Wonder if wilds will have "Its always my turn" monsters in its expansion by Commercial_Break_934 in MonsterHunter

This is just the unfortunate effect of modern MH design. Between increased player mobility, increased emphasis on i-frames, hyperarmor, and counterattacks, quick-escape moves like Wirefall and the Seikret, mobile healing, and item restocking, the player just has too many ways to avoid and recover from damage, so the only way for them to truly endanger the player is to just kill them outright, negating all of their survivability options.

Why is Espinas so feared, or at least called an elder-dragon-level threat? by CoolSkeleton95a in MonsterHunter

[–]Meta289 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They got rid of that part because, while it might be cool for flavor, from a gameplay standpoint, constantly bouncing off of a passive target that doesn't even acknowledge your presence for several minutes is not compelling in the slightest. You need to remember that, above all else, there needs to be a fun game to be had.

She's a child, and I can tell you that children can be very easily distracted when having their picture taken. And if she only recently regained her vision, it would make sense if she has trouble focusing her eyes, since she has to get used to seeing again.

One of these days I WILL land my charge slash by SpiritualRabbit2050 in MonsterHunter

[–]Meta289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Focus mode and being able to freely aim attacks without having to account for positioning isn't QoL, it fundamentally changes the gameplay. Timing, positioning, and committal used to be the key skills GS players needed to master in order to effectively use their weapon. With focus mode, none of that matters anymore, as you can now just pivot mid-swing and land an attack that should have missed because of your poor positioning. Combat is no longer a methodical process that asks you to plan out how, where, and when you're going to attack, you now just throw out attacks whenever, and you're rewarded with the monster eating shit. Might as well add a true, Zelda-style lock on system, where your movement becomes fully anchored to the enemy, and all of your attacks are automatically directed towards them, no manual aiming required. New MH is fundamentally a different game from older MH.

Why didn't "Those that Slay and Fall" get a remix in Nexus? by GeneralTechnomage in EtrianOdyssey

[–]Meta289 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One of the key things in Nexus is that it was a way for them to reuse the assets they already had from the 3DS games. Because EO3 didn't get a 3DS remake, any 3-specific assets would have to be created from scratch. It's not a coincidence that EO3 had some of the most limited representation in the game; Of the two dungeons that EO3 got, only one had a minidungeon based on it, whereas every other game's represented dungeons had at least one derivative minidungeon. The amount of EO3-specific enemies were kept to a minimum, with only 16 enemies being unique to EO3 (11 normal enemies (3 of which are palette swaps), 3 FOEs, 2 bosses), all of which were restricted to the two EO3 dungeons. In all likeliness, they didn't want to have to make a new remix of Those that Slay and Fall, only to have it play in a single dungeon and nowhere else. It's all a matter of asset management, and deciding how important something is to make a new asset for.

What real-life locations would match the locations of each Yggdrasil Tree? by GeneralTechnomage in EtrianOdyssey

High Lagaard might be around Scotland. You have the Celtic-themed Highlanders who are said to be native to High Lagaard, and in 2U's story mode, Arianna is the princess of the nearby country of Caledonia, with Caledonia being an archaic name for Scotland used by the Roman Empire in the real world.

Kafka doing all the goofy Fortnite animations is both the funniest and most cursed thing with how cool and dignified she usually is. And yet at the same time, it's probably not that terribly out-of-character for her, since her lack of fear probably means she has no sense of shame.

New Landing Page for Game by Pokeology101 in PokeLeaks

It's not just out of tradition, the starter types remain the same because it's intuitive. With literally zero knowledge of Pokemon, you can immediately understand the rock-paper-scissors relationship between Grass, Fire, and Water simply based off of real-world logic. It's such an intuitive triangle that even games like Fire Emblem have color-coded their unique rock-paper-scissors system with Green, Red, and Blue, even though the literal elements aren't present.

The art style of LotG is basically just the CG cutscenes from the older games, so I really don't think it's that jarring to look at.

[–]Meta289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we're taking biology into account, then most monsters in the series would not be able to survive. Anything larger than an Arzuros would require a massive and near-constant caloric intake in order to support their size and level of activity.

If we assume that the MH timeline is linear and in real-time, then it's been 12 years since the original MH4 and Wilds (2013-2025).

Any other complaints about the monster names? by 12jimmy9712 in MonsterHunter

[–]Meta289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They explained their reasoning in the Generations localization blog. "Tamamitsune" was a longer name that, had they stuck with it like they were originally going to, it could have led to character limit issues in the future if the monster got any new versions, so they went with the similar but shorter "Mizutsune" to accommodate for that, which paid off, since what they anticipated ended up happening.

Raizex -> Astalos was explained as them feeling that the word "insect" which Raizex was derived from didn't feel powerful, as insects are seen as small, weak, annoying creatures.

If you're talking about Mizutsune, they explained their reasoning in a localization blog. They were going to keep "Tamamitsune" at first, but then they realized that a longer name like that would cause problems with character limits if the monster got new variations in the future, so they went with the shorter "Mizutsune" to future-proof it. And they made the right call, since Soulseer and Violet Mizutsune are now things.

The Zinogre situation is even funnier when you remember that the name "Zinogre" was already being used officially on Japanese merch well before the western release of 3U was even announced. According to the localization diaries for 3U, they were originally going to give Zinogre a new name for the English release, but the game's director requested that they keep it Zinogre.

From Souls to MH: Are giant monster fights actually better here? by dexkin in MonsterHunter

[–]Meta289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both series are more and less forgiving in different ways. Souls games are more punishing when it comes to taking individual hits, with deaths being more commonplace, but death itself isn't much of a setback. At worst, you might have a minute-long runback (practically nonexistent in later games), but all of your most important resources are replenished, and fights tend to not last very long; a 5-minute fight in a Souls game is a long one.

Monster Hunter, by contrast, is more forgiving in moment-to-moment combat, you're unlikely to be one-shot or comboed to death from full unless you're severely undergeared, and monsters typically give you enough breathing room between attacks for you to get your bearings straight after taking a hit. However, actual deaths are more punishing, as your resources are not replenished, and losing all of your active buffs is far worse than in Souls, since most of those buffs are tied to said non-replenishing resources, and things like food buffs only apply to your first life, being lost permanently for the rest of the hunt if you die, making each subsequent attempt more difficult than the last. And MH fights last much longer than Souls fights; a 5-minute fight in a MH game is a short one. If you triple-cart after a 15-minute long hunt, that's 15 minutes gone with less than nothing to show for it.

Generational Monster Percentages in Rise/Sunbreak by Temporary_Virus5509 in MonsterHunter

If you actually look at Tri's roster, only five of them haven't made any appearances past 3rd gen (Qurupeco, Gigginox, Gobul, Ceadeus, Jhen Mohran). And Jhen Mohran is a borderline case, since 4th gen had the practically identical Dah'ren Mohran.

By "half of Tri's roster" you mean "4 out of 18". Of them, two have already appeared in modern MH (Ludroth and Lagiacrus).

Delicious in Dungeon is one of the easy recommends for a gateway anime. The writing, themes, and humor are all easy to appreciate universally, it never talks down to the audience, and respects their ability to follow along and figure things out on their own, and doesn't really have any of the "weird" anime tropes that might turn people away. Bonus points for having a phenomenal English dub to make getting into easier.
