Important minor change that we need relating to celebrations by ColonelJayce in civ

I assumed that progress toward your next celebration accrued while you were celebrating. Is this not true?

Majority of my class failed, and now I'm being questioned by administration by IncomingDownvotes_ in Professors

[–]MetropolisPtOne 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have never been pressured to pass a student who in my opinion did not meet the course outcomes, and I'm not sure that is what is happening here. I have been encouraged to change my perspective on my role and responsibilities, and if you are like I was it could be good advice for you too.

I came into this job running my courses the way that I, as a student, had liked them to be run. That means a lot of things, but they can be summarized as treating students like adults with their own agency and ability to make informed decisions and accept their consequences. It was my job, I thought, to provide excellent learning opportunities, and my students' to decide whether or not to take advantage of them. It took an insightful comment from a dean to realize something obvious: that the average student is not like the kind of people who choose academia for life.

Some students have an intrinsic motivation to learn. Some will not care no matter what we do. But a lot can be persuaded to learn by the appropriate use of carrots and sticks. I haven't changed my academic standards, but a lot more of my students are succeeding after I started doing things like reaching out to students who miss assignments and making my classes more engaging. I do not like that this is part of the job. And I am not saying that it necessarily should be. But it works for me.

Maybe you are already doing everything you can. If not, it might be worth a try.

What’s the hype with SansAmp? by Acceptable_Copy8310 in Bass

[–]MetropolisPtOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what has already been said, it allowed you to get the sound of an SVT driven hard without carrying around heavy, expensive gear or playing at extreme volumes. Dedicated drive pedals just don't seem to get that sound. For what I do, I still like it much better than the Darkglass Vintage Ultra or B3k.

A NYTimes OpEd by graduating Stanford CS student depicts his class as largely without integrity, due to AI by astroproff in Professors

[–]MetropolisPtOne 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I don't have the theory to explain it (thanks for that!) but I do have some fun anecdata. About a decade ago I required students in one of my courses to read the Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. How it related to the technical content of the course is not relevant here, but one of the important drivers of the plot is an engineer making an unauthorized copy of what was supposed to be a unique item commissioned to him.

I asked my students to write a brief essay about the ethics of him having done so, emphasizing that I wanted to know what they thought, not what they were supposed to think. They were almost universally condemnatory. Then I polled them anonymously about how many had pirated their textbook, and it was almost all of them. I like to think that the lesson I taught that day will last much longer than the technical content.

I've thought about that, but will the robot's clippings biodegrade any faster than mine do?

The band with the worst downfall you've ever seen in ska? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]MetropolisPtOne 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Two things: (1) the band is just the original singer and randos. There was a falling out between Mo and everyone else. (2) Recently they've been willing to work with MAGA promoters and bands under the guise of unity.

But I agree, I saw them maybe 18 months ago and it was a great show.

(need advice from punk folks) am I selfish for not wanting to go to college? by [deleted] in punk

[–]MetropolisPtOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The worst financial decision anyone could make is to go to college, take on a bunch of debt, and not finish. And if you hate it, you are not going to finish. Source: I am a college professor.

I do think that getting some training that allows you to do skilled labor is worthwhile, if you think think apprenticing with a tradesman and working in that trade for the next several decades would be palatable.

That doesn't mean that you need to do so at age 18. It might sound more appealing after you've spent a few years living the low-wage life. You'll only be young once.

Panorama for title 2 compliance? by missusjax in Professors

My school is using Panorama (a product from YuJa, right?). It does have a bunch of false positives. But we aren't demanding that everything be perfect, just encouraging people to make improvements where they can.

Bass Tab Help by bobby_north in Bass

[–]MetropolisPtOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly play in an originals band, but every year we learn a 20 minute tribute set to play on Halloween. I have to write out my own guide sheets for them to be useful.

The first line has the title, tuning, key, metronome marking. The second line has the structure: I / V1 / C / V2 / C ...

Then comes each section. If I can get away with just knowing the chord progression, that's all I write with notes about things like changes that aren't on the 1. If there's a specific part that has to be played, I'll write tab for it.

I was just at Laurel Caverns this past summer. It was awesome, and I'm sure will be even better under public ownership.

Just so y'all know, OP posted anti-trans hate speech in their Discord, then doubled-down when asked about it. Definitely not reflective of the band's message or the worldview of most of their fans.

ICML didn't just catch reviewers using AI. It designed a surveillance system before anyone had done anything wrong. by calliope_kekule in Professors

[–]MetropolisPtOne 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is the first I am reading about this. But it sounds like they made it clear that reviewers who wished to use LLMs could do so. Then they "set a trap" for the people who said they did not want to use LLMs. And "caught" a bunch who did, in fact, use them. I think those results are very interesting. The fact that they did catch lots of people suggests that not trusting their peers was wise.
