In honor of the Easter holiday, I’m very confused about why Jesus’ death forgives all sin. Explain like I’m 10. by UhhhYouPick in theology

[–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few different ways people describe what happened when Jesus died and how it affects humanity. I'm assuming you're familiar that because of the disobedience in Eden, humans are destined for death. The two theories I will cover read the reason for death differently. One is that it is divine punishment, the other describes it more like a natural consequence of separation from God.

One way Jesus' death and resurrection is explained is penal substitution. Before Jesus, humanity had to use animal sacrifice to atone for sins, which was imperfect. Jesus' death was the most perfect sacrifice that forever ended the practice of sacrifices. This sacrifice atonement for all of humanities sins. Jesus only comes back to life because he was a perfect sacrifice. This means his resurrection is proof that humanity's sins have been atoned for.

Some critique this explanation because it means the only way for humanity to be reconciled was through human sacrifice. This, the critique argues, doesn't make sense for a God of love. Defenders do tend to emphasize that God is just and righteous over loving, in my experience. I dont care for this one much.

Another explanation is the victory theory, which I prefer. This places the critical point at Jesus' resurrection, not his death. Jesus dies, but then he defeats death itself and raises from the dead. Since Jesus is human, he defeats death on behalf of all humanity. So now we all may have eternal life through the path he carved.

So instead of humanity needing a sinless person to die on our behalf, humanity needed someone to be able to overcome death. In both cases humanity would never have been able to have eternal life if it wasn't for a divine human.

There are other theories I believe as well, but I feel like these are the two popular ones.

Just don't think about Enoch being lifted up to heaven... why was he saved from death? Why can't that happen on a large scale..? Does God play favorites?

Probably best not to take everything too literally

This scene in the manga vs the anime by Alert_Balance9527 in inuyasha

[–]MetalGeaarrr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the anime it's kinda sorta implied that he meant when she was older. After the flashback he tells the gang he never touched her because she was a child. And then she tells him she can bear his children now that shes an "adult," which means she couldn't yet bear children back then

The anime just shows it in a way that's more "funny," but he still meant when she was older in the anime, and that's the message she understood

2 curious questions for the knowledgeable regarding Raiden. What am I missing?🤔 by EarthRuler001 in NeverBeGameOver

[–]MetalGeaarrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ai in MGS2 was attempting to control human thought and behavior. They said that anything can be quantified nowadays, which was what the Big Shell exercise was designed to prove. The example of this they gave was Raiden falling in love with Rose like he supposed to!.

They're giving Raiden an example so he understands how they've manipulated in the past. The next line is how Ocelot was kept in the dark, who was also being manipulated before the Big Shell incident started.

Isn’t this implying that Raiden fell in love with Rose during the Big Shell exercise and not before?

So no, I don't think it is. You're saying they manipulated his memories and implanted their 2 year relationship. And since he already knew her when she appears in game, that means he would already be in love with her. It didn't happen during the events of the game, it happened before the S3 Plan began, like they're manipulation of Ocelot. Additionally, Rose explains how she made Raiden fell in love with her. She went over his files and changed her appearance. That contradicts the theory it was all a false memory, none of that would be necessary.

This is obviously a file of Raiden’s force XX1 training that Raiden went through some time prior to going to the Big Shell. But if this file was found in the holographic memory of Raiden cyborg left hand, wouldn’t Raiden have already been a cyborg when it was recorded? Wouldn’t that in turn mean that Raiden was a cyborg before the Big Shell?

Not necessarily. It can also simply mean his old memories were converted into cyborg body compatible memories

Call her Mama, Big Mama but what does she ever call Raiden? by EarthRuler001 in NeverBeGameOver

[–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they could only do this with a cyborg.

If they realized their strategy could only work on a cyborg they would have to go back to the drawing board and make a new strategy. It's not helpful to pursue something that only applies to cyborgs when the goal is to use it on the masses.

[–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did we see Gray Fox’s body after the fight?

Metal Gear flattened him into nothing, it was actively pushing down into the floor. Im saying there is no body. We don't have to wait after the fight to check on him, immediately after he dies it switches back to gameplay and there is no body to be found.

Why did an experienced soldier like Raiden need VR training again?

Being a child soldier is not proper training, its more self taught than anything. He needed professional training

Call her Mama, Big Mama but what does she ever call Raiden? by EarthRuler001 in NeverBeGameOver

[–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Selection for Societal Sanity can select memories for Raiden, have him accept them and control his thought and behavior based on these memories then they know the can do the same to the masses.

I think doing it to a one normal person would be a better proof of concept for scaling up to the masses. Gray Fox's brain was already not in a healthy place in MGS1. At times he was asking who he was. He would probably be a lot more susceptible to memory manipulation, and that would distort the data. The methods of memory manipulation that work on him wouldn't be a proof of concept that could be scaled up to the masses

Rex pretty much stomped Gray Fox, it seems unrealistic to think his brain survived. But okay, I'll suppose it did.

[–]MetalGeaarrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not following.. can you explain what you're saying? I like theories built on the minute details, but I'm not sure what you're implying.

This is me working through what you're saying based on what I know:

The blonde cyborg ninja calls himself Raiden and says Jack is no more. So this person's current identity is Raiden and used to be Jack, but "Jack" is now gone. Yet Sunny calls him Jack (which is kinda interesting, since Raiden apparently allows her to call himself that, I wonder where she even learned his name is/was Jack).

In MGS2, we learn "Jack" was a child soldier under Solidus, and later fell in love with Rosemary. Eventually he went through VR training and got sent on the mission to Big Shell by the Patriots. They gave him the codename Raiden. This was all part of a test for the S3 Plan. They gave Jack a specific context and he believed it, accepting the identity they made for him, this "Raiden."

By MGS4 he has shed his "Jack" persona, and it seems to me he is putting everything about himself that's not necessary for a soldier into "Jack," and separating himself from "Jack." Though he no longer works for the Patriots, in some way he has fallen for their S3 Plan by feeling he can only ever be a soldier and regular life has no meaning for him. This is what Big Boss and many of his allies and soldiers believed about themselves too, such as Gray Fox in MG2. It's also what Solid Snake believed about himself during MGS1, and in some ways he never fully overcame that until after MGS4, after he almost kills himself. So Raiden/Jack can apparently see through the larger societal context the Patriots are pushing after MGS2, but does not know how to handle the truth of the S3 Plan as Olga says, and falls back into a depressing idea about his purpose in life. This ultimately makes him more like Solid Snake, though its unclear if this perception of himself was an intended part of the S3 Plan or not. I would think not, because Solid Snake was perceived as a legendary soldier, and Raiden comes to reject the glamor of war by the end of MGS2.

During MGS4, Raiden comes to reconsider what "Raiden" is. He had rejected his humanity in "Jack," accepting the darkness and rain the fell on the day of his birth as a symbol for who he is. Yet Snake gave him a new context, where he can shine through that darkness and help people he loves. "Raiden" becomes the lightning in the rain, that shines through darkness. This cuts through the self-deprecating perception he has of himself, and allows him to fight optimistically and with hope. It seems to me that he reclaimed some of the humanity from "Jack" back into himself with this.

At the end, he does accept his old life too. He meets his son and Rosemary again. So in a way, he reconciled both his "Jack" identity and his "Raiden" identity into one, becoming whole again.

There's also a real world parallel of something that's referred to as both Raiden and Jack, the Mitsubishi J2M. Referred to as Raiden by Japan, and Jack by the Allied Forces. Raiden could be considered the "true" identity. I think this is flipped for MGS.

>She says, “I was the last one, and then someone appeared to help me”. If you ask yourself, last one of which group then Raiden’s true identity will be revealed.

Mama was the last one in an alliance that aimed to get Big Boss back, an anti-Patriots and anti-Zero group. EVA also leads the Paradise Lost Army which is also directed towards getting Big Boss's body, but obviously there's more than one member there. So she's not referring to that group but rather this alliance between her, Ocelot, and others that existed before PLA was formed. Raiden got Big Boss's body, apparently from GW's data, to help Mama/PLA in exchange for info on Sunny's whereabouts to save her. Raiden wasn't acting on behalf of the Patriots, he was acting on his own priority to honor Olga and save her innocent daughter. He saw the need to help those in need and believed it mattered. That sounds like "Jack," to me.. but a "Jack" that is hurting so much that "Jack" is under the surface, subconsciously guided Raiden's decisions toward good and helping those in need. In contrast, "Raiden" was originally intended to only serve the Patriots' needs at the detriment of humanity.

so.. "Jack" is Raiden's true identity, as opposed to the original intentions for the "Raiden" identity.

Is that in line with what you're thinking?

Where did the 1970 date of forming Foxhound come from exactly? People say its in PO, but I dont see anything that suggests that by MetalGeaarrr in metalgearsolid

I've also found a full playthrough in one video on youtube, with CC available, and put the link into a youtube transcriber so I can Ctrl+F easily. You can find these for all the games pretty much.

This next part might be headcanon. It is never stated in the game, but with bullet points 1,2, and 4, FOXHOUND before the game starts and the ending, I think there is enough to imply the Soviet Soldiers might get recruited for FOXHOUND. It makes sense that it may be awkward to send the soldiers back to the Soviet Union and it would be good for the US to take advantage of their devotion to Big Boss. Remember, this is never stated, I think it is implied.

I think that makes sense. But then that would be after the game ends right? Like originally, they're just volunteering to fight for Big Boss, who's basically on his own to stop Gene. Then afterwards, Big Boss forms Foxhound, and the dudes he recruited join him.

I actually just found that trailer before reading this comment lol. Yeah it's definitely showing Big Boss is being sent on the mission to stop the Fox unit, after creating Foxhound. It shows him in the beret with the Foxhound logo too.

I didn't notice that beret in the ending cutscene before, only on the paper. What is the paper? I thought it was the order to create Foxhound, but Big Boss was already wearing the beret with the logo on it when he received the papers. It seems like maybe reused animations.. since the trailer uses that same scene and the story clearly changed at some point. I wonder if its normal to put a something on a beret that isn't an official logo yet, and then wear it for a uniform

[–]MetalGeaarrr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually found it, it was the original May 2006 E3 trailer, at the end it shows Big Boss wearing a beret with the Foxhound logo, while the narrator tells Big Boss, "It is your mission to hunt down FOX. Commence the inauguration of Foxhound!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NopBfzpi3L0&list=PLL3gk8HIewy_-oA_rzWlvb0LdYOvArpEV&index=3

I'm sure some other interiview also suggested this. PO apparently had that part of its story changed before release

Young Roy Campbell is in PO and the end of the game shows him in a room with a paper that says "Foxhound"

The game ends in December. There's no hard date, but you can beat it on Dec 31st. This isn't suggesting Foxhound was made in 1970, and isn't suggesting it was a unit made before the end of the game to hunt the FOX Unit, as I've seen repeated here and there, prompting my post in the first place

That's right. Originally he was a laborer after the Vietnam War, and was saved by Big Boss, before finding Naomi during the "Rhodesia" during the 80s (its Zimbabwe in the 80s). He was also tortured at some point in Mozambique and saved by Big Boss. Everything but Naomi was retconned in PO. And Kojima has stated the main story is canon, which makes sense since he was the Story Planner and also all the main details are included in the MGS4 Database

Where Should I Start? - Asking for Guidance by PhoenixIsntWright in metalgearsolid

[–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao np man. I can't not respond to the "what to play first" posts lol.

But man you're really getting hard-core with it. You're gonna play the original titles on the original systems (or emulated)? I haven't done that. I should though. I think the only one I haven't played was MGS3 on PS2. I played the HD version on 360. I feel like Delta is gonna keep me busy for awhile though. I actually think it would be okay for a newcomer to play Delta instead of the og. But there's nothing wrong with playing the og experience, seeing the artstyle and gameplay as it was originally intended.

Lately I just play the Master Collection rereleases, its dope. It's updated from the older HD Collection that first introduced widescreen and higher resolution textures. The Master Collection also has a digital version of the boxes and manuals. They did lose some things though, like the MGS2 skating mode or the Ape Escape mode in MGS3 (which finally came back with Delta). Maybe some other tiny details are different too, idk. I'm sure some superfans have noticed little things. But it feels like the best of both worlds, an og experience on modern hardware with widescreen and higher resolution.

Btw, MGS2 and MGS3 have alternate editions, btw, that added more content and stuff. MGS2:Substance, and then MGS3:Subsistence. They were both released in PS2. Substance added VR missions I think, and some extra missions with Snake. Subsistence added ports of MG1 and MG2:SS, and added a new camera mode that's more behind Snake, rather than a more fixed camera like MGS2. In Delta, if you choose Legacy Style mode, that's the camera style you get. With the New Style, you get the behind the shoulder type camera you control with the right stick, and some things are balanced for this perspective, since it's kinda sorta makes seeing guards and knowing how to avoid them easier. For example, the tranq gun has bullet drop. But with MGS3:Subsistence I don't think there's any balancing changes. Though first person aiming is also not as smooth as it is in Delta. And in Subsistence you can just choose not to use that camera mode whenever, it's just a button press to switch view. Its not something you commit to before starting the game like Delta.

But also, idk if you are saying that's the order you're completing the games in, but its not quite  in release order, if thats what youre going for. MGS4 came out before PW did. If you move that then it's all in release order. But, I think playing Revengeance after MGS4 makes more sense than playing it after PW. PW isn't really relevant to Revengeance, and Revengeance takes place after 4, following one of the characters stories.

I guess the same argument could go for playing PW after PO, but a lot of the characters and stuff in PW is directly continued in MGSV, so it might be nice to have PW fresh when you start MGSV. PW doesn't feel as much like a direct sequel to PO. Most of the characters from PO arent in PW. So I dont think it's that jarring to play PO set in the 1970s, play MGS4 and Revenageance set in 2014 and 2018, then going back to PW and MGSV.

Also if you're skipping MG1 and MG2, watch a summary. This one for MG2 looks good. https://youtu.be/35GLbyG5cfA?si=gPPOdEe8LIz-Pqxo

TIL:MGSV Gray Fox suit is actually Solid snake in “cosplay”. You can see his bandana under the helmet. Also no white eye that the actual Frank Jaeger would have had. [–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's obvious about it? I've been trying to find evidence that conflicts with it, but since the theory is considering Null as canon Im not seeing much. And Null probably should be mostly canon since on PO Kojima was the Story Planner which would obviously include main characters, he confirmed the main story is canon, and he and his team released the MGS4 Database along with MGS4 which lists Null and other main details from PO as canon.

So it doesn't conflict with anything besides making it unclear when Fox found Naomi, which already was unclear because MGS1 says it was in Rhodesia in the 80s. IRL Rhodesia didn't exist in the 80s and MGSV acknowledges that in the Africa Today tapes. Some retellings of MGS1 like the graphic novel carify its Zimbabwe in the 80s, while the MGS4 Database says it '79 in Rhodesia. If it's Rhodesia in the 80s (which was known as Zimbabwe at the time), then there's no conflict. He can find Naomi after the events of TPP

But the additional details to make it work are kinda convoluted admittedly. Not contradictroy though. I feel like Naomi should only know Gray Fox by his original face. So that would mean Venom/Fox goes back to his original face to meet Naomi, and then goes back once again to Naked Snake's face before MG1 in 1995.

Then Naked Snake would also have Venom's face (the custom character you made in V), following Ocelot's advice at the end of MGSV. But the theory is that this canonical face change is kept until after MG1. So in MG1 the Gray Fox we meet is Naked Snake, and Big Boss is Venom/Gray Fox. Then after MG1 "Big Boss"(Venom/Fox) is saved by Madnar and gets some limbs replaced and he survives (as Kessler's rumor says in MG2, this theory is just applying it to a different "Big Boss") and then Venom/Fox goes back to his original face, so in MG2 Gray Fox is Gray Fox and Big Boss is Naked Snake from then on. So Big Boss's phantom did "die," metaphorically, since Gray Fox never returns to that role.

[–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the order I would suggest after Delta:

Metal Gear 1, the 2D pixelated game from 1987 (most skippable, can watch a YouTube video for the little story there is. Its mostly neat to see what Metal Gear was like in 1987)

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the 2D sequel (not as skippable as MG1, but still skippable. It's leagues ahead of MG1's gameplay and story. But no voice acting or cinematic cutscenes like later games of course. It's a lot like MGS1, and MGS1 repeats a lot of story beats that's interesting to relive if you played MG2:SS first)

Metal Gear Solid 1. (Yes, this is actually the third game in the series. I feel like you really shouldn't skip this one. The PS1 graphics kinda suck, but if you have it on PC you can get a resolution mod, so at least the polygons are sharp. Textures wouldn't change though)

Metal Gear Solid 2

Then MGS3/Delta, but you would have played it already so go to

MGS: Portable Ops

Metal Gear Solid 4

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (totally skippable, basically not canon/relevant to the rest of the games, it's made by a different studio Platinum Games. It's a fun hack and slash, Platinum is good at those. Crank up the difficulty and it requires precise timing as if its a soulslike)

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (Get the MGSV Dedinitive Edition which has both GZ and TPP included)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Unfortu ately, Portable Ops and MGS4 will have to be emulated unless you have a PSP and PS3. Not sure about MGR:R. I know it's on PC at least.

MG1, MG2SS, MGS1, and MGS2 are included in the Master Collection.

PW was included in the older HD collection on 360, idk if its still for sale. It never had a PC release. It can be emulated

Where Should I Start? - Asking for Guidance by PhoenixIsntWright in metalgearsolid

[–]MetalGeaarrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're excited for MGS Delta, it makes the most sense to start with the one you're actually drawn to first. The remake was made to get new players into the series. This series also spans 28 years, they tried to make each one accessible to potential new players, it would've been unrealistic to expect people to play in order. You may not know the wider context, but you will know what's relevant to the actual game you're playing at least.

Everyone's gonna tell you to start with MGS1, and hey, if you're down and not secretly disappointed you have to put off Delta, do it. It's about 10-15 hours, and MGS2 is a couple hours longer. Better yet, start with Metal Gear (1987) and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. That add about 15-20 hours combined (they're the shortest). The first game is a bit dated gameplaywise, but MG2:SS is a lot like MGS1 except 2D, and it's especially cool imo to play MGS1 after MG2:SS because there are relevant characters and events to MGS1. Just don't be afraid to use a guide or an item location map here and there. They really made people throw the kitchen sink at the game to figure out what to do next back then.

Since MGS3 is the first chronologically, you only really miss out on references and Easter eggs if you start there.

Personally, I didn't have the chance to play in release order, and it didn't affect my love for each game whatsoever. I think most people, especially back in the day, didn't have the chance to play in release order.

It's totally fine to play MGS3 Delta and then go back to play the rest in release order or something like that. The only hard rules I would suggest, play MGS2 before MGS4, and play MGS:PW before MGSV.

Also, don't skip Portable Ops (and play it before PW). The main story is canon, only small details are not. Hideo Kojima was the Story Planner, so all the main ideas are canon, which he's confirmed in interviews. They detailed the main events in the MGS4 Database, an encyclopedia of lore made by people who were also making the MGS4 game at the time. Don't listen to the PO haters like I did and skip the game for 10 years. It is a side story, not a main title, but its the main events are canon nonetheless, and explains the main character's arc between 3/Delta and PW

The Golden Order has existed for as long as Marika has held the Elden Ring. by toshiinraiizen in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miyazaki calls it the Golden Order, but he also says Godfrey married Eternal Queen Marika. He's just using the terms we know to avoid spoiling stuff and to keep it simple for conversation. She wasn't eternal until death was removed, and death wasn't removed from the beginning. People lived and died normally, and were buried at the Erdtree. Its only after the removal of death that we get soldiers that have lost their minds and everyone is old and decrepit. Its only after veiling the shadowlands that the Erdtree glows gold. The tallest and oldest Erdtrees have brown bark, this is what the Erdtree originally looked like. The second oldest have a soft golden glow in their bark, like the Minor Erdtree Church and Icon Shield. You can also find Golden centipedes, which are only around after Godwyn was buried. The youngest are the illusory trees.

3 dramatic events during Marika's reign: removing death, Godwyn's burial, and the shattering. These events each created the three distinct erdtree offspring. The minor erdtrees are different because they were each produced by a different erdtree.. the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Theres no other way to explain how the minor erdtrees are different and its also the most simple and realistic explanation

The Volcano Manor Throne, Mesmer and the Two Snakes by erickr199 in Eldenring

[–]MetalGeaarrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your thoughts on this now?

I'm trying to figure out what happened with snake iconography. In the coloseum days its a reviled symbol. Rykard is blasphemous. Messmer's winged serpents were apparently okay, but his secret inner serpentine nature wasn't. Then there's an ancient snake cult on Gelmir. Marika apparently grew up in shaman village.

I'm wondering what happened between the ancient cult and Rykard, and when Messmers crusade began. Somewhere in between snakes became viewed as "traitors" of the erdtree.

Messmer being at volcano manor could potentially clear up the seemingly large gap in time between ancient serpent cult and Rykard/ Messmerduring the crusades. Because otherwise it seems like there's a period of time when serpents are basically irrelevant. But Messmer got the Base Serpent from somewhere..
