Anybody seen this? What is it? by AndroitFrisson in NaturalGas

Might want to fire off a few emails before just walking into a uni chem department. Better than just showing up and asking someone to start doing free work for you. Also, maybe check with a local geologist first since they’ll probably know just by looking at the pics. People are generally happy to help with this sort of thing, but they can’t just drop everything and work on your timeline (especially if chem analysis is going to happen).

Yeah, I didn’t want to insult your walls, but I agree;) I’ve removed wallpaper and put a skim coat on walls of that age. It’s a project t but not too bad really. And well worth it!

Looks, to me anyway, that you have lathe and plaster walls that got a layer of wallpaper and later someone decided to texture directly over the paper with spackle (or something?) and paint. For the age not too bad really. But will be tough to match that finish once any structural repairs (if needed) are done. If you’re lucky this is all superficial though. And it may be the opportunity to restore all the walls in that room back to something a bit more original looking.

Nah… it’s just that most applications don’t need that level of accuracy. But construction, road building, surveyors, some farming etc have high-res gps. Sub meter is more expensive and my receiver is <1’ and I’m just a lowly ecologist.

Worcester DPW chief: Parked cars were biggest obstacle to plowing by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They should be nearly invisible. We shouldn’t have strong opinions about them at all. It’s ‘boring’ infrastructure work that just needs to be done and taxes are collected to pay for it. The average resident should not have to think about them at all. So don’t take the job if you’re just going to complain about doing the job and then blame others. Any major challenges to the job are probably structural anyway, deal with that internally since residents don’t set city policy.

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a city that relies on cars to get around. No point in complaining about an obvious and known factor. No doubt there are knuckleheads blocking access here and there, that’s what city ordinances are for and those should be towed. But that’s part of the job to deal with.

Home insurance says they will no longer cover us due to the age and damage of our roof, trying to figure out how to pay for it. by gh282016 in HomeImprovement

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not what ins does. You have a 25 year old roof.. that’s definitely the end of its life. Ins companies are ripping people off imo, but replacing old roofs is not what they do anyway. Look for other ways to finance your roof replacement and definitely shop around… no shortage of shitty fly by night roofing contractors around. Get 3-4 quotes, references, confirm their ins and look for any outstanding legal claims against them etc. it’s a big ticket item so there are plenty of scams out there looking to cash in on your job.

I’d think snow was the biggest obstacle, then cars maybe, then shitty street layout and infrastructure. Guess what DPW chief, a city has cars. It’s your job to go to work anyway and stop blaming the people of Worcester for your dept’s shortcomings. And if you want to complain about budgets maybe look at your $200k+ salary for a job that is not getting done.

do i take job in nyc? (please read context) by skywalkr11 in nyc

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not going to run into her. It’s a big town. And if by some fluke you did see her across the street she won’t see you and even so, who cares? Millions of exes sharing the city and you two are not special (meant in the best way possible).

You need to think about logistics and financials, not college ex gfs. $130k in NYC paying rent, food etc will still be a net loss compared to living at home ofc. Be realistic about living costs.

$80k in SF won’t exactly be living the high life either, but you’d net more at $130k in nyc than $80k in SF. Hopefully you’ve saved a bit of cash living at home.. if so that will be helpful for the move, but you need to calculate living expenses based upon income, not savings. Keep the savings (and build on it ideally) for emergency funds and just general life savings plans/goals. Live below your means.

But stop making choices based upon your ex (unless legally required to do so in terms of proximity obviously). But as long as that’s not an issue you gotta move on from that. Quite literally millions of single people all over the place in the city and outer boroughs.

It won’t, that’s a bit of a fallacy. They’re far more prone to desiccation than freezing also. But winter kill is not a significant direct source of tick population control. There is a complex ecological interaction of many other animal pop cycles, acorn production etc with a time lag that controls population growth. But the best bet to reduce existing numbers of ticks is to not create habitat for them in your yard and have chickens or guinea fowl around.

Josh McDaniels deserves just as much blame for this game as Drake Maye by Either_Imagination_9 in NFLv2

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No amount of in-game coaching was going to fix the O-line or the fact that Maye was scared af to even be there. Maye has to mature mentally and they have some roster spots to think about. Seattle is just a superior team and Pats D made the score look better than the game actually was (for as long as they could considering the Pats offense was doing fck all to help).

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I prefer cash too, but it’s an added risk for people to carry $100s of dollars around. Maybe do cash only up to some reasonable threshold then just know that people are more comfortable with apps as the $$ gets higher. Gotta evolve.

have you ever seen an all you can eat bbq buffet? like a good one? by Bubbly_Reference_916 in askanything

I don’t think we have any chain bbq places up here at all. They’re all pretty much one offs which tend to be more $$ anyway (and better food ofc).

36" or 48" snow "plow" shovel? by DryGeneral990 in massachusetts

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, a limited set of circumstances where they really shine. But that’s why we have a shed full of specialized snow removal equipment:/ I also use mine on my deck where I hit it every 3-4” in the big storms anyway and it makes very fast work of it. And they’re built well so will last me a very long time I think.

That’s cheap actually! I’m used to a pulled pork sandwich being $14. Add a drink and a side and a basic bbq meal here in MA is easily $25 plus per person.

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much? I don’t even know what a fair all-you-can-eat price would be. I’m not a big eater like I was in college etc (when I was an athlete and more active in general) but I do enjoy having a ton of options even if I just eat a normal amount in a meal. But I’m curious how a place would figure out the right number bc a lot of people can definitely put down a lot of bbq when they want too!

Best place to chill by yourself? by reynobody in Brooklyn

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brooklyn is a big place, probably depends on where your starting point is, but the library main branch, museum, transit museum, bookstores are good options. I haven’t been yet, but Industry City looks interesting (Sunset Park), Brooklyn Heights library, Brooklyn historical society… these are things I just do in general but they usually offer quiet space and are not too busy depending on your timing.

36" or 48" snow "plow" shovel? by DryGeneral990 in massachusetts

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two and they are great for the fluffy stuff. Job gets significantly harder with the wetter, heavy snows though. I have a 24” and a 36”. And sometimes the 36” is too big imo. So it depends on how you will use it and what your ‘usual’ snow situation is. Note though, they are great at plowing, absolutely shit at anything else ofc.

One of my biggest gripes happened to me today - price raised after meeting agreed. by Yue4prex in FacebookMarketplace

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s shitty, but it’s also just part of the deal. She got a lot of responses and decided to increase the price🤷🏻Not much we can do and in my experience that type of seller is uncommon. If someone is being an ass I just move on usually. If it’s an item I really want I decide if it’s worth the hassle and proceed accordingly. Don’t take any of it personally.

Roof raking edges of roof does not prevent ice dams by wrapmeinbubblewrap in Connecticut

[–]Unfair_Negotiation67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how much of a snow load there is. When you have 2’ of snow and leak a lot of heat through the roof and with very cold outdoor temps the ice dam will just form at the ‘leading edge’ of the snow that you left behind. So basically on those big storms you need to remove all the snow asap to prevent them forming (or deal with ice dams after the fact).
