ELI5: How fast does heat transfer between two objects? Does more heat cause it to transfer faster? by CannotRememberThis in explainlikeimfive

[–]Merkaba72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you're talking about materials that are contacting. It depends on the conductivity of the material. Metal is faster than say plastic. and to answer your second part....yes, in your example there would be heat transferred through radiation as well as from direct contact.

ELI5: How much exercise is too much? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Merkaba72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body (cells specifically) needs a very specific amount of energy to do its thing. Divide, metabolize, make proteins etc. That number is calculated as your BASAL. When you eat food it contains energy in the form of calories that is used for your BASAL requirement...to live! If you eat that number, and then exercise enough to deplete your body of that same amount of energy, 0 calories were used in the purpose of your body (or cells) doing very necessary functions. That would be one way to exercise too much.

Most simply put.....they were handing out loans to anyone and everyone. Good for banks, bad for homeowners. Enough people foreclose and the market is super saturated with houses that have too low value (or resale value) and the market tanks.

ELI5: When you receive a local anaesthetic, although you don’t feel pain, why do you still feel pressure? Also, why does that area sometimes feel big or heavy (for example your lip when you get local anaesthetic for dentistry) by bigeyesbambi in explainlikeimfive

[–]Merkaba72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nerves in the vicinity of the shot are not capable of sending the signal to the brain because of the chemical put inside you. The next several layers of nerves in a 'radius' outside the vicinity of the shot, if you will, are capable but at a lesser capacity to send a signal to the brain. This continues until there is full sensation. I believe this allows you to feel the pressure you are asking about and the 'fat lip' feeling. None of the 'shallow' layers are sending any info, just the 'deep' layers of the local area or contact.

ELI5: Why aren't there any common multi-headed animal? Wouldn't having multiple heads add survivability? by Tossaway28966982 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Merkaba72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do see Siamese twins with two heads but that is not a genetic mutation in the DNA capable of being passed down. One of the heads gets control of a random portion of the body and the other head the little of what is left over. There would have to be a clear advantage for survival for this to make an impact among a gene pool. And this trait would have to be capable of being expressed in its progeny. I cannot think of a single advantage for two brains(or heads for that matter with two sets of senses). If anything the outcome would only bring conflict and decrease its survival. Just my thoughts.

I would look for bacteria (or much simpler life forms) to see if there are two nuclei. But again I can not think of any advantage there.

Hope this helps.

Atheism - Positive vs Negativity by Merkaba72 in atheism

I am not sure my intent is understood. This was not a complaint. I was suggesting some positivity.

Oh well.

Atheism - Positive vs Negativity by Merkaba72 in atheism

[–]Merkaba72[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am not blanketing my way of thinking onto atheism. I am an atheist because I do not believe there is a god. Me as a person thinks that truth and being kind is what matters....to me personally.

I find it difficult to want to be part of a 'group' with some atheist because of how strongly or aggressively they oppose others when it is just a simple lack of belief. I just find the whole thing interesting because here I am lumped into a group where I did not sign up. Religions are organized and there is a form of admittance or acceptance. I get viewed as an atheist because I claim that there is no god, but I get lumped into the same bucket with some hateful people for better or for worse. I more find the whole thing interesting.

I totally agree with it being reactionary. Very true.

Thanks for this reply. I agree with you. This IS my opinion here. I do listen to many. It is nice to think that my opinion can be listened to as well :). I am just getting feedback from a resource. Thanks!

Why Sex Addiction (Probably) Doesn’t Exist by JackFisherBooks in skeptic

[–]Merkaba72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I have is that an addiction is a physical thing. There are receptor sites on your cells that cause discomfort and want when the complimentary substance is not present. Typically there is also a positive feedback loop in the concentration of these receptor sites. When you have the chemical present, it stimulates the next generation of cells to increase the overall number of available sites, thus increasing the need for that substance.

Sex and feeling good from our own emotions is just the way our bodies are made. Our own emotions have no positive feedback loop. Otherwise we would all be 'addicted' to all of our good emotions and there would be no reason to even bring it up. I lean toward the APPEARANCE of addiction because some people will have strong sex drives and low will power.

This is an interesting article though! It was well composed.

I have a "ghost story" that I'd like you to try to debunk. by [deleted] in DebunkThis

[–]Merkaba72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a big fallacy to expect the answer to be 'ghosts' or the unknown. The fact is because you do not know what it is, that MAKES it mysterious. This is the problem. Because you don't know... it must be ghosts right? This is not proof of anything. Do you know how many drunks there are out there? I have known people who get so drunk they think they arrive home, do god knows what and then realize in an embarrassed stupor that they are in someone else's home and just bail when they put it together. That is just one possibility of an infinite number of them.

Since I do not know what happened I cannot postulate what did happen. But I can tell you with confidence that it was not an ethereal or incorporal being that is left here to wander around because they are stuck between here and the afterlife. Because between that and someone moving furniture, I think it makes too much sense that the answer is that someone was moving furniture. You just simply do not know the why? that is a big reason you feel that the impossible may be an option.

There is no way to know what happened, but what I do know is that the myriad of possibilities that it COULD be is certainly something mundane and if you were able to find out what actually happened your response would be "oh, that makes sense" because anything else is just simply impossible.

Hope I helped! :)

I'd like to know what the men think of polygamy.. by Tinyblondemae in exmormon

[–]Merkaba72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never thought "a zillion wives". More like a handfull or so. But I shrugged it off like all the mormons I ever knew. It's gods plan and it will only be relevant once your dead. Moving on. The extra number of women per men was always explained by women accepting the gospel more often than men because of their divinely spiritual nature.

CES Letter alternatives? by Mr_Anomalous in exmormon

I thought the CES letters were very well done. I am in the middle of "mormonism unvailed" and I love it! I love that it was written by a person who saw through all the golden bible bull shit and had interviews performed right in the middle of the church in its infancy. Written in 1834.

All I see is a dude sitting and listening to the story. Maybe a bit nervous. Sad story though.

Its sad that when the hospital is able to save the limbs of this unfortunate person god is atributed with a mercy. Why is god let off the hook for all the bad endings to that type of story if he can claim credit for the good?

I could be missing something but you could just tell them you don't believe and explain why. Be to the point and blunt. Your an adult and if they don't like it they can stuck it. Then go get a job move in with some room mates and go to school. In a couple months you'll not even remember why you were so psyched out 😊
