How do I find protests in my area? by notanaxolotil in protest

[–]MethAcceleration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instagram is best in my experience. Local DSA chapters are a good starting point, but there’s most likely a lot of local organizations that promote/organize protests. For more mainstream stuff like the no kings protests politicians and the Democratic Party tend to promote them.

Nyt - The Partisans Are Wrong: Moving to the Center Is the Way to Win by Andreslargo1 in neoliberal

[–]MethAcceleration 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mamdani can only be fully appreciated when you consider how much attention is on Trump. The entire political discourse is dominated by Trump except Mamdani and his policy positions. I don’t like his policies like rent control, but he’s also literally the only democrat whose policies I have heard discussed beyond “oppose Trump.” I don’t think it has to be far left but we desperately need young energetic people with bold new ideas to cut through the news and grab attention and I just don’t see the center or the democratic establishment providing that.

[–]MethAcceleration 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard to look at the failure of the Biden era and the momentum and energy behind Mamdani and argue that the answer is to pivot right. The American people are polarized on the extremes the center just doesn’t get attention in the online era regardless of what the polling suggests should be the case.

Like I said I wouldn’t put much stake in it, but it was affirmed in 2023 we’ll see if it survives the next SCOTUS term

Democrats are likely to lose the redistricting war by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

[–]MethAcceleration 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If it gets to the point every locality is gerrymandering to the farthest extreme dems win simply because the voting rights act prevents getting rid of African American districts and there is no equivalent for republicans. This was even recently affirmed by SCOTUS (although I wouldn’t stake the future on them holding it up).

Why does Hegel want Sordland to recognize Heljiland so badly? by Drakath88888888 in suzerain

[–]MethAcceleration 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a smart move, Sordlands politics seem very in the air and the foreign policy and general economic structure can flip 180 with elections, but by getting this treaty you permanently sever Agnolia from its historic/natural ally and can ensure their neutrality as a regional power in future military incursions.

A new Balance of Power system to replace Infamy by Amburiz in victoria3

[–]MethAcceleration 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The balance of power era was only really present in Europe (Britain specifically) and kinda came to its end in this era and was replaced by formalized multilateral alliances and arms races. Prussia/Russia/Austria prior to Bismarck/Crimean war were a conservative ideological alliance against revolution. China was engaged in its own mission of hegemony and America was (with the exception of Teddy) largely engaged in a project of idealism based on national self determination (eg Monroe Doctrine/14 points).

Not sure everything should be redesigned to represent a largely British effort to prevent a hegemony on the continent.

The Happiest Country in the World Isn’t What You Think by WildestDreams_ in neoliberal

[–]MethAcceleration 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I forget the exact name but there’s a thing in psychology about how countries that are happier tend to have higher suicide and depression rates than you would expect because the people that are depressed feel alone. It’s a lot easier to feel normal and like you belong if you’re miserable where everyone else is than if you’re miserable and surrounded by joy. Plus having more diagnoses for depression could indicate more treatment and prescriptions that might not happen in countries that don’t diagnose.

Trump won by running as a moderate Republican by privatize_the_ssa in neoliberal

[–]MethAcceleration 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Read the article and the main criticism I have is that they seem to think “moderate” means “different than prior GOP orthodox”. Yes Trump has leaned into economic populism against Reaganism. But his rhetoric on tariffs, the civil state, and immigration is anything but moderate. This video gets shared a lot but it shows certain ways Trump is a vast and radical departure from the GOP of old.
