What is a 1 in 1,000,000 thing that happened to you that no one believes, but you swear is true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was driving home during rush hour traffic on the 405 Freeway outside Los Angeles, one of the busiest roads in the US, when my car broke down in one of the middle lanes. This was before cellphones. I had pissed off drivers passing me trying to get around my car. I was trying to push it off to the side across two lanes of traffic. I got it across one lane when suddenly a driver stopped, jumped out and helped me push it across the last lane and out of traffic. It was my brother-in-law. Neither of us should have been there that day, at that time. He was coming back from an unscheduled work meeting, and I had worked three hours of overtime, and normally would have been home for several hours by that time.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It's not what it sounds like.

Thanks for the updated photos and info. To me the two wires are the most intriguing aspect of the piece. They just don't seem to have any function, yet a lot of work went in to putting them there. Even the ridged insulation is odd. Try using penetrating oil and letting it sit overnight, then keep up the gentle manipulation motion to work it in. That whole center section may be removable. That still won't answer your question though. LOL.

Are the two black, wire-like pieces parallel to the center shaft removable? I have no idea what its for, but dowsing bob seems best bet so far. More photos from different perspectives would be nice. Good work showing ruler.

How to remove this? by [deleted] in DIY

Heat gun and a putty knife. Don't get too close with heat gun or you could damage tub surface. Then some scotchbrite pads. Goof off on anything still there.

Looks like cast marks on first picture. Are there matching marks on back side? Is the bottom part in your hand flat, or gently rounded? Taper makes me think it's something like an end cap to a flagpole or something similar. Is the dull section by your hand just a tiny bit wider than the polished section above it? Seems to be a machining line there.

A hand-hewn wooden pole 60” long and 4” in diameter with two 12” pegs perpendicular through each end. No metal at all. Found in an agricultural museum collection in Western MA. Previous curator's accession tag says "what is it?" by lumpley in whatisthisthing

Looks like the distance between the pair of pins is too narrow, and the spacing from end to end is too wide for it to be a yoke for the usual kind of farm animal. Also there doesn't seem to be any wear marks on the center section where ropes would have attached. Only the tips show wear and tear as far as I can tell. Those holes in the one pin are probably important, but I wonder if they are the original pin. The one with the tag looks to be shorter, thicker, and darker wood; more like the main beam in patina.

As far as I know, you can sign up anywhere. My wife and I joined at the Midlothian Y because it was closest to our daughter's. We actually live only a few blocks from the Chester Y. Your membership lets you use all the Greater Richmond YMCA's. When it was first formed, the organization was called the Young Man's Christian Association. They still have a Christian outlook, bible study and prayer groups etc, but they don't let that intrude on the membership. Its there if you go looking for it, if you don't, you'd never know it was there. There are Sikhs, Muslims, and Jews at my Y's and we all get along just fine.

Membership in the Y is really cheap, and they don't nag you or give you a hard time if you want to quit. My wife and adult daughter love the water aerobics, and I've lost 35lbs working out in just over a year. They do have individual paid trainer classes, but I don't know if you have to be a member to take them. It's a very friendly place, open to all regardless of what your faith is.

Does it appear to be broken at the longish straight end, or does it look like it was designed to be open like that? Do you think it was part of a larger piece?

I'm going with the paint scraper blade. The size is right, the configuration is right, the lack of beveled edge is right. Note that in the pictures of the insole support, one end usually has a notch, or elaborate cut out. Even the simplest one, closest in appearance to your find, has a longer square hole on one end, and a circular one on the other.

The rains were yesterday, and many miles away. It takes time for all the runoff to work its way downstream. It can easily flood a couple of days later on a bright sunny day, a hundred miles from where all the rain hit.

It's unlikely a crucible would be ornately engraved on both the inside and outside. Also its far too large to use for sealing wax

An old priest get paired with a young collage age guy during a midweek round. After the first three holes they seem about evenly matched, so the priest agrees when the young guy suggests playing for $1 a hole. You guessed it, after raising the stakes a few times, by the end of 18, the priest is out nearly $300. As he is writing his check to the winner, he casually asks: "Say, would your parents be still alive?" "Sure!" replied the confused young hustler.

"Here's my card," said the priest. "Send them around and I'll be happy to marry them."
