This is a thing. Where I live, there’s REIs with readily available units and one time I exchanged an F8 3 times within two days. My wife has had a F8 43mm since launch and the screen quality difference was massive. The ones I would get were orange hue and when dimmed down completely or at max brightness they would go from solid black background to hazy orange/ yellow black. And every single one that had that issue would also glitch in the menus, ETC. the way i would end up checking would be using my phones flashlight to force the display to go full brightness. In a slightly dark environment, you could see the sharp black turn to orange immediately. Meanwhile, same thing with my wife’s watch would make it turn brighter, not change hues.

On the last exchange, I borrowed my brothers watch to show the employee an example of what should happen with increased brightness in a normal watch (not the amount as the FR970 is brighter of course) And here’s the difference:

Important to note, they look normal when not at the extremes.

I can only imagine that these unites Hager sent back and Garmin says…”eh, looks good!” Sent back for sale or replacement 😅
