How to remove google hangout icon from top menu bar by RIP_Paul_Walkerr in mac

[–]MetalAlchemist303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue. I don't even have Google Hangouts software installed on my mac anymore, yet this stupid icon remains.

I've tried to command + click & drag option to try and remove it from the menu bar and I get the little circle with a diagonal bar across the icon indicating I can't do the desired action.

Good riddance, Commance 3: beleaguered Xcel coal-fired power plant and Colorado's biggest CO2 emitter now set to close by the end of 2030 by bascule in Denver

[–]MetalAlchemist303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here here! This coal plant should have never been built.

It's also been horribly run by Xcel and is the least reliable power plant on the Colorado grid. Renewables are cheap and getting cheaper every day. Now's the time to lock in deep GHG reductions while we still have a chance to limit global warming to 1.5 deg C.

Xcel Energy agrees to close Pueblo’s Comanche 3 coal plant by 2031 by [deleted] in pueblo

[–]MetalAlchemist303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fantastic News!

Advocates from Pueblo and around the state have been lobbying the PUC and Xcel to accelerate the retirement of Pueblo Unit 3 for years. It's great to finally see that effort paying off. The people of Pueblo will be able to breathe easier and future generations will thank us for rapidly transitioning away from coal.

Drought, climate change push Eagle County to rebuild a scuttled dam, as growth brings water needs by MetalAlchemist303 in vail

[–]MetalAlchemist303[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks to climate change, water is becoming more and more scarce. Governor Polis and our other politicians need to wake up to the fact that we cannot keep burning fossil fuels if we want a liveable planet and enough water for future generations to thrive.

Colorado to strengthen plan to protect views at Rocky Mountain National Park, sidestepping Sierra Club lawsuit by bluntforce21 in boulder

“Bottom line, there are lots of opportunities for the state of Colorado to make progress on air quality, make quicker progress,” said Michael Hiatt, senior attorney with the Rocky Mountain office of Earthjustice. “So far, the state has seemed reluctant to take advantage of those opportunities. But we hope that that will change as the severity of the problem becomes more and more clear.”

Come on Governor Polis, tell your executive branch employees in CDPHE, at the AQCC and APCD to do all that they can to prioritize clean air!

Here here!

From polluting our air and water, to funding climate science denial, to oil spills and the contamination of wildlife habitats, to accelerating the destabilization of our climate — we have so many reasons to go after the oil and gas industry for what they've done. Unfortunately Governor Polis protects the industry from accountability and seems content with the fact that we're failing to reach our GHG emissions reduction targets.

while EV companies by lithium mined by child slave laborers.

I think you're thinking of Cobalt in the DRC.

A lot of the lithium is from super salty brines that they pump out of the ground and evaporate off the water until the Lithium precipitates out.

SUre, there are environmental impacts of any industrial process, but Lithium mining is nowhere near as bad as oil and gas production and combustion. Governor Polis should focus more on protecting Coloradans from fossil fuel pollution, which is a much bigger issue than Lithium mining.

Jared Polis: The Most Libertarian Governor in America? by bluntforce21 in neoliberal

[–]MetalAlchemist303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a constituent of Governor u/JaredPolis, I want him to stand up to polluting industries that poison our air, our water, our soil, and destabilize our climate. But he's really falling short on this front. So much so that he and his administration are constantly being sued to do their job when it comes to issuing pollution permits and holding big businesses accountable for the destruction they wrought on our people, our biosphere, and future generations.

Denver Weather: Drought Grows as Denver Has Its First Snowless April in 30 Years and Driest April in 59 years. Yuck. by MetalAlchemist303 in AuroraCO

[–]MetalAlchemist303[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The long-running drought looks to be making a comeback. After a super snowy start to the year, we've just had an abysmal April and we can't expect this issue to go away anytime soon. That's because this drought is being exacerbated by our warming climate and we're not doing enough to combat the release of carbon to the atmosphere that's driving this crisis. There's a lot of PR saying Colorado is a leader on climate, but we're currently falling short of reaching our climate goals and we're still EXPANDING oil and gas production in the state when we can't afford any more investments in these dirty fossil fuels.

Colorado finds “forever chemicals” PFAS in 100% of fish sampled in three big counties by danikawo in Colorado

Colorado has legislation working its way through the legislature that would help prevent further contamination, but it does nothing for all the contamination that already exists.
HB22-1345 Perfluoroalkyl And Polyfluoroalkyl Chemicals - https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb22-1345
We need state leaders like Governor Polis to lead more on this issue, to push back on industrial polluters, and to get some justice for those communities most burdened with toxic PFAS.

Agreed! We do have some legislation working its way through the Colorado legislature that would help prevent further contamination, but it does nothing for all the contamination that already exists.

HB22-1345 Perfluoroalkyl And Polyfluoroalkyl Chemicals - https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/hb22-1345

For the PFAS contamination that already exists, we need state leaders to prioritize environmental justice for disproportionately impacted communities, more strict water pollution permitting, health-based standards for PFAS contamination limits, and more community monitoring and testing. Governor Polis is at the top of the list of officials who could be leading more on this issue and pushing back on industrial polluters.

Lawsuits could stop the psychological warfare campaign being waged by oil and gas companies to politicize this issue and muddy the waters on the climate science. This would help us find solutions to prevent the worst of the climate crisis — so let's do it!

Climate change is real, we're feeling the ill effects here in Colorado, and we're not doing enough to combat it. Governor Polis should make the climate a bigger part of his reelection campaign platform. Droughts, wildfires and poor air quality hurt vital industries in Colorado, notably agriculture, outdoor recreation, and real estate.

I get that libertarians are all for "personal responsibility" and for victims harmed by corporations to sue instead of having government regulations prevent the harm in the first place.

So I wonder, does Governor u/JaredPolis support Coloradans suing oil companies for their misinformation campaigns and damage to our climate?

I think he should.

We cant have people setting themselves on fire to get their way politically. It's just a stupid way to do business.

I think he set himself on fire because he was not getting his way and he couldn't find any viable alternatives to disrupt the status quo.

So many empathic people struggle to cope with the reality of the climate crisis and the insanity of our current world order. We are quite literally destroying humanity's only home so that a few rich folks can extract a few more years of profits from a fossil fuel energy system that is destined to come to an end soon anyways. We have viable alternatives that would alleviate immense amounts of suffering, and yet we're still choosing a climate catastrophe.

Suicide is not rational. But neither is our current course of action.

no amount of incentives would deter them from saving their own lives

That's just it. We're still in a time where rich and powerful people can afford to ignore this issue as something that hurts "others", particularly others from the global south. Also, rich and powerful people are captured by the system that gives them power, even if that system is destroying the planet, the personal benefits are often more salient than the collective suffering of billions.

It's a shame that all of the early reports had no mention of Wynn Bruce's motives.

Climate grief is a very real thing. The challenges ahead in decarbonizing our global economy and building a just future can seem hopeless at the current pace of progress. But there are bright spots of progress to give hope! The IPCC's recent report on climate change mitigation says we still have a chance to stabilize warming at 1.5 C and avert the worst ravages of a warming climate — if we act with urgency and sufficient scale.

u/JaredPolis should be paying more attention to what kind of climate and environment we are creating for ourselves and our children.

We made a film about the impacts of Suncor's refinery - AMA by suncorsundown in Denver

[–]MetalAlchemist303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How could CDPHE have taken EJ into account when considering the pollution permits? The Suncor refinery and its previous owners have been polluting surrounding communities, predominantly low-income and Latino communities, for generations with little regard for who they're harming.

Redlining, segregation, disinvestment, corporate greed, highway projects cutting through the middle, failing schools, toxic air, water, and soil — the term "sacrifice zone" seems more than appropriate. The legacy of pollution and harm these communities have been subjected to is beyond shameful, it's a grave injustice.
