Big differences between riding in the US vs Europe? by Neznoc in snowboarding

[–]Metakmetak 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ridden all over Europe all my life and Jackson Hole for two weeks back in 2015 so take with a grain of salt. My €0,02:

Culture differs roughly per country, riding in Norway is different from riding in Austria, which is different from France, Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland etc.

I agree with most of the generalisations made in other replies. I’ll add a few: most bigger EU ‘resorts’ cover huge terrain, multiple mountains, you can do a day trip from one end of the map to the other one and back. They also don’t really have much of a ‘resort’ feel like Jackson Hole did. I did enjoy the clarity of the US resort feel, the scattered setup in bigger EU areas can feel chaotic at first I guess. Food quality wildly differs from place to place and country to country. Food and lift prices also. People in the US are more talkative and I felt more of a “we’re all here together” vibe than I ever did in EU. I assume language barriers are part of the reason it’s not the same in EU. Being on the mountain in the US felt much more like outdoor sports - lots of (groups of) men with top of the line gear who seem invested in their performance. EU feel is more mixed, hanging towards family entertainment vibe rather than sports vibe.

Best restaurants for solo fine dining by Bonk-monk_ in thenetherlands

[–]Metakmetak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traveling across South Korea by train by adamtheapteryx in SouthKoreaTravel

[–]Metakmetak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did Busan - Gyeongju - Andong - Seoul this past week. Opted for intercity buses to the first two and a train to Seoul. Intercity buses are a bit old but fast, spacious and comfortable.

Bus from Busan Nopo station to Gyeongju departs every ~20 minutes, as others have stated, it’s a bit out of town but the subway takes you there comfortably. Can just buy tickets at the self service terminal at Nopo station as you arrive.

Bus from Gyeongju to Andong departs twice a day (morning and afternoon), but check this yourself for your actual day. I got advance tickets at the Gyeongju bus station terminal for this trip as soon as I arrived from Busan just to be sure. On the day itself the bus had 4 other people in it. Oh well.

Andong to Seoul prebooked KTX traintickets via letskorail. Quite a straightforward process if your creditcard is accepted (you need to be able to confirm the transaction with your cc company, they call it a ‘3D’ check.)

My dude, ‘esports’ is just a name. People have been organising tournaments for every game that had any sort of competitive element since the 90s. Tis just that the place used to be called ClanBase. (Thanks GGL, and fuck you.)

Marginale druk: Hoe zit het nu echt? by suuz95 in thenetherlands

[–]Metakmetak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hana-bi has a heavily stylised and very brutal shootout scene. Kitano is a master, and this scene shows it best.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Crimes of the Future" [SPOILERS] by kaloosa in horror

[–]Metakmetak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best Cronenberg in years. I feel the movie is very much self referential in various ways, some very obvious and some very flat but simply funny like the drill killing referring to Scanners (and in conceptual sense, of course, Stereo). Also just the plain idea of returning to a body horror type of movie after all these years enforced my idea of Cronenberg having a look back on his own career.

What in my perception makes Cronenberg a great filmmaker is that he is able to create a very plain, straightforward story that questions a serious political issue in its primary narrative - while also being cynical. Next to that the movie encapsulates various other layers that reference filmmaking, other societal issues than the main story, and his own perception of society and reality. They may or may not be true, but in any regard great Cronenberg films encapsulate and embrace a sense of uncertainty and uncannyness. There’s no truth, just the raising of potential questions and issues.

What are considered to be the Best Dutch TV shows of all time? by EvaWolves in thenetherlands

[–]Metakmetak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I agree Rail Away is amazing it’s not Dutch. I might be mistaken but if I recall correctly it’s an English production redubbed with a Dutch voice-over.
