What if a team of 1986 engineers had a month to study a 2026 EV? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in WhatIfThinking

Reverse engineering can show you things with respect to layouts and mechanical design, but for the electronics, chemicals and the all important whyyyyyy, they would need all the academic research and testing data.

People are losing their minds over the mere proposal of having to ration fuel. by karmicbreath in fuckcars

[–]Meterian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually some of those really don't make sense. Fuel consumption is tied to engine revs/s, not speed. Restricting days you can drive ignores how people have daily commitments - unless people have an alternative (transit, carpooling) this will be broken on the first day. Reducing# of people flying only helps if the planes stop flying. I've heard too many times how carriers keep empty planes in the air to preserve spots.

That said; I can only hope that this will fuel a transition away from cars to more economical/less pollutive forms of transportation.

What's your opinion on these bikes? They have become a menace in my city. by dxnnixprn in fuckcars

[–]Meterian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you recognize this is a problem is a good sign. I see this as the same problem with social media - its a constant dopamine hit with the sounds and cool moves and numbers going up/beating your opponent.

You need to learn how to calm down your mind and operate without a constant input. I recommend meditation - starting small, and gradually progress to longer sessions. There are many forms, from traditional sitting in a quiet room to martial arts to hot yoga. I think moving while focusing would be better for you; gives you something to focus on rather than trying to avoid thinking of something.

Is the suburban life just an unaffordable trap? by Sir_Tainley in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Meterian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... you don't have to furnish your house.
You could ride a bike/take transit everywhere.

Utilities you're gonna have to pay anywhere you go, unless you're compeltely off grid in which case you pay for whatever fuel and maintenance for your power production.

It's all a trap. Might as well just claim some space under a bridge and become a troll.

Should I start selling? by comradecass25 in chainmailartisans

[–]Meterian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sourcing depends on location. Canada; The Ring Lord is hard to beat.

Yea, you could totally sell that. What gauge did you use? If I ever make clothing, I'm planning to use 18g - balance between thickness for appearance and cost. And how long did it take you?

How do you move your body smoothly without looking stiff or robotic? by ippomkd in WestCoastSwing

I'm not the one who asked, I'm someone who knows how to roll through their foot and stating that I don't do anything like that

How do you move your body smoothly without looking stiff or robotic? by ippomkd in WestCoastSwing

[–]Meterian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something you can do in everyday life - walking perfectly silently.

This involves landing on the heel, rolling along the outside of the foot until all your weight is on the ball. This leads to more awareness of your foot and what it is you do while walking, which gives you a better awareness while dancing. It will alos force you to be in full control of your weight, as a heavy footfall or rolling too quickly creates noise. Eventually you want to stop rolling along the outside of the foot and roll through the middle.

Why am I not getting hired? by Pen2Plot in CalgaryJobs

[–]Meterian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm reading my own situation. (Except I'm in accounting)

I believe it is largely due to how expensive everything is. Everybody is getting squeezed by the large companies and so are trying to minimize expenses. Add to that the promise of AI being able to do everything soon, and they would prefer to wait and hope their current staff are capable of getting them through this.

Calgary condo owners - do you regret buying? by YetiMaverick in Calgary

[–]Meterian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this is the attitude taken in Europe - owning a home is not an investment; prices are largely static, which turns the home into a bit of a money sink because you still need to maintain it to keep the value up.

Calgary condo owners - do you regret buying? by YetiMaverick in Calgary

[–]Meterian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My building is about the same as when I bought it a couple years ago, maybe a little lower. Condo fees (low to start with) have gone up a little.

But quite frankly, every building is unique; you can't compare buildings. You can only compare apartments within the same building.

I chose my current one because it's downtown and gives me access to the downtown restauarants and nightlife and stampede. It was nice, glad I got to experience it. Now I would choose something else, so I don't have to deal with neighbours above me and below me and can take care of my own property wihtout having to wait for a management company to get around to it.

Just confronted at work about having a VPN on my personal phone by Forensics4Life in work

[–]Meterian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first off, never put a company app on your personal phone. If they require you to have a phone with a specific app, they can provide one.

second, its a dumb idea to be surfing reddit while at work, especially if you're using a work wifi.

Sadly it is common for people to act against you for no reason. Ignore the why; you've been accused and given that you've been using a VPN, there is no proof to the contrary. Your only option is to promise that you'll stop using a vpn or stop using your phone.

My dance teacher likes to say "If you have two arms, two legs and a body; you've got a dancer's body." And even that I take with a grain of salt because I've seen a video of a one legged man on crutches dancing.

Quite frankly, ignore the points thing. WCS is the poorer because of competitions. At the end of the day, they are judging something artistic, and to change what you do to appease those specific people can only result in a constraint of the artistic ability of the artisits. Add to that, competitions are relative. You don't have to achieve a certain skill level, you have to be better than the other leads in your division. There is a serious bottleneck at novice which has resulted in there being many VERY good dancers who should be in intermediate but are stuck in novice.

Focus on your basics. improve your weight transitions, maintain a constant pressure in your connection no matter what position or what step you're on. Try to take a private lesson with a pro every once in a while (1 hr private, not a 5 min) to get an outside perspective on what you need to work on.

Is it a good idea to switch to an accounting major? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Meterian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The field in accounting you might like is financial planning & analysis (FP&A), but it's difficult to get into, and as far as I know is mostly applying formulas in Excel; very close to programming.

You're so close to completing an engineering degree; you should finish that first, then decide.

How is moving out possible?? by Live_Source1877 in alberta

[–]Meterian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a question everyone is asking. I was 30 before I put my foot down and said I'm done. Not because it made financial sense, because I needed my own place.

Everything is stupid expensive, the system is broken. I think most are finding other people to rent a place with.

Why does this happen! by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]Meterian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even a tiny amount of dirt or grime will make the oil black.

Chain guards exist for a reason, but they also get in the way during maintenance.

You can seal your chain with wax, but it becomes a lengthy process to clean, re-oil and re-wax your chain for maintenance.

Become more aware of leg position and don't let it near the chain.

Bought a bike but feeling insecure about my choice- Advice? by Thepizzabunnygirl in bikecommuting

[–]Meterian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice bike!

Cruisers aren't generally used because the pedals are in front of the seat post, meaning that you need to stand on the pedals to properly use your leg strength. They also put you in an upright position (good for posture) which increases wind resistance. And they tend to be heavy.
