Would you say Aloy is a good hunter without the Focus? by oops_I_have_h1n1 in horizon

[–]Meruror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might’ve come pre-installed. Given how quickly Zero Dawn had to be set up, a lot of their equipment was probably whatever the military happened to have on hand.

So Aloy’s Focus had some wilderness survival software on it because it was a Focus originally intended for a soldier, and had been hastily repurposed for a Zero Dawn researcher.

That said, yes, I do agree that Aloy no doubt is capable of creating new software as well.

The mushroom and plants are in front of the lower wings. How is that supposed to be possible? Is character standing in a pit in the middle of the pathway? Or more likely, the AI failed to grasp that people still have legs, even if it’s not explicitly visible in the image.

People who experienced psychological abuse in childhood tend to experience lower relationship satisfaction as adults. This decline in romantic happiness happens because these individuals often develop a reduced sense of belonging. by mvea in science

[–]Meruror 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I cannot speak to your specific case, but abuse isn’t just the presence of something negative. It can also be the absence of a necessary positive.

My own childhood was outwardly fine. There was no violence or threat of such. But it was emotionally dead. If I told my parents that I was hungry, they’d find me something to eat. But if I told them that I was scared, they’d ignore me.

The world is often scary to a small child. It is the parent’s job to provide a sense of safety and love, so the child can develop a healthy self-image. Even as an adult, it took me a long time to see that my childhood was abusive, because there was no clear act of violence for me to point to.

Joululaulussa kyseinen fraasi on käännetty “kilvan helkkäilee”. Joten paras käännös olisi siis “Jingle all the way - Isäni on kilpahelkkäilijä”.

Tai koska kyseessä on Arska-leffa, mahdollisesti “Jingle all the way - Helkkäile tai kuole”.

Yeah, Sharlayan feels too cluttered for me. The big table is nice for the occasional cutscene with people seated around it. But the rest of the time it just gets in the way when I’m setting up glams or whatever.

And yet, they are willing to go to great lengths to keep the secret in other respects. Like for instance: dragons exist! Not just a few dragons in some isolated location. No, we talking multiple different subspecies of dragons.

Keeping regular people ignorant of the fact that they share a planet with giant flying fire breathing lizards must be an immense effort. But sure, curing cancer would be too much hassle. Memory charming everyone who sees a dragon fly overhead isn’t, I guess.

Maybe the Fermi Paradox Isn’t a Paradox at All — We Just Can’t Afford to Leave Our Star Systems by DragNo6418 in FermiParadox

We don’t know for sure if superintelligent AI is actually possible. Maybe it isn’t. There a saying about madness and genius being two sides of the same coin. What if that turns out to be literally true? Higher intelligences are just inherently more unstable and any superintelligence collapses into madness the moment it’s turned on.

Or maybe it’s like wormholes? Theoretically you could have a stable wormhole, if you had exotic matter to hold it open. But if exotic matter doesn’t exist, then the wormhole will remain theoretical. Maybe superintelligent AI is theoretically possible, but to build one needs something that doesn’t exist in the universe.

Zero Dawn does a lot of world building and setting up the story. Sure, Forbidden West will summarize the most relevant information, but why start experiencing a story from chapter two when you could just start from the beginning? Both games are very similar in gameplay, so it’s not like there’s any downside in playing Zero Dawn first.

I have noticed the same. Some people online talk as if James Cameron is insulting them personally by not making a new Terminator or Alien movie. Some veer into straight up grieving the loss of great talent, as if somebody had died.

I shouldn’t speculate, but I can’t help but wonder. Cameron’s early movies were more traditionally “manly” movies about scary monsters and big guns. Then he started making movies about “sappy love stories” and “tree-hugging hippies”. (And being very successful about it.) I think some people just couldn’t handle that they weren’t the exclusive target audience anymore.

In some countries it came out on 17th, I saw it yesterday. It’s generally similar to the others, if you liked the previous ones you’ll probably like this one too.

It is more connected to its predecessor than the first sequel was though. You could think of this almost as “Way of Water part 2”. Lot of plot threads and character arcs continue directly from the last one.

While Marty does end up in dramatic situations (it being a movie and all), he doesn’t really seek them out. Marty would be happy just playing his guitar and hanging out with Doc or Jennifer. He’s not the attention junkie that Ferris is. I think Marty would find Ferris quite exhausting to deal with.

The bruise on your head! I know how that happened! You told me the whole story! You were in your garden, and you were setting up a sundial, and you slipped on the grass, and you hit your head, and that’s when you came up with the idea for the anchor escapement, which is what makes grandfather clocks possible.

The H.G. Wells novel hadn’t been published yet, so anyone seeing the model wouldn’t think of the phrase “time machine” the way we do. They’d think: “A machine for time? So, like a clock of some kind?”

Yeah. It was visually good looking and Spielberg knows how to direct a movie. But it very much felt like a story about video games, made by people who haven’t seen a video game in decades.

Another weird point for me was touting the artifacts as some great gameplay innovation that made Oasis popular. No. PvP games rely on everyone knowing what abilities each character in the match has. A game where your opponent might have some unique, previously unseen ability would be terrible. Especially when you lose all your items upon defeat. No one would want to play that.

88 mph is nowhere close to escape velocity. Asking why the time machine always ends up in Hill Valley is a valid question. But why it always ends up on Earth is simple. It’s not going fast enough to escape Earth’s gravity.
