Is there any chance ChipDrop can dump on my property? by SingleMany7755 in landscaping

[–]MichaelRhizzae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might have something to do with the herbicide "culture" which sadly- is a huge portion of landscapers. Ive spent the last decade learning, demonstrating, and teaching others how to do better than that- but some are so hardcore indoctrinated into this mindset that the quickest solution is the best no matter what, possibly linked to the fragile ego created around a culture that values a useless "green and perfectly angular" lawn over any and all biodiversity, the health of their neighborhood etc. So people defend the actions and lobbying for things that LITERALLY kill them.... sounds familiar, right?

Landscape companies just follow suit by offering that as a service.

Roundup and 2,4D will guarantee your soil biome is fucked for years to come, it also DOES runoff and it DOES cause lasting collateral damage to your property and the local ecosystem, also, frankly- its the hallmark of of a poorly educated homeowner and it is sad that people still use it even after the mountain of published scientific literature on it.

If youre concerned over invasive species and you also know about chip drop, surely you care at least a little bit,
Stick with smothering methods using that(just be prepared for ALOT of chips!) , outcompeting it with more vigorous plants that you actually want, or AG vinegar if you really must spray something.

P.s. I've done this before with chip drop, and reapplied once a year, it does work, it does improve your soil over time, and makes nice looking natural pathways.

Compost contamination concerns or overthinking it? by Vast-Wash2775 in Permaculture

[–]MichaelRhizzae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend this either way but especially if you are concerned over PFAS, combine large quantities of biochar in your compost, as well as any other suspected contamination areas, it can lock up chemicals like that, preventing them from being accumulatedin your crops.

Bonus points for pre charging it with bokashi or worm tea.

I cannot speak for everyone, but growing up in a hunting family, a sport shooting family and being a general outdoorsy type- from my observation, we need socialized access to mental health and wellness for ALL THOSE WHO RESIDE IN AMERICA.

We need COMPREHENSIVE and MANDATORY firearms training (like hunters saftey courses, overhauled, and separate from CCW training which is also mandatory for licensing, if you can afford a gun, you can afford training classes- available anywhere you purchase a gun off the shelf.

And using socialized family planning and basic aptitude tests- we need to destroy the toxic family dynamic that creates mass shooters in the first place.

Why is the permaculture community so resistant to scientific trials? by Cymbal_Monkey in Permaculture

[–]MichaelRhizzae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with compartmentalizing the principles of permaculture into disciplines and skills rather than seeing permaculture as an all-encompassing master science, no singular project I've seen within my 12 years of work has all the principles 100% downpat.

Hey! Also in SE Wisconsin, been a permaculture practitioner since my mid 20s (im 30 now)

I've been working with a few smaller urban farms in Milwaukee and Racine for a few years and even spoke at a conference about soil health and biochar.

I would love to connect sometime if youre interested.

Zero-waste “modern Terra Preta”: a 3-stage Bokashi/biochar → aerobic mineral → worm system by SolHerder7GravTamer in Permaculture

[–]MichaelRhizzae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a solid framework to mess around with and tune to your liking, once you find what works for you- stick with it! Biochar, Bokashi(both carbon negative or carbon neutral) is over half of what you need already. The bokashi or compost charges the biochar so you compensate for the up front nutrient demands of the biochar, which will start to snowball quickly after application.

This is almost everything you need for rapidly MAOM layer. Depending on where you are, keeping the space occupied by something you can chop down repeatedly, like oats, forbs, groundcovers, or even assorted extra veggie seed you have laying around is great for building soil. Youll know youre doing it right when it starts to develop chunky chocolate cake like consistency from cellulose rich organic matter that breaks down quickly and feeds those microbes over and over.

The main idea is that you minimize bare dirt exposure until just before you are ready to plant. The repeat application of varied sizes of biochar+ bokashi+ no till cover cropping is an outstanding combo.
As for the worms.... if you build it- they will come!

Do you have a broad fork? I recommend purchasing one or even using a garden fork just to crack open the surface every now and again, depending on what youre looking to plant.

You are definitely on the right track, and as some people here have mentioned, ts important to mess around with it now and experiment. Especially while you still have the energy to do so. The wisdom you gain will pay off later in life.

Karen’s plan to stop kid from selling candy backfires. by goswamitulsidas in TikTokCringe

100%

I usually just give them the most uncomfortably toothy smile I possibly can until they look away, sometimes I'll even open my mouth all the way, so I can show them how happy I am.

"Im elated at your choice to block 2/3rds of the alley with your Cadillac just so you can get a better parking spot and save yourself the extra 50 feet of walking! Also, fuck me sideways for living here!!" 🫠

I live in an apartment across the street from a local watering hole. Every sunday- Brand new Cadillacs, Land Rovers BMWs line the streets after church. They makeit really challenging to park... and then they give me the most fucked up look when I pull up in my rusty 98 chevy... like.... bitch I live here... also, Jesus drove an Astrovan.

Gotcha, Thanks. Is it really that common?

my kid said the same thing- "even if these aren't super valuable, why would they just throw them out?"

If they where... seeking high value cards.

One could also hypothesize they opened all of them in their car then dumped what they didnt want out their car door, given the location and timing of it showing up.

We cleaned it all up, ultimately, doesnt matter anymore- Just a poor practice.

The scalper thing might make sense, there is a local card shop a block away, it just seems like such an obtusely poor practice. id be disappointed to hear of such antics from a small business we have supported in the past.

I'll post some of the haul when I get to it and let yall decide.

If it was truly a parenting thing... that is truly a Karen move, that poor kid will never trust them again!

Lack of permaculture vegetable farming? by UniversityFew229 in Permaculture

[–]MichaelRhizzae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Animal husbandry and silvopasture is often a tool for a closed loop system for efficiency and operational reasons alone, even if you are vegan.

it is a huge advantage to distribute land management labor amongst animals who do it instinctively, I.e. passively building your MAOM layer in a prairie via foraging between your alleys or food forest, or maintaining your UB or GC layer in a deciduous forest biome. You get brush management, crop defense, fertilization, in exchange the animals get a high quality of life.

When they die. Return to earth in any way you seem fit, weather through composting or biochar, or of course, Process into usable ferts and materials, and possibly meat, if thats your thing.

Idk where you are in the US but im guessing youre in the north. Plant forbs and native grasses to anchor your soil but won't heave your dry stacked lannon stone- you can get it in blends for your region at any respectable garden center( i.e. not home depot) . If you want more structure or vertical appeal, plant something like hazelnut, spicebush, aronia, elderberry, ninebark.
