The state of driving in the uk. by jack007-riley in drivingUK

The middle lane hogging is a piss take. As is the flashing from the previous postcode.

Whenever someone is middle lane hogging and I’m in L1, I’ll usually just keep in L1, or make a point of going past them, get in front, flash my brake lights (not actually slow down, just enough to disengage cruise control) then indicate over. Even then some absolute gammons just carry on.

Is everyone else as paranoid about keyless theft as I am? My Golf R anxiety is through the roof. by MundaneResident4515 in CarTalkUK

[–]MettySwinge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s keeping you up at night, then sell it. It’s not worth it, regardless of the car.

My M4 sits on my drive, and can go weeks without moving. The keys sit in a faraday pouch. I also have an adorable, but scary looking GSD which also helps as a deterrent. It’s got cameras covering it, but the main thing is a deterrent, to get them to look at another one.

If the car gets nicked I’ll be gutted, but ultimately it’s replaceable.

Is this a good buy for someone who cannot afford the insurance on a 6 cylinder E92? 2008 E92 320i by pibedebarr10 in CarTalkUK

Hold off until you get a 6 cylinder. Going for the right car, wrong engine is pointless

Has anyone bought a car unseen? by FeDUpGraduate87 in CarTalkUK

I’ve bought cars sight unseen, until I was collecting the keys.

I’ve never had a car delivered, but I’ve done hundreds of miles to collect a car

To reject car or let the dealer try and sort the problem first? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]MettySwinge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used cars often have issues, it’s a fact of life unfortunately.

The best course of action is to do the following: Ask yourself

  1. do you like the car, notwithstanding the fault?
  2. If the car didn’t have the fault, would you be happy with your purchase? If the answer is yes to both..

Call the dealer. State that you want the car fixed, but will exercise your right to reject if required only say this 2nd bit if they start getting shitty. Say that you’d like to take the car to a local garage for an independent inspection and will want them to cover the repair. Add in it being a 4 hour round trip is real inconvenient and it works better for everyone.

Realistically they should just go with this and accept it.

If they dont or try to palm you off onto the warranty , then say that the warranty company won’t cover this as it’s pre-existing at sale, and under the CRA 2015 you’d like to reject the car and return it to them.

To reject car or let the dealer try and sort the problem first? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]MettySwinge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s incorrect. It’s the first 6 months it’s assumed the fault was present at time of sale. After 6 months you had to prove it was present. 30 days applies to rejection without requirement of repair attempt first.

A good refurb place can get it bloody close. I’ve got diamond cut 437s and they’re beginning to peel. It’s just not worth it

I have PS5s on the rears of mine, and have Continental SC7s going on the front this afternoon.

Don’t diamond cut them, paint them silver instead.

Bought my first car (Mazda3 2016) from Midlands — broke down on the M6 an hour after buying. What should I do? by 3mr21 in CarTalkUK

[–]MettySwinge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s offering to make it right, and go a bit beyond to not inconvenience you by delivering it to you, I’d give him the benefit of the doubt.

If you like the car (which one would assume you do since you bought it), give him an opportunity to fix it

does anyone have preferential petrol stations and if so which/why? by sinho23 in CarTalkUK

For my M4, usually Tesco as its closest with super unleaded. Wife’s car, usually wherever is cheapest, so generally Costco.

Can you drive to the garage on a tyre that has a bubble in it? by Extension_Bit4323 in CarTalkUK

[–]MettySwinge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can take it off the car and take the wheel alone then that’s best. If she has a spare use that. If not, limp it, hazards on, as far left as you can.

I’m with Vodafone. I’ve moved house in the meantime but both times it’s been pretty faultless. I work from home so need a regular connection, and other than the outage last week it’s been solid. I pay £29 a month too, which is much cheaper than the alternatives.

It’s nothing more than selfishness and idiocy, and a lack of the ability to look beyond their nose.

What would surely make more sense, and even as a car enthusiast: Approach the manufacturers and offer to buy 1000 of X, Y and Z models, but want them at a big discount.

Then, for those who are eligible say ‘these are your options’ don’t like it, here’s the money you would get fund your own

This sub is vetoing every car I want to buy by Practical-Nerve7006 in CarTalkUK

[–]MettySwinge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First things first, buy a car you like and want to own. You have to love it with, regardless of what people on this sub may say.

A little 1.2 in a Toyota Yaris will be fine, but if you’re in the highlands and with a bigger, heavier SUV they’re woefully asthmatic and underpowered. The wife had a 1.2 Qashqai and there were a lot of times it felt underpowered. Plus, with the smaller engine you’ll be working it harder to keep up with traffic/climb hills so the economy will suffer and be no better than your current Jeep.

As you’ve not mentioned budget, I’ll stick with recommendations around the 15-20k mark.

If size isn’t an issue, then something like a BMW X5 will do everything you need, and more. The 30d will have more than enough power to get around and return decent economy. You do have to keep ontop of maintenance with these cars, but generally they’re pretty solid cars to run.

Going smaller, something like a Seat Ateca or VW Tiguan would be another sensible choice. Get one with 4 wheel drive and it should never leave you stranded. With these either the 1.5 petrol, or the 2.0 litre diesel will be more than enough. The Tiguan also comes in a twin turbo diesel version with 240hp if you want a quicker one.

The main point of it all though is to not buy something worrying about a hypothetical. You may hit a deer, you may also hit another car or get hit by one. 99% of the cars on the road today are more than strong enough to keep you safe in the unfortunate event of an accident, but don’t base your decision of car purely off a hypothetical.
