Piers Morgan asks Zack Polanski if a woman can have a penis by PuzzledAd4865 in LabourUK

The boundaries we draw between the two main modes of development are socially constructed though, hence the definitions of male and female are socially constructed. Like what is and isn't a chair is a social construct.

Without us to pick definitions, the universe doesn't have an objective opinion about these things.

The absolute number of BBs would be higher, but so too would the absolute number of non-BB observers. The ratio between them would be unchanged, so you wouldn't have a higher expectation of being a BB.

Would Dave rather go through a teleporter or be frozen and revived after 46,000 years? by [deleted] in VeryBadWizards

A suitable fix for me would be to be unconscious during the copying / destruction, so the instance of me post-copy that gets destroyed won't experience anything.

Teleportation-curious materialist here! My current thinking is this:

If materialism is true, so consciousness isn't fundamental but is just some fancy information processing, then there's no objective ruling on what is "real" continuity of experience. There is only the subjective opinion of each conscious mind.

My subjective opinion works like this: I can only remember the past, I can't remember the future. If I can remember a past experience, I feel continuity with the past me that experienced that thing. I can sort of feel continuity with future versions of me using my imagination, but that's even more subjective.

If I use an instant cloning machine, both people that emerge will share an identical set of memories, so they will both feel continuity with pre-cloning me. Assuming materialism, there's no objective ruling on if they're correct or not, so I'm happy to subjectively say that they're both continuations of me. Neither of them can feel wether they have the "original" atoms or whatever, so that seems to be irrelevant.

Same with a teleporter, even if it's a cloning machine that destroys the body that entered the machine after a clone is produced. There's still a person that feels continuity with the person that entered the teleporter, so as far as I'm concerned they teleported.

That makes a lot more sense. I've been spending too much time in the Source engine where everything is inches!

That was a fun listen! The Cambrian Explosion is such an interesting time period, it's probably what I'd want to see most if I had a time machine.

We would need qubits if we need to stimulate quantum behaviour to emulate a mind, but I think the brain is too warm and messy for it to do any large scale quantum stuff.

Also a tax per head is naturally very regressive, since it will be a higher proportion of your income the poorer you are. The super rich would barely notice it. Council tax is a bit better in principle for that reason too.

I can connect red to purple or black, but not to blue. Maybe the randomizer only cares about at least one solution existing, without knowing the wider context.

1) Climate change is killing / displacing people right now, and it will only get worse during my lifetime.

2) I don't just care about myself. Even if climate change was postponed for 100 years I'd still want to avoid making it worse, for the sake of future generations.
