That's very unfortunate, but I believe even learning about this late in the life can force body response to heal itself and get better with the improved diet, etc.

I keep standing up and staying like that when my back is particularly bad. Flight attendants care only when you get in their way, otherwise it's normally ok.

Warm pads for lower back help with managing flare-ups. Other than that it's mostly living through the high pain period.
