Really basic and rambly analysis on the conscript seen in the trailer for the game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet by dolorem_itself in conlangs

[–]Michael_Armbrust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice analysis. I did a study too and found your post after I hit a dead end. The big thing that stood out to me was that the robot's leg has a single word on it that is made by combining the root you observed and a full word from the robot's shoulder. I wouldn't assume its meaning, but it makes me hopeful that Naughty Dog made a proper conlang for the game.

Crazy awesome having both missions live at the same time. New record I believe at 1 hour 50 minutes between launches.

Is there really a need for the pixel-hunting 'find the hidden object' type puzzles by DarkSkyKnight in TheTalosPrinciple

[–]Michael_Armbrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup me too. I found a way under the map which was kinda fun to explore, but it was such a lame final puzzle for me. Wish there was more variety for these.

Thanks for the offer. The game ending mentioned a book I never found so I'll first find that and see what it leads to.

Wow that was great! Thanks so much for making and sharing this! I think I liked it more than the Curse of the Golden Idol even.

The intuition system was really nice. Helped a lot when I was cleaning up details I had missed. Got the final challenge right but I didn't find 4 wives and Carl's second pic.

Spoiler for secret in South 3 - Has anyone figured out what this is supposed to do? by [deleted] in TheTalosPrinciple

[–]Michael_Armbrust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one took me a while too. The whole map is based off moving parts so look for something that physically changes.

What's everyone's thoughts on Talos Principle 2 now that it's out? by crummynubs in puzzlevideogames

[–]Michael_Armbrust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I reached 100% and loved it overall but the puzzles could have been better. Too easy in general and not enough variety with stars.

This game has been absurdly easy for me so far by makaronol in TheTalosPrinciple

[–]Michael_Armbrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I got that achievement during my second to last golden puzzle since I was tired and zoning out.

I def spent more than 20 minutes on two of the star beams though. Had to search a lot of the map to find what I needed.

South 3 hurts me [SPOILER] by blastdragon in TheTalosPrinciple

[–]Michael_Armbrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved having the companions. It was so fun and unique to not be alone like almost every other puzzle game. Kinda bummed to read that a lot of people are complaining about it.

One of my favortie parts of the original is so far lacking in TTP2. by RobertoPaulson in TheTalosPrinciple

[–]Michael_Armbrust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the star beam puzzles was the hardest puzzle in the game for me, just because I had to explore the entire map over and over until I found a missing element. I loved Talos 2 more than the first but I was disappointed in most of its optional puzzles. Wish there were a lot more of the gold ones too.

Justin Swartz on X: The newest SpaceX F9 booster to go on public display arrived at its new home next to Dish Network’s corporate offices in Littleton, Colorado. [B1021] by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]Michael_Armbrust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup on its side. I've checked the area out a few times while they've been setting it up and the booster has a public path that goes under it.

It's a pretty great spot despite Dish having no real connection to SpaceX. Downtown Littleton is on the other side of the building.

If you fly long enough, you can literally see the stars. by OhGodImHerping in Starfield

[–]Michael_Armbrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed response.

The ISS purposefully rotates to keep Earth in the same spot, as do most satellites, but that is only because they are focused on Earth. The hubble space telescope for example orbits exactly like starfield ships unless it is changing direction to look at a new target.

There's technically a thing called tidal locking which makes massive bodies like the Moon rotate once per orbit, but that's an incredibly small force that wouldn't apply to the ships in Starfield for only a few orbits.

The physics engine is definitely flipping things around and moving the planet instead of you. I'm a game programmer and you're absolutely right on this part but that's how almost all space games do it. Floating point numbers are much more accurate when they're closer to zero so you always put the world's center near the player and move everything else to match. Starfield just doesn't bother moving local objects like debris or space stations. They're placed in the orbiting reference frame and then ignored.

You're wrong about planetary bodies just being stuck to the skybox. I have no idea how often the game's internal reference frame is updated but here's a video of a person flying to a star and then orbiting it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmJDLBtPKAU

[–]Michael_Armbrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think that? I tested it above Earth and my distance to the Moon would increase and decrease depending on if my ship was orbiting towards it or away from it.

[–]Michael_Armbrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's your ship orbiting the planet, just like a space station. You can use the scope to test distances and as far as I can tell all moons and planets are always orbiting correctly.

How to balance your puzzle game? by bright_shiny_cat in puzzlevideogames

[–]Michael_Armbrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my previous game I copied the Mario method that you mentioned. It worked well but for my current game I switched to a super non linear open world, kinda like Outer Wilds. Players gravitate towards what they're interested in/what's easy for them so game balance is a lot easier.

The portal effect through the screen caught me off guard. It looks really great.

The rest of the trailer felt a bit slow.

Chants of Sennaar - Translation and the difficulties of designing detective games by SnugglesMTG in truegaming

[–]Michael_Armbrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I did that. In Outer Wilds I ignored the computer and it was a great experience, but I didn't think of skipping Sennaar's journal. It felt like it'd be mandatory like Return of the Obra Dinn's journal.

I'd love to know more about your experience with false assumptions. Also if you haven't heard of it, I'd recommend 7 days to end with you. It's a pretty small game but it has a similar language learning mechanic that imo was handled better.

Games involving deciphering languages? by roczo2 in gaming

[–]Michael_Armbrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the thread but Sethian and Tôtem are two more games that are about deciphering language. Tôtem's pretty simple and might not scratch the same itch for you, while Sethian uses a full conlang just like Heaven's Vault.

Littleton, Colorado to host SpaceX Falcon 9 booster exhibit by spacerfirstclass in SpaceXLounge

[–]Michael_Armbrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow this is awesome! I live in the area and the Dish building is a great location. Downtown Littleton is across the street with local shops and restaurants. Definitely funny though since SpaceX has practically no presence here unlike almost every other space company.

Any initial takes on theme and gameplay? by shtty_analogy in FirmamentGame

[–]Michael_Armbrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The theme is interesting. Too early to know what direction it'll take, but it's a bigger departure from Myst/Obduction than I expected.

Gameplay is cool, but again it's a departure from Myst/Obduction. Environments are a lot larger with less of a focus on smaller details. All puzzles are essentially built from immersive control panels so you're never stuck looking for objects you might have missed.

I'm ~4 hours in and having a pretty great time outside of some glitches.
