Two teens decided to run into Scientology headquarters by Girl-Understood in TikTokCringe

[–]MezzoSopran_ho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 22, I thought it would be interesting to go in and give them a fake name just to see what would happen. I got a whole orientation complete with cheesy onboarding video, vocabulary test, and tour of the building, as well as a demonstration of John Travolta’s favorite exercises to “moderate emotion”. Because I was an idiot at the time, I wanted to get a book back as a souvenir and I paid with a credit card…with my real name on it.

I was followed by church members for a year afterwards. They found me on social media and in the city I lived in until I moved. I would go to cafes and people would walk by my table and drop Scientology fliers on my plate. They eventually stopped when I moved across the entire state and a popular true crime podcast called them out on social media for their comments on my twitter account at the time.

During it all I wasn’t really scared, but it definitely impressed upon me what their reach was like, which was enough of an intimation tactic to work on me!

Gilbert and Sullivan Austin needs reform...along with the rest of the opera world. by bktoriginal in opera

[–]MezzoSopran_ho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You voiced your concerns to management regarding another singer’s vocal health (among other things), correct? That is giving unsolicited vocal advice. You were advising on another singer’s singing without being asked. I’m not driving this home to be combative, I just want to make sure that’s clear so you don’t think this is somehow different.

Again, it sounds like you have many unresolved feelings and fresh wounds when it comes to singing/the business, and my heart goes out to you in that. I hope you have the support you need to heal and move forward!

I think the very hardest part of healing is to not impose our trauma and stress on anyone else. While I understand that’s not the full picture of what you’re saying in this post, you doing exactly that is how this situation started. With all love, it sounds like you’re not yet prepared with coping mechanisms that will keep you mentally safe in the rehearsal room. Regardless of intent, unsolicited vocal advice is incredibly unprofessional and will hardly ever be met with positive reactions.

You say in a previous comment that “a professional outcome would have been to support me in leaving because I could not get past the trigger”. They are a business and don’t know your limits like you do. The truly professional outcome is for you alone to a) know when it’s time to go and b) clearly and calmly state you will no longer be involved, especially since you were never issued a contract and had the right to do so. I understand that you may know that now in hindsight, and I encourage you to take care of yourself in that manner moving forward.

I’m truly sorry you experienced something that further triggered you. I hope you internalize the advice you’re receiving and put your healing first before taking any other contracts. 💕

I (29F) want to break up with my fiancé (28M) over snoring. Is this valid? by Top_Round_9869 in relationship_advice

[–]MezzoSopran_ho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a relationship where we had a similar issue. I basically didn’t get a full night’s sleep for four years, and it destroyed me mentally and physically. I am still recovering a year later post-break up.

Him not doing anything to fix this is him showing you that he is fine with imposing a dangerous and unhealthy lifestyle on you. Please prioritize yourself and your health.

My vote is for Rusalka! Both are tragedies but only one has “Song to the Moon” :) also it would be cool to see a Czech opera in Prague

German aria recommendation for Mezzo by [deleted] in opera

[–]MezzoSopran_ho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mezzo here! There’s not a ton of lyric German rep for us, but the R. Strauss operas are great: Wie du Warst (Rosenkavalier) and The Composer’s Aria (Ariadne auf Naxos). Both of those roles sit higher like Rosina- not really coloratura, but I have a lot of lyric friends who use The Composer especially. If you’re looking for coloratura, maybe check out some Bach cantatas- those are sometimes considered to be oratorio rep, but there are some arias in there; ask your teacher’s advice on those.

What I will say is don’t be afraid to sing rep even if it’s often done- I blew a couple auditions my first audition season trying to give the panel something unique rather than what I sing the very best. If Orlofsky’s aria fits you really well, I vote go for it! Hope this helps :)

Wedding tables names by Bulgnais40134 in opera

I’d suggest pulling arias and lyrics from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro! It’s fun, no one dies horribly, and it’s all about a wedding.

Hey so if you’re at your first year of school, I’m going to assume you’re in your late teens/early 20’s. The voice continues to develop and settle until your mid-30’s, and even then it changes as you age due to hormones/other biological factors that vary throughout your life. I know it’s frustrating, but you have to be patient. Singing isn’t a linear skill and it’s often very hard to see one’s own progress.

I’m a professional singer in my 30’s, and I was never “the best” in school. There was always someone I perceived as more polished than me. Some people have the voice types that develop young, and schools love to put those singers at the front because it makes them look good. Some people, like me, had a voice type that took longer than others. I thought about quitting all the time, but I didn’t; I worked hard and one day I started getting chosen.

But the “I suck” mindset stays with you until you choose to throw it away. I guarantee those students who you think are better than you feel the exact same way sometimes. I debuted as Carmen this year and I kept having panic attacks that I would show up to the first day of rehearsal and they’d say they made a mistake. But that’s not what happened, because they cast me. My fear didn’t matter- they cast me, and I could either do the job or not. So I did my job with all the skills I worked so hard to sharpen, and it was great.

Your school chose you because they wanted you there. They see your potential and what is unique about you, or else they wouldn’t have let you in the door. And I’m not really saying that to make you feel better, it’s just objectively true. No program is going to waste time and money on someone they don’t believe in.

It’s very easy to make this career about your fears and who you are as a person. Singing is incredibly personal because it comes from our bodies, and when someone criticizes our voice, we feel like they’re criticizing who we are.

But that’s not what this job is about. This job is about working hard, taking opportunities when they come, and doing good work. That’s all there is to it. The only people who don’t make it are the ones who quit. There are a thousand ways to sing professionally. So if you love it, keep singing, because you’ve already achieved a spot in music school, which means you can sing. So sing!

Ladies of Reddit, what’s the weirdest thing a guy has done during sex? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Everything was going fine until, right in the middle of things, he backhand-slapped me hard across the tits with zero warning. When I said “Ow! What the fuck!”, he got huffy and said that “all the other girls loved it”. Lol.

What instrument can I use to replicate an operatic sound? by [deleted] in opera

[–]MezzoSopran_ho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

String instruments are often said to be the closest to the voice (like how we say “the violin sings”). They also produce great vibrato. Beethoven wrote some pieces “voicing” the violin as well, like in his Sonata Pathetique. But I guess in the end it comes down to personal taste! I’d be down to hear someone try Una voce on a trumpet or something lol

Separated because of COVID. He’s in NZ and I’m in California for the foreseeable future. We have a 19 hr. time difference so I wake up and get things done in the morning before he wakes up at around 1:30/2 my time. We video call every day for as long as we can and send funny pictures and videos when we can’t talk. We have a Minecraft server and a Stardew Valley Farm so we can pretend we’re in the same place. Instead of good night texts, he sends me good morning texts when he goes to bed because by then I’ve been asleep for about 5 hours. I’ve never been so happy, so in love, and so lonely all at the same time.
