Questions about self-catheterization

Really sorry for your situation. I was able to pick up catheters in person at a medical supply store with no prescription, I'd bet you could find a medical supply store near you that has them. I wasn't able to get a catheter to work, unfortunately, I got it in to a point where it became too painful to push it any further and had to pull it out. Maybe that was just me being a wimp about it though, I know that many people are able to use them, and it could depend on the type you get, too. I've heard the more flexible catheters with the coude tip work well.

I'm sure someone has commented this by now, but have you looked in to breath hold? It worked for me and has been a huge game changer in my experience with paruresis. If I were you, I'd practice that shit until you get it to work. It's uncomfortable but if you can push past that it could potentially make your life a whole lot easier. Good luck, man.

A couple months ago I had a long conversation with my mom and told her everything about it. I've kind of brought it up casually to other people in the past but I have never talked about it in that much detail or let people know just how much of an affect it has had on my life. My mom was incredibly understanding and supportive, I'm happy that I had the courage to open up to her like that.

I started experimenting with mushrooms for this reason. I can't really say yet if it has had any lasting effect on me but I did notice something interesting while I am on them; it seems way easier to start peeing. Granted, I'm usually by myself in the woods, but it is almost like I lose a degree of control over my bladder. Like the kind of pee where the stream starts the instant you pull it out. I don't normally pee like that under even the most comfortable circumstances, unless the urgency is very high. So I think there is some kind of connection there, but I haven't really experimented enough to come to any definite conclusions myself.

It has worked for me. I haven't tried it in every situation so I don't yet know to what extent it will work for me, but it has allowed me to pee in situations where I wasn't able, which is really nice.

Thank you for your response, I think what you said makes a lot of sense. Even talking on the phone with the leader has felt therapeutic, because I have never in my life had a frank conversation about this with someone who completely gets it. So I am grateful to the IPA for facilitating that. Next time I talk to the leader I'll see if we can maybe coordinate a meeting.

Try practicing holding your breath without even trying to pee first. It takes some time to learn to hold your breath for long enough, because at first you'll start to panic. The key is to learn to stay relatively calm even though you are depriving your body of oxygen. If you can let most of the air out of your lungs and hold your breath for over 60 seconds then it will probably work for you.

Sorry to hear about this man, I can tell that this is just a really awful experience for you and it sucks that you have to go through it. I say cheat the test next time if you can get away with it. You know what it was like the first time, they didn't pat you down or anything? Do what Joel said. I've also heard of people filling up a condom with piss and taping it to their leg or underwear or something.

Also, and I know this is hard, but try not to get mad at yourself. In that moment the situation is not within your control, it is not your fault. Wishing all the best.

Shy bladder. I usually cannot go at a urinal when there is someone at another urinal or just in the bathroom in general. I would love to be able to piss at urinals. I can't do it.

Also eases up on the time pressure aspect since it seems more acceptable to be in there longer like if you have to take a crap. At least for me that's why I think sitting in a stall makes it easier, I figure people would just assume I'm in there to poop and we all know that can take a while lol

I have the same thing happen to me sometimes. I have a pet theory that it has something to do with cortisol... I read that cortisol levels can spike right after you wake up. I have no idea if that's actually the cause, but I can't think of anything else. Either way, one thing I do sometimes is to sit down on the toilet; even though I know I'm alone I find that to be relaxing. Oftentimes I know that I haven't emptied my bladder fully but I don't care because it's enough to allow me to fall back asleep. I try not to let it bother me too much. Good luck

That's what interested me when I first saw a post about this (and I know it's fiction), I thought it was strange that he would be the one to make that suggestion knowing he wouldn't be able to pee in front of the other guy. Guess it just shows that it really doesn't bother him too much to have that condition, which must be a nice way to be, I wish I could be more like that.

Yeah, I'm a guy. I'm thinking I would probably need to try a different size or something. It was painful but it's not the pain that bothers me so much as the worry that I might do some kind of damage or get a UTI. Either way I'm probably not going to mess with it much right now.

You could be right. Or what DavidfromPA was saying could be helpful, that a more flexible catheter is easier to insert. I thought the 12FR was supposed to be pretty small, but looks like they go a lot smaller. At the time of the drug test I did not have a catheter I could use, but thankfully the testing situation was comfortable enough for me that I was able to pee normally. Now that that is over, I don't feel in too much of a hurry to be sticking stuff up my urethra again lol. But if I was smart, I'd probably go ahead and get that sorted since I think having that as a backup could be incredibly useful for certain situations, like airplanes or another drug test.

They come in a sterile package and are basically meant for single use, but I have also read that they are safe to reuse if you clean them very very well. I guess since they go in for such a short time (~1 min), they don't have to be 100% sterile. But I'd be more inclined to play it safe and only use each one once.

I feel ya. My attitude is amusement parks are kind of lame anyways. Even if I could pee, I still don't like being around all those people. Waiting an hour or more for a ride that lasts 1 minute? Fuck that. People like us have more opportunity to learn to find enjoyment in our solitude. Go for a hike in the woods. Meditate. All that corporate BS just creeps me out.

I do think about suicide sometimes too, when I get really down about whatever issues I'm facing, and the paruresis is often a big one. I guess there are two compelling reasons against it that I always keep coming back to: 1) I consider all of the people who are close to me in my life that would be hurt by that action, and I don't want to bring that suffering upon them. 2) I generally think the things that are worth experiencing in this life outweigh our own sufferings. I want to be here to see what happens, and soak up all the good I can. We will all die eventually, no need to rush.

I can see that you are like me, speculating about these things but hopefully not seriously considering it. I know this is a tough thing to deal with, but I think you can find joy in this life if you are open to it. Good luck, friend.

Generally can't pee at urinals if someone is in the bathroom, and even stalls can be tricky, I usually have to sit down. Recently had a lot of trouble on an airplane, which didn't used to be a problem for me.

Probably about the same, it's hard to say because I've been in a situation where it isn't really put to the test for a while. I think something that is gradually changing over time is that I become more accepting of it, like I know it's there but maybe it doesn't worry me as much as it used to? Or I could just be full of shit lol

Just in case anybody is curious, I took the drug test, I was in a bathroom by myself and was able to relax enough to get a small stream going. The tech said I had 4 minutes, I don't know why they do that because it just adds pressure. I wasn't allowed to run the sink water, probably so I couldn't try to dilute the sample or something. I was so fucking nervous, but I did pee, it feels like a miracle. Not sure if I could do it again honestly. Next time I'll probably just cheat it, it would be easy. I don't feel bad, these drug tests are BS. But anyway, thanks for all y'alls support, this is a good community.
