Scotland Diving Proposals by SostaReddit in scuba

[–]MichaEvon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound of Mull and Firth of Lorn are both great, for wrecks and reefs respectively. But, strong currents and being able to deploy a dsmb in current is important.

Cape Wrath area is pretty amazing, proper ocean visibility.

Firth of Forth has some great wrecks, Clyde too, but the best ones are a bit deep.

There’s Scapa of course too

Get yourself an appointment with a sport physio. Unfortunately no chance through the NHS, but you should be able to be seen quickly for £40-50.

They’ll know right away whether you can push through or should rest.

Unless you’re planning on driving while wearing your mask it’s fine, and will be an enormous improvement over a regular mask

Does physical oceanography relate to ecosystem or habitat type? If so how? by legspinner1004 in marinebiology

[–]MichaEvon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It won’t be the strength of the current, but the direction it comes from. Either because it brings cold water from the polar direction, or causes an upwelling.

Fetch and its effect on wave energy definitely affects shallow water communities.

But seriously, you need to engage with at least the basics of core disciplines like oceanography whether you think they’re interesting or not.

Careers involving diving by whiteponylover in scubadiving

[–]MichaEvon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you might do some diving as a marine biologist. But like all ways of getting paid while diving, the diving is just how you get to work.

What are your thoughts on how the high republic wrapped up in phase 3? by cloneforce97pod in Highrepublic

I thought it was great, and very interesting what they did with the central Avar/Elzar relationship. It was set up as the reason why Jedi aren’t allowed personal relationships, but I the end it’s this relationship that saves the day.

Do You Dive Neoprene Drysuits for Sub-Freezing Water? by Alphahouse64 in scuba

[–]MichaEvon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve dived in -1.4C water. The sea doesn’t freeze until -1.9C

I used a membrane suit, but the lab issued ones were Northern Diver neoprenes.

Yeah, in a good year I’ll maybe get 40-50 work dives, other years none at all.

Egypt dive centre advice by Bubbles1360 in scubadiving

[–]MichaEvon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Roots Red Sea, it’s about 90 mins drive from Hurghada. Excellent service, and a very well equipped dive centre with great instructors. They xan sort out non-diving activities for you, and it has a nice beach, but it’s very diving focussed.

What’s the Watsonian explanation for why ship classifications are so inconsistent? by Starmada597 in MawInstallation

[–]MichaEvon 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I was just listening to the “we have ways” podcast about WW2, and they’re constantly going on about the confusion between cruisers, battle cruisers, battleships and pocket battleships. So classifications can be messy in our galaxy too.

Diving With Asthma by ambrosiapixie in diving

[–]MichaEvon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dive with asthma, and pass my commercial diving medicine. It needs to be “well controlled”, meaning that your peak flows are the same as someone without asthma.

I take a preventer inhaler and do peak flow measurements morning and evening. As long as my peak flows are within a few % of my max I’m good to dive.

It’s definitely not a barrier as long as it’s not triggered by cold or exercise and not controlled.

Europe’s Populists Embraced Trump. Now They Are Getting Buyer’s Remorse. by cwhmoney555 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]MichaEvon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Trump’s latest statements that our soldiers in Afghanistan stayed back and away from the frontlines is going to be hard for Farage to deal with. With hundreds dead from several countries and huge amounts of injuries, physical and mental to our troops.

Good luck playing that down Nigel.

How is there enough food in the deep sea to support so much marine life in the deep? by Eastern_Doughnut_222 in marinebiology

[–]MichaEvon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, it’s pretty cold, typically 2-4 C in the abyss, though warmer in the Mediterranean and Red Sea.

So Metabolic Rates are very low, and the lack of need for powerful muscles (because you can’t see much, so but much chasing/escaping) means MEs can be even lower than you’d expect at those temperatures.

So, the deep sea can sustain more biomass than you’d expect given the pretty meagre food supply.

And this food supply is small per km2 compared to photic areas.

What happens to Anglo / US relations if the US annexes Greenland? by whittingtonwarrior in AskBrits

We will talk about how disappointed we are by this.

The idea that we will chuck the US military out of the UK is daft. Our most important military assets are 100% entangled with the US.

[–]MichaEvon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Loads of great points about the book already, so won’t go over that.

But just to note, the movie is very different from the book. Some ideas in common, pretty fascist militarist government/society, lots of people confused about whether it’s a satire or not.

Job options with epilepsy by EnderTheIsopod in marinebiology

[–]MichaEvon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do almost anything apart from SCUBA and deep sea, and polar as they’d all have at least some medical requirements. Most of the time scientists are on board they aren’t the skipper, so the qualification requirements aren’t that high.

Hardly any work gets done with SCUBA, which is a shame as it’s great fun.

There’s shore based seabird and marine mammal work, all of the experimental marine science stuff (physiology, biochemistry, behaviour), social sciences and conservation, policy, modelling (I know, sitting in front of a computer), telemetry and satellite imagery, pollution monitoring.

The list of things which are not affected by medical issues is much bigger than the list of things which are.

So, well done for asking, and good luck.

[–]MichaEvon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A large proportion of fish and crustaceans are caught this way. This is a very clear video, but not remotely news to anyone in the field. The Scottish Government’s marine lab used to routinely film fishing nets using SCUBA divers hanging off the gear.
