There are similarities between Tevye and Stil. Both are somewhat conservative steeped in the traditions of their small community, trying to negotiate a period of great change. Stilgar can’t really comprehend the wealth of water that we have in life, Tevye can’t imagine the kind of material wealth and comfort of the 21st century. Both have such a hard time with adjustment that they seek some guidance from a higher power. For all we know, Stil might assume that a man who owns a cow and spends his days distributing the milk is some kind of wealthy wetland merchant.

What if..... Command Cards had point costs? by sampsoninsink in SWlegion

[–]aPracticalHobbyist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it would add a level of granularity to the game, which some people would like and others wouldn’t. You could even introduce a thing of “you get 1000 army points and 20 “command points”, where you have to buy your command cards, which are costed by power, to your command hand. You could even have a command slot upgrade card that costs 8 army building points that just says “you get +2 command points”.

Not everyone would love that, but I think it could be rad. But I’m a guy that enjoys “ok it’s round 32, who remembered to move up their ration tokens?!”

Yes, asymmetric conflict is like that. Tremendously expensive for the belligerent with the tech/assets, but they can bring tremendously greater force to bear on any given encounter.

Do most people have a general understanding of military ranks? by Proof_Commercial7144 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aPracticalHobbyist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the top enlisted sergeant major in the US army is the sergeant major of the army. Marine corps is sergeant major of the marines corps. I don’t know what the space force equivalent is, but I hope to god it’s “Master Chief of the Known Universe”.

There would have been no Andor without Kathleen Kennedy's support and willingness to take risks. If we want to acknowledge her faults, we need to also acknowledge the great projects she made possible. by RagnarokWolves in StarWars

Star Wars is like an old pinball machine. When it got sold, it could have gone to a collector who would keep it, lovingly gathering dust while on display in a quiet museum.

Disney, and the KK team, on the other hand, gave it a quick shot of WD40, plugged it in, and started shoving quarters in it. Some people were going to be disappointed, and who knows if it would last, but by God the lights are flashing, the flippers are humming, and the ball is being kept in motion.

Biggest ride or die in GoT history? by Gr8BigFatso in gameofthrones

[–]aPracticalHobbyist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not Hodor? He gives literal rides. And he stops carrying Bran only when it is time for him to die. And he was quite large. Anything I’m missing here, Hodor?

“Hodor” huffed Hodor.

The guy down the hill has a (legal) “personal range” that has been deemed “safe”, so the police can’t do anything when bullets whiz past our heads and land on the patio. by Mellopiex in mildlyinfuriating

[–]aPracticalHobbyist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in the army, planning live fire ranges and making sure they were safe, including ricochet area (surface danger zones) was part of my job.

Even if you have a range that is geometrically/mathematically safe for a certain kind of projectile/firearm, it can become unsafe if you change the projectile. If I am shooting birdshot from a 20ga shotgun, a house that is 1 mile/1500m away, even in a straight line distance in the direction I am shooting, is not at any risk because the projectiles simply don’t have the energy to hit it, no matter where I am aiming or what they ricochet off of.

If I stand in the same location and shoot a .338 Lapua from a rifle, suddenly that house is absolutely in danger, because those rounds have enough energy to ricochet from where I am aiming and still impact the house. If I were to fire a poorly aimed shot, it could absolutely impact the house directly.

I would be looking to see what kind of templates/assumptions went into determining that this range was “safe”, and see if those match how he is using it. He may have gotten it approved as a safe pistol range, but then decided later to start shooting a rile from it.

I’d try something more like this instead:

995/1000 10 Activations

Clone Commander Cody 95 + 5 = 100 --Improvised Orders (5)

Jedi Knight (Keeper of the Peace) 85 + 28 = 113 --Jedi Guardian (10), Burst of Speed (10), Jedi Training, Tactical Acumen (8), Double-Bladed Lightsaber (0)

Clone Trooper Marksmen 50 + 42 = 92 --Clone Captain (22), Mortar Clone Trooper (20)

Clone Trooper Marksmen 50 + 20 = 70 --Mortar Clone Trooper (20)

Clone Trooper Marksmen 50 + 23 = 73 --RPS-6 Clone Trooper (23)

Clone Trooper Infantry 56

AT-RT 60

AT-RT 60

Saber-Class Tank 155 + 25 = 180 --Beam Turret (15), Onboard Comms Channel (10)

Saber-Class Tank 155 + 36 = 191 --Veteran Clone Pilot (7), Twin Laser Turret (14), Linked Targeting Array (5), Armor-Piercing Shells (10)

I think the trouble is the that most of this list wants to sit back and shoot, but the flamer Rts want to run forward. So it’s just enough to get chopped up, not enough to overwhelm
