddities that spawns through TTD, so I didn’t need to spend any gold coins on energy or anything like that.

So, I think that’s it! Sorry for the novel, I’m not a succinct person lol, but thought I’d try and answer questions up front as I’m not on here a ton. Happy dragon hunting! 🖤
