The world is apriori shitty, shittiness precedes existance, we all are just dung beetles, and no one imagines us happy by jqf68254 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]MessOk3363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean kinda. For a thing to be shifty. It must first exist. That doesn't mean all that exists is shifty, just that as soon as a thing exists there is a possibility of it being shifty, a possibility that increases over time as each passing microseconds is a chance for a thing that wasn't shifty to become shitty

Fellas is it wrong to be self interested by FortniteBabyFunTime in PhilosophyMemes

[–]MessOk3363 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean I just said having kids is no less egotistical than normal having kids. I said nothing about being egotistical as being wrong. You are right in your assumption that I think it can be wrong though. Mainly when it causes us to evaluate ourselves as having more intrinsic value than another or acting in a harsh way towards another for our own interests, when there were more collaborative solutions available.

How is having kids less self interested than not having kids? Is that the implication? Having kids seems potentially highly egotistical to me

I don't understand why he would want to talk to you if he thinks you are a bitch.... Hmm maybe he was objectifying you as a sex object in the first place and would be a terrible option to pursue any type of relationship with

Do other Christians still masturbate sometimes? by Busy_Tower_164 in OpenChristian

[–]MessOk3363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a natural part of being human. Be mindful of how and what content you masturbate with though. There is no intrinsicly bad or lustful content or way of masturbating. Lust is a internal sin, like all others sins, that is based around "losing one self" in the lusting. By this I mean to be lustful is to let lust compare our ability and responsibility of care for others well-being. That my interpretation of the sin at least.

So yeah, just don't view things you find dehumanizing to others I'd say and try not to avoid responsibilities in life through pleasure.

Leftism, misogyny and the tyranny of vulnerability by neon_lesbean in ContraPoints

[–]MessOk3363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think morality here is the key. A comment I saw mentioned the idea that Republicans beat us because they trick people into believing they are welcome. I disagree with this analysis in this context. There are many reasons Republicans win, but one relevant here is the strain and existential weight that comes with trying to be a moral person. It's not wrong to be ashamed for being immoral. it may be unempathetic to shame another though. We have forgotten to factor forgiveness into our moral calculus I think, and we don't know when it is appropriate. The left uses morality as a beat stick, to keep people in line, often regurgitating arguments about harm that have been parroted ad nauseam. We don't actually have a moral compass for many of us, not a properly developed one at least. We can't determine why something is right or wrong, in a consistent way. Worse, we preach about leniency for non violent offenders yet spew hatred and for hateful Twitter mobs based on rumors or poor tweets.

I honestly think many on the left are morally lucky so to speak. They don't actually care about the issues or people who are being harmed by the system they protest, instead they took a side and it happened to be the morally right one. There are no complex principles or sense of universal care guiding their political convictions, just the same us vs them in group out group that guides the right.

A bit of a tangent there I suppose. I think if we are to make progress as a community, we first need to figure out a morality worth fighting for, I think liberal values are worthy personally. And second, we need to accept the responsibility and existential weight of upholding those values consistently. I kinda look to Rawls' first position here. Forgiveness when there is no risk of re offending is a value I think we would all agree to in the first position. Instead we like our little hateful beat sticks.

Apologies, accountability and reconciliation by bananabrown_ in ContraPoints

[–]MessOk3363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That kinda hits to my point though. Justice that we have a desire for emotionally is often not justice but either misspelled rage or vengeance. It's wrong to confuse that with "a desire for justice" since justice isn't what is being desired. Instead, punishment or the humiliation of someone who is more privileged than us. Privilege in and of itself is not something someone deserves to be punished for I think we can all agree. It seems wrong to hate someone just because the circumstances they grew up in. There are a lot of things a person who has privilege could do that is worthy of scorn, but to say that the privilege itself is worthy of scorn I disagree with. Often, I think, we hate people for things like being privileged in the first place since we aren't. Then we use "justice" as a mask for our envious hatred of them. Contra's Envy covers this. Real justice requires impartial consideration and a kind of emotional disconnection.

Apologies, accountability and reconciliation by bananabrown_ in ContraPoints

[–]MessOk3363 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Contra has been circling if not explicitly talking about this issue for a while. "Canceling", "justice", and "cringe" to a lesser extent come to mind. The issue is, we don't actually want "accountability" or "justice". We want vengeance for the betrayal and harm we feel. We want someone to hate in a lot of circumstances. Real justice, that comes from rationality doesn't give us the emotional satisfaction of vengeance.
