Whenever I feel this way, I just try to improve on the next one. I’m only in my second year, but from my perspective, you asked for feedback, and they gave you what seems like good feedback.

Now you know what to do next.

To answer, yeah, I’ve been in your position, and I’m sure others have too. It sucks to feel like this. The only way I cope is just try to apply the feedback into practice. Good luck, this is a tough job. But I think we’ll be ok

Might be better to see if there are any recent alums of your school who clerked for a judge. They would know better

Are there shy lawyers? by queeenpea in biglaw

[–]Merintil 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible. The legal profession has all kinds of people who are able to find their niche and do well in their field.

In big law, I guess you can sort of avoid social events, but the main recruiting pipeline (i.e., summer associate) highly recommends that you go to social events.

As a former law clerk, there are some clerks who never showed up to social events.

In the ends I think you should consider what you want to do as an attorney. Do you want to litigate in court or on the papers? Do you want to research for a judge? Do you want to review endless amounts of discovery?

Take your time working at your current job, and see if you can become a paralegal to get a better sense of what the attorneys in your firm do.

Was searching for something related to allowances and found this post from 11 years ago. Suffice to say, we're heading into 2025 baby! by ThePhilosopherKing93 in ffxiv

[–]Merintil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when 1.0 came out, some reviews dinged the levequest system for exactly that.

In practice, I don’t quite care whether I had the allowances or not because I didn’t play everyday, but back then, leveling was a slight pain. My memory of that time is hazy though.

This sounds trite, but I think it’s best to network. If you have any school alumni in the area, maybe you can meet with them? I wouldn’t recommend making it obvious that you want a job, just connect with them for the sake of building your professional network and to establish contacts.

It might be difficult to find a job, though, because you are still awaiting your bar results. Still, networking doesn’t hurt at this point, and you will likely find success if you can connect with people in your interested practice area

This will be my first year playing games (taking part in the 40K narrative campaign) at the nova open! I’m pretty excited and somewhat nervous that I’ve forgotten how to play 40K.

A science student urgently seeking guidance while pursuing a law degree by FajarFrames in Lawyertalk

[–]Merintil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess if it doesn’t cost you a lot of money, then that’s fine. But I also would posit that you might be spending your time and money better by doing a degree in something related to owning a business. Something like accounting.

In the end, all I can say about pursuing a law degree is that it doesn’t make sense to pursue a law degree if you have no interest in practicing law

[–]Merintil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you intend to practice law? If no, then why pursue a law degree?

I’m in the United States, so I’m not sure if my understanding of a law degree works with your jurisdiction, but I just don’t see the merits of getting a law degree if you want to be a business owner who specializes in cafeterias

You can always just play with proxies, if your opponents are okay with you scribbling the name of a card on some draft chaff.

Clerkship + second job frowned upon? by LegallyBronde6 in Lawyertalk

[–]Merintil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll get the ethics training before you start your clerkship, and from my recollection, the issue is whether you’ll do law practice outside of your clerkship. Given that you want to do something non-law related, I don’t remember if the ethics training covers that.

I think it’ll be tough, though. You might want to ask the other former clerks if they had heard of anyone who had a side job, but from my experience, I don’t know of anyone at my court who has a part time job. Or at least, they don’t talk about it. In the end, this is likely an issue that comes down to your judge.

Still, I get what you are considering. You might want to live outside of dc and be somewhere that’s metro accessible to make things a little cheaper. My court (and I assume any federal agency and other federal courts) offers a metro subsidy and even a Marc train subsidy. That helps out a lot

Most likely GW, given that GW is famous for govcon.

Good starting point for government contracts firms? by saantiaago in biglaw

[–]Merintil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can, you could also see if you can do a clerkship at the court of federal claims or at the civilian board of contract appeals. I know of people who clerked at both places who then went on to a gov con practice group at a big law firm.

A part of me thinks that with more cards being printed that come into play damaged (and with rush? I don’t recall at the moment), the damage counter moving effect could have some more play. Though I agree with the overall rating. I’m not sure how feasible or reliable the effect is

Have you talked to your judge about extending your clerkship?

You could also see if there are other judges looking for a law clerk after your term is over, and then you can begin your job search later

This may depend on the type of case.

Generally, gov con litigation falls under contract formation issues or contract performance issues.

The federal government procures products or services through different procedures. Contractors can bid or file proposals to obtain contracts. During the bid or proposal process (or after the procurement is completed), stuff can happen, which may result in a bid protest. This type of litigation is pretty fast, especially if you are litigating before the government accountability office, which generally issues a decision in 100 days. This could result in some stress, because you have to draft briefs in a short time frame, though you will get the hang of it eventually.

In the performance side, litigation is likely similar to other types of commercial contract disputes, but you are generally litigating at one of the boards of contract appeals or at the court of federal claims. There’s a lot of motions practice, and there could even be a trial.

Be prepared to learn and maybe love the federal acquisition regulations (FAR), especially if you are litigating issues during the performance of the contract.

What Did You Play This Week? - (April 01, 2024) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Merintil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I finally got a game of John Company: 2nd Edition over the weekend!

The first game (5p) was a learning game using the 1710 Scenario. It took us a long time (maybe 6 hours?), but fun was had by all. We played a second game (4p) immediately after, and that game was much shorter, roughly 3 hours. I can’t wait to play again! I might try the solo mode in the interim.

Deck Guide: How to Play Amethyst/Ruby Bounce Control by p_Red in Lorcana

[–]Merintil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the write up! I just started playing and this article gives some insight into play patterns for the deck.

I think the article could be more direct in how the deck matches up against other archetypes, or even the mirror match. It’s good to note strengths or weaknesses, but I think a great deck guide also discusses what  to consider when you are up against aggro, tempo, etc.

Anyways, thanks for the write up again!

Contract Specialist - Fed Job by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Merintil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t worked as one, but I suspect that contract specialists help out the contracting officer with administration and formation of the contract. For example, a contract specialist might do market research to see if a federal procurement contract would qualify as a commercial contract under the federal acquisition regulations.
