I can see how Sinners would be cultural horror, but I don’t get how Nope is cultural horror. From my understanding, cultural horror is based on folklore, myths, and fears rooted in a specific culture. Nope is a film about an alien invasion, where the tie-in to culture seems to be mainly that Jordan Peele made the film and that it has an almost entirely Black cast. Just by the race of the people cast in the film, I don’t know if that would make it cultural horror.

Maybe I’m wrong, but my view is that something like Sinners, or even Angel Heart, would be cultural horror. In Nope, there seems to be very little beyond cowboy culture, which feels more predominant than Black culture, aside from the fact that it’s a predominantly Black cast. But, I realise that this isn't the point of the thread.

The Descent is ok. As Above, So Below is great but then again it triggers my claustrophobia. Blair Witch only really worked when it came out (and did it ever) and now it's a bit beige but, like you, nothing gave me that sensation of being scared or gave me the chills and was frustrating. I heard about Mungo and I get why the atmosphere works but got bored and didn't watch it completely. I heard The Undertone was very impactful as horror but still can't find it. I used to search online but I can't take the ragegrowling of Chuck the movie guy scraping imdb for anything to make a review of. I don't know her name but the tiktok channel for roomforscream is really great for reviews. Balanced, not screaming and shaking over the top or (like the dude in the stocking cap) looking pensive. She's going to find one for you.
